3 Introduction: The Goethe-Institut The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach represented in over 75 countries worldwide. A flagship brand, it: promotes knowledge of the German language abroad and fosters international cultural cooperation. provides information on Germany s cultural, social and political life. recognises the challenges of globalisation and values cultural diversity as an asset. Education aim: To support and provide the education sector with reasons why learning languages (and German specifically) is vital to the national curriculum.

4 Did you know.. Nearly 100 million people speak German in Europe An important life skill, opens the door to new cultures - and important for business, too Germany is the UK s largest non-english speaking trading partner. Germany is the export powerhouse in Europe. More than 2,500 German companies employ some 450,000 people in the UK many big brands represented, including: BMW, Bayer, Siemens and VW. = German Language Advantage, but many challenges: provision/take up at GCSE, AS/A2 etc.

6 GERMANY - MEMORIES OF A NATION Seite 6 Goethe-Institut GERMAN AT KEY STAGE 4, TEACHING RESOURCES STU/KS4/EN HTM Germany: memories of a nation is an exhibition presented by the British Museum from October 2014 until January It examines elements of German history from the past 600 years in the context of the fall of the Berlin Wall 25 years ago. How does Germany view its past and its present? And how did those views come to be formed?

Link with your local peer schools at primary feeder and secondary level 4. Run events which celebrate German German Languages Day 5. Link and participate in local initiatives: Routes into Languages/World of Work/Business 6. Optimise Career events and highlight the Language Advantage 7. Share Best practice, Case Studies 8. Develop your UK-German links school visits, partner schools (project based) 9.
