1 Breadth and Depth of Degree among IUPUI, its Peers, and other Urban 13 Universities The following tables examine the number of degree programs, and highest degree levels offered by IUPUI in comparison with its six official peer institutions and the 15 other institutions in the Urban 13 Consortium (i.e., each table compares 22 institutions). As simple as it may seem, there is no standard way to enumerate degree programs. A single university may have several different counts, depending on whether one is looking at official degree offerings sanctioned by a coordinating board or the various tracks and specialties as defined by the individual programs and units. For example, a University s coordinating board may sanction a B.S. degree in Business and the university may offer that degree through programs in management, marketing, finance, etc. One way to circumvent this problem is to count programs according to how they are reported to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) for the required degree completions survey that is part of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). Institutions report their degrees conferred according to a Classification of Instructional (CIP) code system. The CIP Code system is a hierarchical reporting classification system that includes three levels of hierarchy. The first two digits reflect the highest level, the third and fourth digits the next level, and the last two digits the lowest level. For example, the code, is intended for classification of programs related to Banking and Financial Services, which is part of the second tier of programs related to Finance and Management Services (52.08), which is part of the general disciplinary area, Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services (52). Although all institutions use the same classification system, their practices vary regarding the how they classify their degrees. For example, one institution may classify degrees offered through a specific program as , whereas another institution may report the same program through (Finance General), and another through (Business/Commerce General). With these limitations in mind the following tables first examine the breadth and depth of degree coverage across institutions by first examining the number of high level aggregate areas in which each institution offers degrees and the average highest degree level within those areas. The high level areas were selected using the first two-digits of the CIP code for most disciplinary areas, with further selection of four-digit areas within those aggregate areas that include many traditional arts and science disciplinary distinctions (e.g., Social Sciences disaggregated to separate economics, political science, anthropology, etc.). The appendix to this report includes the complete list of the 56 disciplinary areas examined in this first analysis. Table 1 shows in the left-most columns, the percent of the 56 disciplinary areas for which the institutions awarded a degree at any level and the rank of the institution among the 22 included. The middle columns show the percent of the 56 disciplinary areas in which each institution awarded a graduate or professional degree (master s, first professional, or doctoral) and the corresponding rank. The final columns indicate the average highest degree level (and its rank) among those areas in which each institution offers a degree, where the degrees are averaged using 1 for associates, 2 for bachelor s, 3 for masters, 4 for first professional and 5 for doctoral. IUPUI ranks 15 th in overall breadth, 16 th in graduate/professional degree breadth, and 18 th in average degree level. All of these ranks are the lowest among IUPUI s official peer institutions.

Table 2 includes all graduate/professional degrees, followed by Tables 3 through 5 examining doctoral, first professional, and master s degree respectively. Table 6 examines total undergraduate programs and degrees conferred followed by Table 7 for baccalaureate degree programs and Table 8 for associate degree programs. IUPUI ranks in 5 th among the seven institutions in its peer group in the number of different graduate professional degree programs. It ranks 4 th among this group in total graduate and professional degrees conferred. On both these measures, IUPUI ranks in the middle of the Urban 13 pack. Tables 3 through 5 show that IUPUI is relatively robust in first professional programs and especially degrees conferred, moderate in master s degree program and degrees, and relatively low in doctoral programs and especially doctoral degrees conferred. IUPUI generally ranks higher among its peers and among the Urban 13 in undergraduate degree programs and degrees conferred. However, Tables 7 and 8 reveal that the overall undergraduate listing is raised by IUPUI s prominence as an associate degree conferring institution, where it ranks 4 th in number of programs and 1 st in degrees conferred.
