Winchester District CAB Hampshire Adviceline Winchester District CAB with offices in Winchester city and at Bishops Waltham and weekly outreaches at Alresford, Denmead and Wickham have just implemented Hampshire Adviceline. This is the telephone advice service across most bureaux in Hampshire. The client will phone from a landline: and from mobiles They will be then be asked in key in their local telephone code eg Winchester is 01962, and will be automatically put through to their local bureau and if they are busy the technology then finds a bureau that is free to take their call. If the advice then given is that a full advice interview is required at their local bureau the bureau will then contact the client direct to make a suitable convenient time. The 0844 number will be changed shortly to a 0300 number making it more affordable to our clients. Clients can of course still drop in for advice at our offices and outreach during opening times. Ageing Well Time to Talk Age Concern Hampshire launches counselling service for people with memory loss or dementia. Over 18,000 people in Hampshire live with dementia, with one third of them living alone. By 2021, this figure is predicted to rise to 26,000. Counseling can help someone with memory problems or dementia to live with their condition more positively. Sharing experiences with someone who understands in a therapeutic setting can help reconnect, engage and empower individuals. It can also have an effect on reducing feelings of anxiety, loss or isolation. Age Concern Hampshireâ s new Time to Talk service is offering professional counselling sessions in Fareham and Wickham for anyone in Hampshire who is over 50 with memory loss or dementia. There is no charge for counselling, although donations towards the service are gratefully received at the end of each counselling relationship. Age Concern Hampshire South East Health & Wellbeing Manager Kym Devine said: â œno matter what stage the memory loss, or where the person may be on their dementia journey, Age Concern Hampshire can now offer professional, non-judgmental and caring therapeutic support when they most need it. â œthis new counselling service forms part of our wider services for people with dementia and memory loss. These include specially trained day care staff at our Wellbeing Centres and our Knowing Me project which helps individuals express and record their unique life story so that it can be communicated more easily with the various people who work with and support them.â For more information about Time to Talk call Age Concern Hampshire on Steady and Strong Classes For over 50â s, these individually tailored community based balance and strength classes, are delivered by qualified professionals. The classes look at preventing falls in older people and helping them to stay independent for longer. The classes consist of low intensity exercises, helping to improve strength and balance, therefore helping to improve the quality of life and helping build confidence in day to day tasks. VOLUNTEERS HELP OLDER PEOPLE UNLOCK  100,000 A new service, providing information and advice for older people is already paying dividends. In its first 12 months, Age UK Winchester's team has supported older residents on a range of issues, including helping them claiming over  100,000 in annual benefits that they were entitled to. Already, 1,000 older people, their families and carers, have used the free service with queries about care options, finding a home, social activities, money & benefits, utility bills, local services and products for the elderly. Feedback shows that that the information is "down to earth, helpful and easy to understand." We provide advice in the office or by telephone and can arrange home visits for those cannot get into the office. Our benefits experts can check what benefits people are entitled to and help fill out forms for benefit applications. Our team is made up of volunteers, who are fully trained to offer clear, professional, confidential advice. To find out more, call Lyn Gardner on or pop into the office in the Colebrook Centre in Colebrook Street.Age UK Winchester depends on volunteers and fundraising. It would love to hear from anyone who might be interested in volunteering, however much time they have to spare. Food & Friendship Co-ordinator Paul Simmonds says: â œgood food and good company is something that we all enjoy. â œwe are delighted that the scheme has been able to reach so many people across the county and have had funding confirmed from Hampshire County Council and ten district councils for another year.â To find out how Food & Friendship scheme can support you or to sign up as a partner organisation or volunteer, contact Paul Simmonds on Healthier Communities Good Neighbour Awards
4 Page 4 of 5 Hampshire County Council hosted the Good Neighbour awards and the Making a Difference awards for young people, where 70 county residents were honoured for making a positive difference to the life of others in their communities. Local Winchester resident Tania Russell was one of those honoured for her volunteer work with the Community Cookery skills courses. Tania has successfully run two community courses in Bishop's Waltham and Swanmore. The course is primarily aimed at men over 55 years of age who are single or finding themselves with increasing responsibility of cooking, due to ill health or infirmity of their spouse of partner. The course promotes good nutrition and the part it has to play in maintaining health and wellbeing. Community Cookery Skills Thanks to money awarded by a Public Health Funding grant from Hampshire County Council, Winchester City Council will be running another six week course of Community Cookery Skills classes for men over 55 years of age. The class will be held at Colden Common Community Centre, starting on Monday 9 th June until 14 th July. The weekly sessions will be from 11:30am- 1:30pm. The course will demonstrate how to cook a range of simple, nutritious meals from start to finish with an opportunity for refreshments & socialising afterwards. In a friendly relaxed atmosphere those attending the course will learn: How to cook a range of simple meals from start to finish Food shopping ideas Food hygiene and storage The importance of healthy eating to health and well-being All places must be booked in advance. Please contact Nicola Lawrence on or nlawrence@winchester.gov.uk The six-week course costs just  1 per session and all ingredients are provided. The funding has been allocated to a carefully selected number of exciting projects which will be delivered over the course of the year to address specific priorities identified in the district action plan. These are: Lanterns Childrenâ s Centre - Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme: The aim of this scheme is to encourage parents to continue to breastfeed in designated places within the community. Shops within the community will be certified with a logo to indicate that this is a breastfeeding friendly place. The Carroll Centre - Young Parentsâ project: This Young Parentsâ Support Group offers 2 hour weekly sessions for mothers in their late teens and early 20â s. This programme aims to offer Healthy Lifestyles to young people and their families.
