2 Traveling Film School s Feature Debut Offers an Unsettling Portrait of Childhood Abandonment and Prostitution in Africa LOS ANGELES - The Traveling Film School Project has completed the first cut of its feature-length drama The Tree of Ghibet, a film seeking release in Produced and directed by husband-and-wife team Amedeo D Adamo and Nevina Satta, The Tree of Ghibet delivers a disturbing account of childhood abandonment and prostitution taken straight from the urban jungles of Africa. A story of spiritual possession and abandonment The first in a trilogy of films tackling the global epidemic of childhood abandonment, The Tree of Ghibet focuses on the story of an eight-year-old boy (D.J.) who is accused of being possessed by devils and abruptly deserted by his family on the brutal streets of Doula, Cameroon. In order to survive, D.J. is forced to join a gang of child prostitutes and street kids. But his arrival in this world changes the destinies of three displaced women: Ghibet, the Witch-pimp who harbors him, Divine, a teenage prostitute searching for a way out, and Mary, a disaffected middle-class social worker. With a killer on the loose and preying on homeless children, the four characters must find a way to help each other and stay alive. The Tree of Ghibet is a visceral fable, D Adamo says. This boy needs to find a mom, or at the very least, a safe place to sleep tonight, in a world full of vigilante killers, pimps, sexual predators. He also has to learn what it means to be Possessed and what he s supposed to do about it if he gets rid of this possession he s told he has, will someone take him back home? Unfortunately, Satta points out, this situation is not simply imagined by a screenwriter. In certain African countries it is still legal to desert your child if you simply just say that they are possessed - an allegation that can be a life sentence for thousands of small children, as it is for the young boys and girls in our tale. What we wanted to do was make a movie that allowed those kids to share their stories with the world from their perspectives. With raw energy and stark realism, the film unfolds from the real-world point of view of its child protagonists. Yet it has a fascination with the imaginations of homeless children, with what creatures and spiritual presences they create to help them survive in the face of abandonment. This dual commitment which the filmmakers call Imaginative Realism - is in large part a product of the very unusual way the film was made.

3 Imaginative Realism movies made by and with homeless children The Tree of Ghibet was filmed entirely on location for a modest $11,000 and features the real-life street children of Douala. It is also the product of the couple s educational non-profit Traveling Film School. The Traveling Film School is a international non-profit institute based in Milan and Los Angeles that provides free film and theater training to marginalized children in underdeveloped regions - a cause The Tree of Ghibet s filmmakers feel very strongly about (so much so that the couple actually used their wedding gifts as start-up capital for the school.) Both filmmakers are long-time educators - Satta is a Professor of film at the University of Milan and D Adamo was the founding Dean and former President of the Los Angeles Film School and their new school shows this breadth of experience and training. The School s structure has three stages; after it arrives in a place like Douala (where it was hosted by the children s homeless shelter), students are taken thru a theater camp, then thru a film-camp where they are given a chance to make short films of their own. In the last step, all are then invited to participate as cast and crew members in the filming of a feature-length movie about their unique struggles and living conditions. The School will travel to Brazil and India next. We want to make films that capture the live and imaginations of children all over the developing world, to do it with real authenticity and without imposing any of our false or preconceived notions. says D Adamo. By giving the children vital roles in the filmmaking process, and by teaching them how to dramatize their own real situation, we are able to help them understand their world better as well as achieve a really unusual level of authenticity in the dramas we are all making together. For us the approach of Imaginative Realism results in films for the children, by the children, real windows onto the lives of children living on the streets. A veritable labor of love, both the school and the movie came about as an effort by the filmmakers to give disenfranchised children an opportunity to share their stories with the world through the medium of cinema. For Satta, the seed for this came in 1999, on her first trip to Cameroon. That year Satta began teaching a course in filmmaking to college students in Douala. As part of the class, Satta would screen classics by John Ford and Alfred Hitchcock - films that started attracting an audience other than her students. One afternoon, a group of homeless children from off the streets gathering around her window during a screening of The Birds. The kids would literally hang from trees just to get a peek at Hitchcock s famous flying monsters. Satta put a second monitor at the window. As the number of children outside her classroom window grew, Satta was struck by a new goal and sense of purpose. I realized that it was those children on the other side of the window whose stories were really calling us to action as both filmmakers and educators, she says. They were treated as if they were invisible on the streets. But because of their curiosity and attraction for the moving images on the screen, you could tell that they possessed a

4 THE TREE OF GHIBET deep desire to express their voice. We felt that filmmaking was the solution to get their stories heard and to finally make them visible to the world. While in Africa, Satta continues, we learned that these children didn t see themselves as the victims of unfortunate circumstances or tragic social conditions. Instead, we found that the world of these children is also full of joy, solidarity and hope. Their daily struggle makes each of them a hero. For us and for them, making the film was simply a means to discovering their incredible sense of dignity and personal integrity. The Traveling Film School journey continues... As the filmmakers begin making the rounds on the festival circuit with The Tree of Ghibet, the couple is also currently seeking funding and donations for two more film camps and two more films - which they hope to produce under The Traveling Film School Project in order to complete the trilogy. After a seven-year fight to bring to life the dream of a traveling film school, we are excited to finally present our first film to audiences, says Satta. This film is a testament to the possibility of producing real cinema on an extremely low budget in parts of the world where strong oral traditions exists but access to film production resources is very limited. The Traveling Film School is non-profit educational organization dedicated to teaching filmmaking and theater to marginalized children in underdeveloped regions around the world. Founded in 2005 by Co-Presidents Nevina Satta and Amedeo D Adamo, the international school is based in Los Angeles and Milan, Italy. THE TR EE OF GHIBE T

But for these colleagues and life partners, the film is only their second collaboration in a series of film and educational projects. In 2005, D Adamo and Satta co-founded The Traveling Film School, a non-profit organization that provides free film and theater training to children in underdeveloped regions around the world. The institute is intended to give marginalized children a chance to tell their stories through a cinematic medium.
