1 The Newsletter of The Riverina Anglican College Phone: Fax: Website: www. trac.nsw.edu.au T E R M 4 W E E K O C T O B E R, From the Principal s Desk Our Year 12 students have reported favourably on the first HSC exam papers. The message is that if you have studied and prepared then the papers are an opportunity to show the examiners your competency in the subject. Year 12s are reminded to arrive with time to spare and to check the start times of the papers. Students more than one hour late for an exam will not be able to sit the exam. Next week the new Captains and Vice Captains will attend a Civic Reception with other school leaders from Wagga Wagga. I have been pushing for such an event for some time as it is a great opportunity to celebrate the positive leadership of our seniors. Congratulations to Kumar Gupta who has been selected as a participant in the NSW Constitution Convention to be held in Sydney. Also, well done to the large number of students and families involved in the recent Relay for Life for the Cancer Council. Early this week we were unable to send or receive s due to a problem with our provider in Sydney. If you sent an after Friday, 9 October and have not had a reply, please contact us. Ian Grant Principal Unidentified Deposit We received an unidentified deposit overnight. The only information we have is CBA TRAC for an amount of $1,540. If you believe this is your deposit, please contact me as soon as possible. Lynda Miller Term 4 Fee Statements Term 4 Fee statements were ed last week. If you have not received yours, please contact me as soon as possible. Lynda Miller Welfare Year 9 will attend a mental health program entitled Tough and Up on Thursday at the RSL Club. The presentation has been organised by the Riverina Bluebell group and will be delivered by author and illustrator Matthew Johnstone. There is also a parent session in the evening at the club. We hope Year 9 gain some valuable lessons from the afternoon. Michael Stubbs Mathematics Competitions Results On the 30 July, 27 students from Year 7 to Year 12 competed in the Australian Mathematics Competition. This competition is known to be difficult by nature, as the style of the questions focuses on students ability to problem solve by thinking creatively and applying knowledge. We are very proud of the students results this year, with over a half receiving a certificate. Thank you to all of those students who attempted the task and particular congratulations to the following award winners. Students who received a Credit, within the top 50% of the state were: Rebecca Scott, James Taylor, Finn Buckley, Fatima Siddiqui, Aydan Whitton, Jordan Hawke and Maria George (Year 7). Lachlan Billet and Niyousha Alizadeh Shabani (Year 8). Albert Demskoy, Jeremy Bloor and Madelie Joubert (Year 9). Amy Gardner (Year 10). Students who received a Distinction, within the top 15% of the state were Cameron Sowter and Alexandre Deloire (Year 8). Whooping Cough We have been advised of an increase in whooping cough notifications, with school-aged children prevalent among these. Your local public health unit can provide advice about whooping cough on or visit the NSW

2 P A G E 2 Health website: whoopingcough/pages/information-for-childcareand-schools.aspx Administration Immunisations Reminder The next round of Immunisations will be given on Tuesday, 20 October to Year 7 (girls and boys). Only students who received the first immunisation will be given the second and third immunisations. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Barbara Wilson on or the Public Health Unit on Ian Begg Year 12, 2015 The Year 12 Graduation Assembly, Church Service and Dinner at the end of Term 3 was a huge success. All students dressed to impress and everyone enjoyed the day. A big thank you to Annelize Moore for giving up her time to help me with the room set up for the Dinner. We wish all the Year 12 students luck for their HSC exams. Emma Smith Lockhart Spirit of the Land Congratulations to Xavier Mamo who won the Youth Prize for his creative rooster sculpture at the recent Lockhart Spirit of the Land exhibition. Fantastic work! Merryl Pendergast Student News TRAC students are often known for their bright academic spirit, community involvement and ambitious leadership skills. Congratulations to Kumar Gupta, in Year 11, who has shown these qualities. Kumar has been selected to participate in the National Schools Constitutional Convention in Sydney in November. This event aims to increase young Australians knowledge about the Australian Constitution and the role it plays in our democracy. Kumar admits that the selection process was initially intimidating: he was required to write and submit a paper about the role of the Australian Senate and the skills he d bring to the convention. Now that he has been accepted, he is extremely excited at the opportunity to work alongside other like-minded students, to discuss referendum questions, as well as formulating plans and ideas to make the Senate better for Australian citizens. He recommends that future Year 11 and 12 students apply and to approach their teachers for help with writing their submissions. Albeit a huge challenge to any seventeen-year-old, the convention is known to ignite opportunities for leadership and provide a glimpse into the world of politics, ethics and citizenship. TRAC wishes Kumar the very best of luck! Cheyenne Bardos School Captain TRAC and Field Year 9 Photography Excursion Last Thursday, 8 October, Year 9 Photography students went on a photo shoot excursion to Coolamon to take photos for the upcoming Up-To- Date Store Photographic competition. Students enjoyed the marvellous weather and took numerous images of the scenic town and countryside. Lindie Mannion Voucher Prizes Prize-winners at our College Presentations each year are given vouchers which can be redeemed at various local businesses. These businesses have an arrangement to be reimbursed by the College for those vouchers which they collect. If you have a business and would like to be included on our vouchers, please contact me at the school office for more information. Anna Conyers Congratulations to Georgia Kohlhagen, Lauren Greenhalgh, Edwina Matthews and Rosalie Lambert (above) who represented the College at the NSW Inter-schools Equestrian competition at Tumbarumba on Sunday. Well done girls. The 2015 NSW Interschools Downhill Mountain Bike Championships will take place in November. Interested students are to see a member of the PD/H/PE department. While this Term is a little quieter on the sporting

3 P A G E 3 field, there are still opportunities for our students to become involved. The Open Cricket team will begin their Douglas Shield competition with a home game against St Andrew s Cathedral School next week while the juniors have a bye in their first round of the Wiburd Shield. The College Golf team will play in the CWWHS competition at the Country Club in coming weeks along with the Tennis and Water Polo teams playing in their events. Until next week; Never give up! Failure and rejection are only the first step to succeeding. Jim Valvano Michael Stubbs Moving on from TRAC When a student is moving on from the College, notification in writing is required. Wherever possible, a Term s notice should be provided. The student is asked to complete a Student Clearance Form which is available from the College office. All text and library books, and locker keys need to be returned and uniform and fee payments finalised before the enrolment bond is returned. Absences and Punctuality All students are required to attend every day that the College is open. Parents are requested to notify the school in writing or by to absences@trac.nsw.edu.au if the student is to be absent on a particular day, giving the student s full name and reason for the absence. In the case of illness or unexpected absences, a note or must be sent to school on the day the student returns explaining the reason for the absence. At the latest, notes must be received by the office within two weeks of the absence. This note is a legal requirement of the Board of Studies and will be kept in the student s file. A note proforma may be found at the back of the student diary. Where the absence is to be extended, for example for several weeks travelling, a request form is available on the College website to be completed and sent the Principal. If the absence is approved a Certificate of Extended Leave will be issued. The school roll is marked in Homeroom or Year group meeting at 9.00am. If students arrive late they are required to report to the office before going to class, where a late pass will be issued and the time noted. A note from a parent or guardian is required explaining the reason for the late arrival to school. Persistent lateness disrupts school life and will be further investigated. A text message is sent daily to parents of students who are absent where no notification has been received. Only parents of students who have been marked absent at roll call or who have not signed in late will receive a SMS. Parents replies to this message giving the reason for the absence will be stored in the school files and are accepted as a note.
