The nickname The Battling Bishops dates to 1925; before then Ohio Wesleyan University s teams were simply known as The Red and Black, or sometimes as The Methodists. Ohio Wesleyan is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, and long has produced many of its bishops. By April, 1925, according to that issue of the Alumni Magazine, the present name had finally been derived. Ohio sports writers have been at a loss, the magazine reported. There are countless colleges throughout the country claiming red and black as their colors, and 14 Methodist colleges in Ohio alone. Pi Delta Epsilon journalism fraternity therefore sponsored a contest, and the winning nickname, The Battling Bishops, was placed before the sports writers of the state as the teams official title. Senior Harold Thomas of Lima submitted the winning entry. The new nickname must have provided inspiration. The 1925 football team, under George Gauthier, The Little Giant, went Its only loss came to Ohio State by a 10-3 score, and it tied Syracuse, 3-3, en route to winning the Ohio Conference championship. 1

4 2014 BISHOP OUTLOOK 2 Ohio Wesleyan won its schoolrecord sixth consecutive North Coast Athletic Conference championship last season, but the 2013 campaign ended earlier than head coach Jay Martin and the Battling Bishops would have liked with an upset loss in the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament. Martin and the Bishops will look to 20 returning lettermen, including a trio of All-NCAC selection, to defend the conference title and make a deeper run into the NCAA playoffs. We don t have the depth we ve had in previous years, Martin said, but our front-line players are very, Tyler Wall was a first-team All- America selection in very good. We can be very good this year, but how good is entirely up to the team. They ll be as good as they want to be. The midfield should be the Bishops strength this season. Senior Colton Bloecher is back at the attacking midfield spot. Bloecher was a first-team All- America, all-region, All-Ohio, and All-NCAC selection and was named the NCAC s Offensive Player of the Year last season after leading the team with 13 goals and 4 assists. Junior Brian Schaefer, another first-team All-NCAC pick in 2013, ranked fourth in the league in scoring with 11 goals and 5 assists. Brian Schaefer Junior Matt Cohen and sophomore Nick Norman will take over the outside midfielder positions, and junior Lonnie Barnes is back at the defensive midfielder spot. Junior Gunnar Bloecher can play either outside spot, junior Ricardo Balmaceda can fill in in any of the midfield positions, freshman Pat Miller will contribute in the defensive midfield, and sophomore Neil Wilson will see time as well. Junior Stephen Coldren and sophomore Nick Tobias also look to make an impact, and freshmen Grant Fisher and David Robinett will be heard from. At forward, junior Evan Lee takes over after ranking third on the team in scoring with 6 goals and 5 assists while coming off the bench last season. Senior Taylor Rieger, who scored 6 goals last season, also returns, and sophomore Kyle Baum and freshman Jeremy Brown also look to provide scoring punch. On defense, seniors Mason Hoge and Ryan Kaplan are in the outside positions, and senior Drew Pang and junior Matt DiCesare are the center backs. Sophomore Phoenix Neitzelt and freshman Trey Olsen also will see time at outside back, as will Gunnar Bloecher, and freshman Scott Harmanis could play in the center. In goal, senior Colin Beemiller is back after leading the NCAC in goals-against average in 2013, but will have to hold off a challenge from sophomore Ben Farynowski. Ohio Wesleyan faces another rugged schedule. The Bishops open the season with a trip to Michigan to face always-tough Calvin and Hope, the latter ranked 21st in this year s preseason poll. The Fred Myers-adidas Invitational follows the next week, with another pair of non-conference foes in Mary Washington and Guilford. A string of regional tests follows, with 23rd-ranked Ohio Northern highlighting the opposition. In the NCAC, 2013 NCAC tournament runner-up Kenyon, NCAC tournament semifinalists DePauw and Oberlin, and traditional rival Denison will be at the forefront of another thrilling title chase OWU Men s Soccer
