4 DAY CAMPS College of DuPage offers a variety of summer camps and classes in the Glen Ellyn and Naperville areas. Students in kindergarten through grade 12 have the opportunity to attend academic classes to review concepts or get ahead, as well as enrichment classes for general interest and fun. EXPLORER CAMP Kindergarten to Grade 6 College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd., Student Resource Center (SRC), Glen Ellyn Join our Explorer Camp for an unforgettable summer of fun! Themes change weekly and include some educational components taught by endorsed teachers, as well as art, physical activities and field trips. Camps run Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. DAY CAMPS 2016 Cost is $229 for five-day attendance or $65 for daily attendance. The week of July 5 is $185 for four-day attendance (no class July 4). 5 TEEN X-TREME Ages College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd., Student Resource Center (SRC), Glen Ellyn Teen X-Treme camps offer older students all-day experiences featuring some of the hottest topics in town! Class schedule is from 9 a.m. to 2:50 p.m., with an hour for lunch. Early (7 to 9 a.m.), lunch (noon to 1 p.m.) and late (2:50 to 6 p.m.) supervision is included. Each student will learn the mechanics of Maya, an industry-grade 3D software environment, and produce a moving character of their own. In addition, this studio offers 3D scanning and printing technologies. Art Studio Explore your imagination through a variety of art media. Designed to inspire creativity, this course allows students to explore a variety of ideas and media through the arts. No previous art training is needed. Black Rocket App Attack! Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized game development tool, students explore the world of phone-based and tablet applications. Student-created apps are accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Parents may choose to publish apps if certain criteria are met, and final decisions are the sole discretion of Apple or Google. No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Crime Scene Investigation Put your detective skills to work while learning how forensic scientists use DNA, fiber samples and other evidence to identify crime suspects. Some of the class sessions will be held in the Homeland Security Education Center, where students learn first-hand how crime scenes are investigated. Digital Art and Animation Learn how to design a 3D programming environment using Alice software. Develop a virtual world and animate its people, animals and vehicles. Use the animations to tell a story or create an interactive game. Robotic Technology Program computers and use mathematics to model the movements of robotic devices. Students mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork skills. In small teams, using LEGO blocks, motors and sensors, students build robots that can walk, draw, move objects or find their own way and avoid obstacles. Students use a control console or computer to teach their robots to move, react and make sounds in order to solve challenges. Strategies for School Success Learn the skills that lead to success in school, such as test-taking, goal setting, time management, note-taking and organizational skills. Participants gain a better understanding of their learning style and how it applies to their academic success. Web Design Use your design, layout and creativity skills like a web design professional. Students will gain an in-depth, realworld experience in developing a comprehensive business website using design software. Writing Workshop Learn the elements of effective writing through journaling, writing exercises and literary analysis. This class will concentrate on grammar, punctuation, paragraphs, the development of ideas and sentence structure. Students will gain experience in writing essays, poetry and speeches. Day Camps COUNSELOR TRAINING PROGRAM Ages College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd., Student Resource Center (SRC), Glen Ellyn If you have outgrown day camp, but are too young to get a job, the Counselor Training (CT) program may be just for you! Counselors in training work closely with Summer Explorer day campers, and will have the opportunity to organize and lead age-appropriate activities while under the supervision of a camp aide. The program runs Monday to Thursday (two-week intervals) between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Participants may bring a sack lunch or purchase a lunch in the cafeteria. All classes meet Monday to Friday, except for the week of July 4, which meets Tuesday to Friday. Parents are responsible for escorting students to and from all classes, unless the student is enrolled in both a morning and afternoon class and registered for supervision ($30 per week). 11 Enrichment Class Descriptions Adventures in Reading Using fairy tales, fables and current popular literature, students will be enchanted with their reading while improving phonics, word analysis skills, vocabulary and reading comprehension. Algebra Basics Prepare for or review algebra basics in this comprehensive course that improves your comprehension of algebraic symbols and terms, equations, signed numbers, polynomials, inequalities and factoring. Amusement Park Physics Experiment with forces and Newton s three laws of motion by building and testing model rollercoasters and an array of other amusement park rides. Hands-on activities introduce friction, velocity, forces and types of energy. Archery Learn how to hold and successfully shoot a bow and arrow. Safety and attention to spatial relationships are stressed. All equipment is provided, but you may bring your own bow if you prefer. Please dress appropriately for weather conditions. Art Start Develop an artistic eye for color, shape, texture and form. Work with materials including chalk, paint, fabric and clay as you explore different media and techniques to express your creativity. Authors Workshop Engaging activities include a review of popular young adult books and poems that will inspire young writers to express their own creative ideas in stories and poems. Students will practice grammar, sentence structure and paragraph skills. Candy Chef Become a candy making expert as you learn simple recipes and techniques to make the tastiest of treats. Students will make scrumptious chocolates, caramels, and other chewy, gooey delights. Ceramics Students are introduced to materials, techniques and concepts in ceramics while working in a college ceramics lab. Students learn hand building, wheel throwing, glazing and firing. CheMYSTERY Experiment with hands-on chemical reactions to explore the fascinating world of elements. Competitive Math Stretch your math abilities by using logic, analytical reasoning and mental math. Learn to quickly solve a variety of algebraic and geometric math problems through math competition. Creating Cool Websites Use your design, layout and creativity skills like a web design professional. You will gain an in-depth, real world experience in developing a comprehensive business website using design software. Creative Engineering How is a tower built? What makes a bridge strong? Turn on your creativity and think like an engineer. Engage in a variety of hands-on activities that challenge you to solve practical problems using experimentation, analysis and personal designs. Creative Writing Discover the joy of writing, the intrigue of language and the confidence of authorship. Students will learn to write stories and personal narratives among other creative forms. After researching newspapers and other sources, improve your critical thinking and public speaking skills by debating controversial and newsworthy topics in a lively team format with expert guidance.
