1 Spring 2016 Therapeutic Massage Evening/Part-Time Track Forsyth Tech s Therapeutic Massage certificate series is the first phase in reaching professional licensure and working towards the later diploma or associates degree. Successful completion of the four-part, eighteen-month curriculum will allow students to acquire the skills and clinical hours necessary for North Carolina licensure eligibility. The four semesters must be completed in sequence (Part I, then II, etc.) with a holiday break separating each certificate. Therapeutic Massage (MTH) is an open enrollment clinical curriculum with 16 cohort seats available each fall. Accepted students must complete all clinical requirements before enrolling in MTH courses. The instructional facility is conveniently located at the Grady P. Swisher Center, 1108 Swisher Center Road in Kernersville, NC. Certificate One (Practitioner I-A) (C45750MA-A) 1/2016-5/2016 M-TH, 6PM-10PM (Practitioner I-B) (C45750MA-B) 5/2016-7/2016 M-TH, 6PM-10PM Certificate Two (Practitioner II-A) (C45750MB-A) 8/ /2016 M-TH, 6PM-10PM (Practitioner II-B) (C45750MB-B) 1/2017-5/2017 M-TH, 6PM-10PM 2016 Clinical Requirements Deadline: December 16, 2015 Diploma or Associates Degree Option Graduates from the certificate series are eligible to earn a future diploma or associates degree in Therapeutic Massage. The additional course requirements will be completed after the certificates have concluded. Anatomy & Physiology BIO 163 (or BIO 165/166 or BIO 168/169) is not required for the certificate program. However, these courses are mandatory for students who wish to earn a diploma or associate s degree from Forsyth Tech s Therapeutic Massage program after completing the certificate series. 1
2 THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE OPEN ENROLLMENT APPLICATION PROCESS 1. Complete a Forsyth Tech Application indicating Spring 2016 Therapeutic Massage. Please keep in mind that you must ultimately choose to enroll in the full-time day or the evening part-time certificate series. The day and evening certificates have independent instructional and clinical schedules Have an official high school transcript or GED scores mailed to the Admissions Office. (Official transcripts can be sent directly from the school to Forsyth Tech and have the school s seal or original signature.) 3. Official college transcripts are only required to be sent to the Admissions Office if applicants are seeking possible transfer credit. The Records Office will review the transcripts for transferrable credit. THERAPEUTIC MASSAGE CLINICAL REQUIREMENTS 1. Clinical Requirements Complete the Clinical Form, scan/print clinical documents, and or take documents to a personal appointment with Kim Moore and Sandy Mason. Be sure to include the following forms: a. 12/16/15: Therapeutic Massage Clinical Form Complete and sign form b. 12/16/15: Healthcare CPR Copy of CPR certification card (approximate cost $50) c. 12/16/15: Professional Massage Session Completion of the form documenting a session received from a licensed massage therapist (approximate cost $50-$70, form will be provided by Ms. Moore or Ms. Mason via or personal appointment). d. 12/16/15: Student Medical Health Form Required to have a medical doctor complete the form (approximate cost of up to $100) and must include your immunization records. e. 12/16/15: Criminal Background Check and Drug Screen Vendor approved by Forsyth Tech (approximate cost of $100; this charge may be variable due to name changes or living in different states & is subject to change. Information will be provided by Ms. Moore or Ms. Mason via or personal appointment). Students are encouraged to complete the clinical requirements as soon as possible since only 16 Day and 16 Evening cohort seats are available. Program seating priority for MTH courses is based on the date clinical requirements are completed. 2

Completion of College level English or Computer Placement Testing All clinical students must be eligible for ENG-111 and earn a final grade of C or higher in a college level English composition course. Placement testing can be waived once official college transcripts or AP scores are received and reviewed by the Records Office. All students must demonstrate English and Reading Competencies to be eligible for clinical program enrollment. Please note completing ENG-111 is not a prerequisite to enter Therapeutic Massage, but students must finish the course to meet graduation requirements. To ensure your success and meet the minimum requirements for ENG-111 (for MTH Certificate I), you may need to complete the computer placement testing (CPT). If the placement test score(s) is below the minimum required for acceptance, a student must complete the appropriate developmental coursework before enrolling in MTH clinical courses. All developmental coursework must be completed and verified by the Therapeutic Massage faculty before a student can enroll in MTH courses. Placement Testing- All applicants must demonstrate English and Reading competencies to be eligible for program consideration. There are 3 different ways that these competencies can be met: a. Placement Test Scores (all scores are valid for 5 years): CPT* COMPASS* ASSET* Sentence Skills 86 Writing 70 Writing Skills 41 Reading Comp. 80 Reading 81 Reading Skills 41 The NC-DAP Reading and English (DRE) have replaced the above tests at all NC Community Colleges. The following are the required scores for those taking NC-DAP: NC-DAP DRE* DRE Composite Score 151 (or higher) Applicants taking the NC-DAP English and Reading test must demonstrate mastery in DRE 096, 097 and 098. *Applicants not meeting these minimum scores should enroll in the appropriate DRE course(s). All DRE courses must be completed before a student can enroll in Therapeutic Massage curriculum courses (MTH 110, MTH 125, etc). b. SAT/ACT scores (valid for five years): Specific scores will waive specific tests SAT Critical Reading OR SAT Writing or ACT Reading- 22+ OR ACT English- 18+ will exempt applicants in Reading and Sentence skills. 3. No D/F/WF Clinical Policy Students who meet placement test score requirements can enroll without having any related coursework completed, assuming all other standards have been satisfied. All therapeutic massage and related general education coursework must have a C or better to be eligible for clinical enrollment. Students who earned a D or F in the related course attempt(s) must repeat the course according to the Progression Path for Therapeutic Massage completion before allowed to enroll in the next clinical course. Failure to remove the grade of D or F will result in unsuccessful completion of the Therapeutic Massage program. 3

8 Forsyth Technical Community College Technical Standards Therapeutic Massage Program (A45750/D45750/C45750MA-MB) The following listing has been prepared to assist you in understanding the technical standards of the Therapeutic Massage program in order to affiliate in the clinical setting and enjoy longevity in the profession. The technical standards as stated here reflect performance abilities that are necessary for a student to successfully complete the requirements of the Therapeutic Massage curriculum. It should be noted that under the Americans with Disabilities Act A qualified person with a disability is one who can perform the essential function of a job with or without reasonable accommodation. Standard Interpersonal abilities sufficient to interact with individuals of various socioeconomic, lifestyle, emotional, cultural, ethnic and intellectual backgrounds. Communication abilities sufficient for interaction with others in verbal and written form. Critical thinking ability sufficient for clinical judgment. Physical abilities sufficient to move around massage tables and treatment areas and use laboratory equipment. Physical health sufficient to perform and receive therapeutic massage. NOTE: A Forsyth Tech Physical Form must be completed and submitted prior to beginning the program. Demonstrate patience and empathy with clients. Demonstrate giving and receiving therapeutic touch with a variety of individuals. Read charts and instructions accurately. Document and interpret clinical findings and treatment protocols. Perform palpation techniques, perform range of motion with clients, perform soft tissue treatment modalities, perform various manual flexibility techniques. Detect and evaluate change in the palpated findings. Adhere to personal and professional ethics. Adhere to healthcare privacy rules. Adhere to professional standards of boundaries. Modify behavior/performance in the classroom or clinic after feedback from the instructor or clinical supervisor. Show problem-solving ability sufficient to organize and complete multiple tasks accurately and within assigned time frames. Independently initiate routine job tasks. Respond independently and quickly to emergency situations. Deal with abstract and concrete variables, define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Please read the Technical Standards to assess your own abilities to complete this program and demonstrate competence in the profession. Students need to be prepared for the giving and receiving of massages during clinical coursework. If a Therapeutic Massage student believes that he or she cannot meet one or more of the standards without accommodation or modifications, the college must determine, on an individual basis, whether or not the necessary accommodations or modifications can be made reasonably.
