1 Educational Specialist Degree in Teacher Leader Candidate Informational Packet The Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education at Samford University offers a unique opportunity for graduate study in Teacher Leader. The innovative Educational Specialist degree in Teacher Leader is available for candidates who hold both a bachelor of science and master of science/arts degree and hold Class B and Class A certification in education. The Teacher Leader program provides the candidate with the required credentials to be considered for teacher leader positions in K-12 schools/systems in Alabama. The purpose of this degree program is to equip teachers with a research-based, customized, and rigorous preparation program that will prepare future teacher leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to impact student achievement and to lead successful school improvement initiatives. The program encompasses essential competencies for teachers of all children, all competencies of which can be accommodated for all learning levels, and thereby increasing overall student achievement. The Teacher Leader program provides opportunities for candidates to demonstrate knowledge and abilities outlined in the Alabama Standards for Teacher Leaders while being involved in cutting-edge, site-based learning activities including, but not limited to: Apply research-based knowledge to address real-life problems and improve practices in classrooms, schools, and districts; Use data to inform decisions about students, teachers, schools, and/or districts; Create professional learning communities in which leadership teams successfully address classroom, school, and/or district needs; Engage parents and community members in supporting gifted education goals and higher student achievement. Admission is competitive and applicants meeting the application deadline will be given preference. 2 Educational Specialist Degree with Class AA Certification in Teacher Leader The teacher leader program at Samford University includes the following features: A blend of theoretical concepts with practical hands-on experience A focus on equity and excellence to improve student achievement A focus on technology as a tool for improving administrative efficiency and instructional effectiveness A strong internship component, operating under the direction of field-based mentors and university faculty Utilization of practitioners from local school systems in modeling and coaching of jobrelated skills Classroom instruction that features problem-based learning and case study methods Admission Requirements The recruitment and selection process for the teacher leader program at Samford University is designed to find, screen, orient, and place candidates for optimal success in graduate study and ultimately in positions of leadership in education. The program seeks candidates with excellent teaching records, high commitment to student achievement, talent for leadership, past academic success, and creative energy for solving educational problems. 1. To be eligible for admission, the prospective candidate must have earned a master s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and Class A certification in any teaching field or area of instructional support. The teacher leader program is an initial certification at the Class AA level. (NOTE: If an individual is admitted to the Class AA Teacher Leader program based on a master s level professional educator certificate in a teaching field or area of instructional support from another state, complete the Class AA teacher leader program, and subsequently applies for Class AA teacher leader certification, then the individual must earn at least a Class A Professional Educator Certificate in a teaching field or area of instructional support before applying for Class AA certification). 2. The prospective candidate shall have earned a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4-point scale on all previous graduate work. 3. The prospective candidate should have a minimum of three full years of full time teaching experience in a P-12 setting. 4. The prospective candidate will submit a portfolio containing the following: (a) evidence of ability to positively affect student achievement; (b) evidence of collaborative leadership potential. 2
3 General Information 1. Tuition Tuition charges are payable on or before validation day. Please refer to the class schedule or your billing statement to determine deadlines for payment. For payment, contact the Bursar s Office at Testing Information no score over 6 years old will be accepted Program Completion Requirements 1. Completion of Course Work Candidates in all graduate programs must ensure that they take the correct courses, according to the checklist, and earn the correct number of semester hours for completing the degree. All candidates have six (6) years in which to complete their graduate programs. 2. Grade Point Average A GPA of 3.0 must be maintained throughout and upon completion of the graduate program. 3. State Certification Application All certification paperwork should be turned in to the Certification Officer no later than the last day of the candidate s last class before graduation. All degrees leading to initial certification will require a passing score on the PRAXIS to be eligible to apply for state certification. 4. Comprehensive Exit Examination Chair of Graduate Studies, will inform candidates of the Comprehensive Examination process at the Comprehensive Examination orientation meeting. Candidates will complete the Comprehensive Examination process at a date determined by the Chair of Graduate Studies. 4 Application Procedures The application process for the EdS in Teacher Leader program is as follows: 1. Complete a graduate school application (included in this packet) and a $35 application fee. Make check or money orders payable to Samford University. Samford University alumni are not required to submit the application fee. 2. Submit two official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended; Escripts will be accepted 3. Submit three (3) letters of recommendation one must be from your principal or supervisor 4. Provide official score report of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) with a minimum score of verbal and quantitative combined or 396 on the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). NO SCORE OLDER THAN 6 YEARS WILL BE ACCEPTED. 5. Submit a copy of your most recent Alabama teaching certificate 6. Completed Disposition Form (included in this packet) also completed by applicant s supervisor. 7. Submit one page statement of purpose for pursuing the degree 8. Writing Sample: A five-page writing sample describing a problem that faces teacher leaders today (nationally), analyzing salient points of the issue, and evaluating potential solutions. The sample should demonstrate formal writing and should include appropriate citations. Follow APA format. 11 Student Health Services Dear Prospective Candidate: Please carefully review the Immunization form. The University requires all candidates to submit this Immunization Record in order to reduce the risk of communicable disease on campus. The completed form is due no later than two weeks after the first day of class of the term the candidate will be starting their program. The record must be signed by a healthcare provider or include a health department stamp. Failure to submit this documentation within two weeks after the first day of class of the term the candidate begins their program will result in a $150 fine and a registration hold on your account. If you need to receive any immunizations to complete your form, you may do so at Student Health Services on campus. Please note that we do not process insurance claims and that you will incur some expense for any vaccinations, skin test, or laboratory testing done on campus. Our office is available Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 12:00pm and from 1:00pm to 4:30pm.
