ARTS PROGRAMME 2015/16 BISHOP LUFFA SCHOOL ARTS FACULTY Autumn 2015 edition

Welcome The Arts Faculty are excited to announce our upcoming programme of performances and events throughout the year. In line with the school ethos Always our best because everyone matters, the Arts Faculty aims to provide pupils with the opportunity to collaborate, perform and create a wide variety of work. 2015/16 marks the second year of our Artsmark Gold status, awarded to schools in recognition of their excellent arts and culture. This year we are pleased to be building on our strong links with Chichester Festival Theatre and plans are in place to widen this out to a range of other cultural organisations as the year progresses. We have an exciting programme of events planned this year. Highlights include the Annual Festival of Lessons and Carols held at the Chichester Cathedral, a truly memorable occasion with both traditional and new music to celebrate the Christmas season. We are also very excited to announce this years School Production, Seussical a quirky and heartwarming musical based on the books of Dr Seuss. Later in the year we will be undertaking the annual House Drama competition and Fruition, the Arts Festival which incorporates, among other things, the prestigious Art Exhibition. Thank you for your on-going support of all of our Arts events and we look forward to welcoming you in the coming year. Cheryl Williams Head of Arts Faculty

ARTSMARK GOLD We are very proud to be an Artsmark Gold school. Only 13% of secondary schools in England holds Artsmark status, very few being Artsmark Gold. Artsmark is Arts Council England s flagship programme which enables schools and other organization's to evaluate, strengthen and celebrate their arts and cultural provision. It is delivered by Trinity College London and 10 regional Bridge organization's drive participation. Achieving Artsmark Gold status demonstrates that Bishop Luffa has a number of very special qualities. It demonstrates that we: have an excellent arts and cultural offer are forward thinking and open to development are committed to investing in our staff and young people are committed to listening to our students and providing opportunities for our community have an effective approach to building sustainable relationships with arts and cultural organisations value the arts and culture through a broad and balanced curriculum

The Art Exhibition As part of Fruition the Art department showcased some of the fantastic work produced by our GCSE and A-level students. We were hugely impressed by the achievements of our artists, as too were the visitors... Lovely to see student styles and influences coming together in expressive, often beautiful and arresting images A very impressive mix of work. Very high quality and creative So much talent, some original ideas, very thought provoking. Too much to take in Thank you Our exhibition stayed up for two weeks giving many of our pupils the opportunity to visit the exhibition as part of their Art lessons, an experience they thoroughly enjoyed and learnt a great deal from..

ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY From last year Arundel Museum On the evening of Fruition, visitors from Arundel museum came to view the art exhibition and selected five works from both GCSE and A Level to be exhibited in the museum as part of the Arundel Festival. We very much hope to see our students work there again next year! The Sixth form studio space Last year we opened up the space outside the art rooms for our 6th form students to use as studio space outside of their timetabled lessons; they've made the most of it and it's now a thriving hub of creativity! Coming very soon...we'll be looking for pupils in KS3 to help create some of the props needed for the upcoming school production Seussical.

Tickets available on Parentmail from January A musical perfect for the whole family, Seussical takes us into the world of Dr. Seuss, where we revisit beloved characters including The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie, and JoJo. The Cat in the Hat guides us into The Jungle of Nool where we see Horton, the kind hearted elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whoville. He meets JoJo, a Who child sent to military school for thinking too many thinks. Horton decides he must protect the speck of dust on a nearby clover, while at the same time protecting an abandoned egg left to his care by the lazy Mayzie la Bird. Horton tries to convince the other animals in The Jungle of the existence of the Whos, but he is ridiculed and put on trial for insanity. Only his loyal neighbor, Gertrude McFuzz, never loses faith in him. Eventually, the two fall in love. Now one of the most widely produced musicals in the country, Seussical weaves a story of friendship, loyalty and love. Despite all odds, Horton and Gertrude band together to save the Whos, free Horton, and restore peace and unity to the Jungle of Nool. Charming Seussical teaches us the power of being unique, and the importance of fighting for your beliefs.

The programme is in two halves, with refreshments available during the interval. All seats, apart from school guests, are unreserved. Doors open at 6.00pm Bishop Luffa Instrumental Lessons Scheme How does it all work? Learning to play an instrument can be a rewarding and challenging lifelong skill and hobby. Ask any musician why they wanted to learn an instrument and each will have a different answer. Some might recall an early musical experience in their early childhood, some might be fortunate to have other members of their family who are musical and they have had music around them in their home, as part of their growing up. Today, pupils tend start to learn to play an instrument in their primary school. However, for many different reasons, some miss out of this opportunity. At Bishop Luffa, I am pleased to offer this unique opportunity to all of our pupils. Lessons are taught by a team of visiting peripatetic teachers. These are professional and qualified musicians who visit many schools teaching a range of instruments. All lessons require a fee which broadly varies around the recommended standard of per 30 minute lesson, with an average of TEN lessons being provided per term. Mr H Thomas Director of Muisc

All KS3 Bishop Luffa pupils take part in the Beaver computational challenge during the 9-13 November each year. They have to solve a number of computational problems, which helps them develop their analytical skills. Pupils who score well can have their names on the wall of fame on the Beaver Challenge website. Digital Leaders The schools pupil digital leaders attend a conference in November where they learn more about being a digital leader and meet other leaders from around the region. Pupils with good or excellent knowledge of computing are encouraged to apply to join the team at Bishop Luffa. Applications are open to all Years and take place in Sep/Oct. Applicants have an interview and have to give a presentation. December 2015 The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries. Anyone anywhere can organize an Hour of Code event. One-hour tutorials are available in over 40 languages. No experience needed. Ages 4 to 104. All KS3 Bishop Luffa pupils take part as an introduction to coding.

There are plenty of opportunities to be part of the production team for the various performances and events happening throughout the year. You might be interested in costume design, lighting, sound or photography. Our backstage teams play a vital role in the success and professionalism of the Arts Faculty events. Student Technical Team As you maybe aware Bishop Luffa School has a long tradition of involving pupils and students in extra-curricular activities. Each year the school puts on many events, from the yearly Fashion Show, Charity Week, School Play, Languages and Arts Festivals to regular Eucharists and school concerts. As you can imagine these events take time and effort to prepare and run. We have always encouraged students with an interest in learning about and helping with these events as part of the Student Technical Team. They get a chance to learn about sound and lighting from concept to execution as well as event designing, promotion and organizing. There are several courses we can offer, and training throughout the year. The Arts Award scheme can also be completed through the team.

BEHIND THE SCENES Front of House With the increasing number of performances and events happening in the Arts Faculty we are looking for an enthusiastic and committed team of pupils who will be responsible for overseeing Front of House activities. This will involve promoting the events and selling tickets at lunchtimes and before performances, escorting guests to their seats and selling programmes. If you are interested in finding out more please see Mrs Williams. Hair and Make-up This year`s school production will certainly provide many opportunities for creative hair and make-up designs. We are looking for a team of pupils to not only help the cast with their hair and make-up for the performances but to also play a key role in designing the overall look for the show. If you are interested in being involved please see Mrs Williams.
