DETAILS OF THE VET STANDARD 1. Vocational education level 5 th. 2. State code S Qualification awarded dental hygienist. 4. Basic education secondary. II. CONTENT OF THE VET STANDARD 5. Brief description of occupational activity: 5.1. The VET Standard for a Dental Hygienist (hereinafter referred to as the Standard ) has been developed taking into account changes on the labour market, findings of the qualification study carried out by the Standards Development Working Group and based on experience in other countries. The present Standard serves as a basis for the development of a training programme of vocational education level The Standard defines the minimum training requirements of a dental hygienist for working in the following main activity areas: organisation of the workplace; provision of oral care services for a patient; participation in health promotion activities A dental hygienist works in health care institutions of all levels authorised to provide personal health care or odontological care, or oral care services, and in other institutions, and aims to ensure oral health A dental hygienist provides dental and oral care services for patients, conducts professional oral hygiene works, operates a dental roentgen-diagnostic device, assesses dental X-ray pictures, follows hygiene requirements for the workplace and tools. He /she is engaged in development of various health improvement and promotion programmes; he/she is able to introduce new prevention methods for oral and dental illnesses; he/she provides consultations how to retain healthy teeth and care for dentures, and individually solve oral health problems A dental hygienist is expected to demonstrate the following personal qualities: communicativeness, thoroughness, integrity, attentiveness, diligence, humanity. 6. The goal of a dental hygienist is to provide health care services for patients and consult them. 7. Activity areas and competences of a dental hygienist are listed in Appendix 1 of the Standard. 8. The scope of dental hygienist s competencies, training objectives and competency assessment are provided in Appendix 2 of the Standard. 9. For a successful professional career, a dental hygienist requires to demonstrate the following general abilities: 9.1. responsibility; 9.2. self-discipline; 9.3. creativity; 9.4. individual decision-making; 9.5. team work;
4 tactfulness; 9.7. mathematical literacy; 9.8. computer literacy. 10. Final qualification assessment: The qualification of a dental hygienist shall be awarded to a student who has completed the whole training programme, acquired competences defined in the Standard and has been given a positive final qualification evaluation In accordance with the competency assessment criteria listed in the Standard, the following is tested and evaluated: during the training process - all competencies defined in the Standard; during the final qualification assessment - selected competencies Organisation and performance of the final qualification assessment and issuance of documents is regulated by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Lithuania.

Psycho-preventive methods. Prevention of oral and dental illnesses: oral irrigation, gum massages, flour varnishes, gels, solutions, sealing materials. If a periodontitis of average severity is diagnosed, it is necessary to consult a periodontologist. Removing plaque from above-gums and under-gums. Basic medical aid in case of an accident, fainting, shock, anaphylaxis shock.
