EFFICIENT PORT AT THE HEART OF THE MARITIME CLUSTER INFORMATION The Port of Turku is a modern European port that provides excellent services for goods and passenger transports in the Baltic Sea region. Together with shipping companies and other logistics partners, the Port has achieved a strong position as an export route for the Finnish industry, as a result of which its export volumes are growing for the second year in a row. to Norway has increased project loads which can be ideally handled in the Port of Turku. The vessel schedules have been adjusted to suit the industry, and the Port s modern equipment and skilled professionals ensure safe and efficient handling of processed goods. Every port needs around it industrial operations which generate various logistics needs. The location of the Port of Turku at the heart of the Finnish maritime cluster is a major advantage both for maritime industry companies and logistics players. For example, Meyer Turku Shipyard s international component deliveries arrive through the Port of Turku and are stored in the Port area together with the components supplied by Finnish subcontractors. In addition to the steady transport volumes to Sweden, the exports were boosted by the doubled vessel capacity on the route to Norway. 16 The Port of Turku s truck parking area offers drivers of heavy vehicles a safe parking area and a place for rest and recreation between hours of driving. Located at the crossing of Pansiontie and Suikkilantie roads, the truck parking area is open all year round.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE PORT S ROAD CONNECTIONS CONTINUES INFORMATION The key transport connections of the Port of Turku will be improved further. The recently completed widening of Suikkilantie road provides heavy vehicles with an easier access from the Port via Turku Ring Road to the key highways in Finland. Phase one of the renovation of Highway 8 started in early The project focuses on the stretch between Turku and Pori and aims at improving road safety, smooth flow of traffic and intersections. The construction work will be implemented in three stages: the road between Raisio and Nousiainen will be converted into 4-lane motorway, lighting will be installed between Nousiainen and Rauma, and traffic safety will be improved between Luvia and Pori. The motorway section from Raisio to Nousiainen is expected to be completed in late All work on phase one will be completed in Upgrading the E18 road, which serves as the main route between Scandinavia and Russia, to a motorway is nearly completed. The Port of Turku is an important part of this connection between the east and west which is one of the key routes in the TEN-T network. The completion of the road will further strengthen the Port of Turku s position in the traffic between Finland and Scandinavia and transports to Russia. 11 HANDBOOK 2015

Environmentally sound LNG is suited as fuel for passenger, cargo and special vessels. Finland s first LNG-driven vessels are Viking Line s M/S Viking Grace and the Finnish Border Guard s new patrol vessel Turva.

LNG IS GOOD FOR THE BALTIC SEA INFORMATION Stricter air protection regulations in the Baltic Sea region entered into force at the beginning of Consequently, technology for reducing the emissions will be required in both old and new vessels. The main alternatives are either to install scrubbers to vessels or change for environmentally sound fuels, such as liquefied natural gas LNG. LNG is a clean fuel which can be used to replace fossil fuels in maritime transports and industry and thus reduce the emissions caused by them. LNG is in practice completely sulphur-free, it causes no particle emissions and its nitric oxide emissions are 90% lower compared with heavy fuel oil used in current engines. The carbon dioxide emissions which accelerate the greenhouse effect are also more than a quarter smaller. The Port of Turku has taken the sulphur content of the fuel and the nitrogen emissions of the vessels into account in its port charges since With the environmental port charges the Port aims to direct the shipping companies to use fuel with lower sulphur content and introduce technology to reduce nitric oxide emissions. As of the beginning of 2015, the emphasis on granting a discount lies on low nitric oxide emissions. 13 HANDBOOK 2015

In addition to Viking Grace, the route between Turku and Stockholm is operated by three other passenger ferries. There are four daily departures to Sweden, which also makes the route ideal for truck transports between Finland and Scandinavia.

VIKING GRACE CRUISES IN ENVIRONMENTALLY SOUND FASHION INFORMATION Operating between Turku and Stockholm, M/S Viking Grace is the first Finnish passenger vessel that uses LNG as fuel. Completed in January 2013, the ship is a pioneer in environmentally sound seafaring in many other ways, too. In order to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions M/S Viking Grace has an innovative management and followup systems for energy use. Developed in Finland, the system takes into account the vessel s internal system, speed, port calls and external conditions and on the basis thereof optimises the most efficient method of operation in terms of fuel and energy. The vessel s hull design also contributes to environmentally sound operating. The hydrodynamic hull with extremely low resistance reduces the generation of waves and decreases fuel consumption. As a combined effect of these factors, M/S Viking Grace takes the delicate nature of the Archipelago and the Baltic Sea into account even better than before. In addition to protecting the archipelago, M/S Viking Grace makes the unique archipelago scenery part of the cruise experience. The topmost decks of the ship form a public space, and the large glass walls provide a magnificent view to the sea. Aboard M/S Viking Grace the passengers can really feel like part of the surrounding archipelago and sea. 15 HANDBOOK 2015

Our location in the Port of Turku allows for quick warehousing and sheltering of the products carried through the Port. As the whole transport, forwarding and service network is built around the Port, we are able to provide all services to our customers in one place. Stefan Lindström, Managing Director Turku Free Zone Company

SAFE STORAGE NEXT TO THE PORT INFORMATION The logistics companies operating in the Port of Turku offer modern and efficient storage and distribution services to businesses. One of them is Turku Free Zone Company which has been operating next to the Port for 50 years. At present, Turku Free Zone Company offers the most comprehensive warehousing services for all products in need of safe storage. The company has over 25 hectares of field areas, and part of the buildings are refrigerated or temperature-regulated premises suited for the storage of foods. Turku Free Zone Company also offers its customers tax-free and duty-free storage, which is ideal for importers of alcohol and products coming from outside the EU. In addition to sheltered warehouse capacity, there are large outdoor areas. Guarded areas are used for the storage of e.g. various vehicles and components of the local shipyard industry, such as cabin modules of cruise liners. As for vehicle imports, Turku Free Zone Company has up-to-date premises for the PDI functions of imported cars and import maintenance of tractors. In addition to storage, Turku Free Zone Company offers its customers full range of goods handling services which secure the safety of the cargo at all stages. 17 HANDBOOK 2015

It makes many things easier, when the Port can almost be reached by a forklift. As goods need to be retrieved from storage for installation at different phases of the shipbuilding, fast and flexible services of the Port and its partners are a significant advantage for us. Samuli Kahala, Logistics Manager Meyer Turku Oy

MARITIME INDUSTRY IS AN IMPORTANT NEIGHBOUR FOR THE PORT INFORMATION The Port of Turku is located at the heart of the maritime cluster of Southwest Finland. The roots of the shipyard industry lie on the mouth of the River Aura, where shipbuilding continued up to the mid-1970s, when the shipyard operations were transferred to Perno district, on Raisionlahti bay. In August 2014, the German shipbuilder Meyer Werft became the shipyard s new principal owner. Co-operation with the Port of Turku and different logistics operators is an important part of materials management for the Meyer Turku Shipyard. The storage need related to shipbuilding at the shipyard has increased, because the shipyard handles by itself the storage of an increasing share of the goods destined to vessels being built. There are some 6,500 pallet places in the shipyard area, but storing all the goods there is not sensible or even possible. The Meyer Turku Shipyard uses the services of different service providers in the port for its storage needs. Cabin modules ready for installation are stored e.g. in the Pansio Harbour and the Free Zone Company of Turku. Lifeboats are kept on the outdoor storage area in the West Harbour. Some of the shipyard s subcontractors process their products ready for installation in the logistics companies hall premises. 19 HANDBOOK 2015

The development projects of the TEN-T network related to the operations of the Port of Turku are the motorway of the Baltic Sea and the E18 growth corridor. In the Baltic Sea region, attention to the environmental aspects is also emphasised. Jose Anselmo, European Commission

INVESTMENTS IN TRANSPORT NETWORKS MAKE EUROPE STRONGER INFORMATION The implementation of the TEN-T network for uniting the European Union s key transport networks has started. The goal is to build an efficient and functional transport system that will facilitate the movement of goods and people, boost the economic growth in Europe, and reduce the environmental impacts of transports. The new TEN-T core network comprises of nine key transport corridors in Europe, two of which connect Finland to the rest of Europe. The decisions on the development of the European transport system mean positive news to the Port of Turku and its customers. The map drawn by the European Commission places the Port of Turku as a part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean corridor, which runs from Turku via Helsinki all the way to the border of Finland and Russia. As for the Port connections, the core network includes the E18 motorway and the Turku Helsinki railway. For the Port of Turku, the most important thing is the sea connection to Stockholm, and its development is also supported by the EU. A major expansion project co-financed by TEN-T is underway in the Värtahamnen port and is due for completion in The sea connection is being developed in close co-operation by Turku and Stockholm. The goal is to develop the ports of Turku and Stockholm into a modern pair of ports which will serve efficiently both passenger traffic and the logistic needs of business companies. 21 HANDBOOK 2015

NEW SCHEDULED CONNECTIONS FROM TURKU INFORMATION The Port of Turku s important Scandinavian connections are complemented by Baltic Line Finland which operates between Turku and Norway and doubled its vessel capacity on the route in spring Baltic Line operates to a number of ports in Southern Norway, all the way to Bergen. From Bergen, the cargo can be shipped on Norwegian coastal service further afield, the northernmost destination being Hammerfest. Operating on two vessels allowed for switching to weekly departures. Baltic Line serves the whole of Finnish industry in both exports and imports. Products carried on the route mainly comprise of steel and forest industry products, chemicals, and animal feeds, and containers and boats are transported as deck cargo. The company also has extensive experience in carrying oversized loads of the engineering workshop industry, on a door-to-door basis if required. M/V Link Star s ro-ro ramp also allows carrying of machines and equipment mounted on wheels or crawler. Other new ports of call in the weekly schedule are Świnoujście in Poland and Fredericia in Denmark. 32 Did you know that the Port of Turku has served seafarers, merchants and passengers for nearly 900 years? The earliest recorded references to the Port date back to the 12th century, but historians have suggested that vessels sailed to the mouth of the River Aura from the whole Baltic Sea region already in the Iron Age.
