1 M. Perry Chapman l Planner EDUCATION Cornell University, College of Architecture, Bachelor of Architecture PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS American Institute of Certified Planners American Planning Association Society for College & University Planning ACADEMIC POSITIONS Guest lecturer at many institutions across the United States including: Harvard University Graduate School of Design, University of Rhode Island, Rhode Island School of Design, Cape Cod Community College, University of Michigan, Western Wyoming College, Brandeis University, Cornell University, Tufts University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. PUBLIC POLICY BOARDS Representative, Metropolitan Area Planning Council, Executive Committee Member , ; Chairman of Technical Advisory Committee on Land-Use and Environmental Quality, Alewife Park Citizens Advisory Task Force for MBTA Red Line Transit Extension Belmont, Massachusetts, Planning Board, member; Chairman , Cornell University Business/Technology Park Advisory Committee Perry Chapman once admitted that he became obsessed with becoming a planner when he was eight years old, even though he had no idea what to call the occupation of his desire at such an early age. He had read about cities and great works of American infrastructure in grade school textbooks and magazines, and knew only that he wanted to be among those who shape such marvels. He would draw plans for imagined cities on big rolls of paper provide by his sign painter father, and would ask his parents at birthday time for such items as the Plan for the City of Houston or picture books about New York and Chicago. His childhood obsession never abated. Braced by the multidisciplinary richness of the undergraduate program at Cornell University s College of Architecture, Art and Planning, he launched into a professional career whose breadth and depth continued to expand for nearly five decades. By 1962 Perry was in the professional planning practice. He spent three years as a staff planner/urban designer with the Rochester, New York City Planning Bureau and 45 years with the international planning and design firm of Sasaki Associates of Watertown, Massachusetts, eventually becoming a partner leading the firm s campus planning practice. His impact on the practice follows two strands that he deliberately pursued during his career a deep portfolio of projects for public, private and institutional clients across the U.S.; and a robust array of writing, research and speaking activities communicating the theory and practice of planning. His career accomplishments reflect those complementary tracks: His first two decades at Sasaki included the successful management of largescale development plans and environmental impact studies for projects of regionwide significance. Notable projects include the plan for Princeton Forrestal Center; environmental impact statements for the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics; the firm s competition entry for a new capital city for Alaska; and assistance to the town of Woolwich, NJ to accommodate a planned new community. Starting in the early 1980s, he mainly concentrated on planning and design of college and university campuses, with 85 institutional clients in 35 states and three foreign countries. He advised 21 of the public flagship and land-grant institutions for their respective states, as well as community colleges, independent liberal arts colleges, and regional public colleges. Town-gown collaboration for economic development was a theme of his work at campuses such as Marquette, South Florida, Northwestern, and Virginia. He was the planning advisor to the University of Missouri from 1998 to He wrote over 20 articles and essays on planning, regional development, and sustainability for professional journals and national periodicals including APA s Planning, Architecture, Architectural Record Review, Planning for Higher Education and the
2 Chronicle of Higher Education. His 1982 essay, The Mature Region: Building a Practical Model for the Sustainable Society, in Technological Forecasting and Social Change received a Mitchell Prize for original research-based essays on the transition to the sustainable society. He presented more than 25 papers at local, national, and international conferences and participated in numerous forums and colloquies. Notable speaking engagements included his talk the University Research Park Reshapes its Region at the 1986 World Congress on Land Policy in London, and his keynote address at the Clemson University Town-Gown Collegium in 2007 on community engagement by colleges and universities. He gave guest lectures on planning, environment, and regional development at ten higher education institutions. He was the lead instructor and program coordinator for ten years for the seminar series on Campus Planning offered by the Professional Development Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. He was the recipient of several awards for his professional practice and writing. His planning projects have received ten national awards. He was made a Practitioner Fellow by the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy in 1984 to continue the research on New England that had received the above noted Mitchell Prize. The New England Chapter of APA conferred its Distinguished Planning Award on him in In 2008, he received the prestigious Founders Award of the Society for College and University Planning for distinguished achievement in higher education planning. He was invited to write a sub-chapter on Regional Planning in New England, published in the Encyclopedia of New England by the Yale University Press in His book, American Places: In Search of the 21st Century Campus, published by ACE Praeger in 2006, examines trends in the early 21st century affecting the place characteristics of American campuses and their relationship with their host regions and localities. He was a member of the Belmont, Massachusetts Planning Board for 25 years, and the town s representative on the Boston Metropolitan Area Planning Council for a similar duration, including two intervals as a member of the Council s Executive Committee. He was a member of Cornell University s Architectural Advisory Committee.
