8 W O R L D C U P C O N N E C T O N Former Saint Louis All-American Brian McBride became the first Billiken to have his number retired when the SLU department of athletics made an official presentation to him at halftime of the East Carolina game on Nov. 9, Throughout their glorious soccer history, the Billikens have enjoyed the talents of many great players. But none have surpassed what McBride has accomplished on the world s biggest soccer stage. McBride continued a streak for Saint Louis University when he played a major role in the U.S. National Te a m s stunning performance at the 2002 World Cup in Korea. A Billiken has represented the USA in the last three World Cups. Billiken assistant coach Mike Sorber was a starter on the U.S. side that played its way into the 1994 second round when the World Cup was played in the States. U.S. head coach Bora Milutinovic annointed Sorber as his team s Most Valuable Player. M c B r i d e s experience wasn t quite as enjoyable in 1998 when he scored the only U.S. goal in the World Cup in France. He had to overcome a variety of injuries and other physical afflictions to gain a berth on the 2002 Cup roster coached by Bruce Arena. Along the way, he became the first U.S. player to score in two different World Cups. McBride got the U.S. attack started with a goal and an assist in an eye-opening 3-2 firstround triumph over Portugal and netted the game winner in a 2-0 victory over archrival Mexico to advance to the quarterfinals. He reflected upon his experiences after the Wo r l d Cup. What has stayed with you from your experience at Saint Louis University? So much because it was such a growing experience in both soccer and everyday life. There were two things really. One was adaptation in soccer, because it was a different style from high school. The college game was quicker and more physical. Learning to work dayin, day-out with your teammates; learning the defensive end of the game that you are working for your team; and learning to make space and use it was all invaluable. Second was just personal growth. made friends and met lots of quality people. The people that met at SLU were more interested in me as a person than they were i n t e rested in me as a soccer player. Can college soccer still be an advantageous route to go for a young player whose dream is to be a professional? n developing your game, each person is diff e rent. The competitiveness to break into MLS with only 10 teams is incredible. Some special players can turn pro at an early age, but many more need the four years in college to determine if professional soccer should be a career goal. n college, you can grow to become a better player and that process is expedited when you turn pro. Turning pro is the right move for some, but for most it s not. Brian McBride with Bill McDermott at the ceremony to retire his number at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. How attractive is it to a young player to see a former U.S. National Team player like Billiken assistant Mike Sorber and a former pro player like Billiken head coach Dan Donigan on a coaching staff at the college level? Both Danny and Mike are able to articulate well to the players, because they have first hand knowledge of what it takes to be successful. That s a complete benefit that you can t get everywhere. Why was the 2002 U.S. National Team more successful than the 1998 side? We had an attitude of 23 players who were going to stick together. We had a game plan, and everyone bought into it. (U.S. head coach) Bruce Arena is so prepared for each game. We played better, because we were better prepared. f you give Bruce the most effort that you possibly can, he ll respect you. He has great integrity. He also brought in some young guys, helped develop them, and they produced. U.S. forward Brian McBride scored the first goal in a 2-0 victory over Mexico in the 2002 World Cup Korea/Japan Round of 16. He expects the Billiken program to maintain its position among the nation s elite. We expect to compete for the Conference USA championship each year, because that is how you earn your way into the NCAA Tournament, Donigan said. After that, our ultimate goal is a national championship to add to the record number of titles at SLU. Academically, we expect to graduate our players within four or five years. We will maximize a player s potential to get the most out of each player, because every team gives Saint Louis University its best shot. Donigan has vast experience as both a player and coach. He holds a USSF A coaching license as well as his NSCAA Advanced National Coaching Diploma, and he was one of the most heralded collegiate soccer players in the nation during his fouryear career at Connecticut.
