Job title: Reports to: Grade: Information Security Officer NG7 Purpose: To develop, monitor and control infrastructure security. To investigate reported breaches of security, and contribute to the development of a secure infrastructure environment to support the storage, manipulation and transmission of information held in the organisation. Principal Accountabilities: The post holder will: 1. Support the Information Security Officer and the Head of Security and Compliance in the planning and development of an appropriate Information Security operational plan. Make a major contribution to the development of infrastructure security architecture, services and systems within the University environment. 2. Identify and evaluate opportunities for the development of infrastructure security and promote a culture of continuous improvement within the team. 3. Work collaboratively with other technical specialists across Information Services to ensure security, consistency, continuity, and integrity of all 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd line services and systems. 4. Contribute to the development and maintenance of appropriate University Information security policies & procedures. 5. Play a key role the delivery of IS projects delivering high quality innovative approaches to information security as identified. 6. Lead or commission suitable security awareness training and educational activities; lead or commission infrastructure security risk assessments. 7. Develop and maintain effective relationships with all departments across the University whilst promoting information security awareness. 8. Investigate reported breaches of infrastructure security and undertake investigations in line with University procedures. 9. Stay abreast of information security issues and regulatory changes affecting higher education, participate in national policy and practice discussions, and communicate to the University on a regular basis about those topics; engage in professional development to maintain continual growth in professional skills and knowledge essential to the position.

Deputise for the Information Security Officer as required, and undertake such other responsibilities as determined by the Head of Information Security & Compliance in conjunction with the post holder from time to time. Context The is a member of the Information Security & Compliance Team that resides within the operational group of Business Information Services. This newly defined Information Security team will focus on information and infrastructure security, access, authentication, security policy development, and on raising user awareness in support of the University s business and risk strategies. The will report to the Information Security Officer, and will support the provision, implementation, and on-going support of an effective and efficient Information security service, and will be expected to promote a secure, safe, and successful service and support environment for our students and staff. S/he will assist in the development and delivery of a comprehensive information security strategy to optimize the security position of the University. Ensuring the security of the University s ICT infrastructure has become increasingly complex and critical to services and systems which underpin the successful delivery of Teaching and Learning. The University continues to invest heavily in network security to minimize the risk of compromising sensitive staff/student data, utilizing services and systems such as Firewalls, Intrusion Detection and Prevention, Web-Cache, Network Access Control and Network Business Anomaly detection platforms. The will be expected to play a major part in the development of an appropriate security architecture and the implementation of suitable security policies, practices and procedures. The post holder will be expected to take every opportunity to nurture cross-team project working and to develop a culture of sharing knowledge and information throughout IS. S/he will be expected to foster strong working relationships with key University staff, as well as peers within 13 th February v1.1 2

S/he will also be expected to assist in work with Police officials during serious breaches of security or anti-terror investigations Dimensions No specific budgetary or line management responsibility All Information Services appointments are made on the understanding that staff will serve at any of the service points should the need arise. Information Services works to service standards and the post holder must work in accordance with agreed service levels. The University operates seven days a week and some information services are open in the evenings and weekends. This might occasion the working of unsocial hours. 4 Person Specification Essential criteria Qualifications A relevant degree in an ICT-related or management subject or equivalent qualification or significant relevant work experience. A qualification in computing at professional level or demonstrable equivalent experience. - e.g. MSc in IT Security or CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Practitioner) Training and Experience Significant experience of working in a large and complex or multi-site technical IT environment Knowledge and experience of key National and International Information security and digital data standards and laws relevant to the academic and research sectors including: The Freedom of Information Act, The Data Protection Act, NHS IT Information Security policies (including patient data), The Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, The Human Rights Act and The Privacy and Electronic Communications (EU Directive) Regulations. Experience of working with common information security management frameworks, such as International Standards Organization (ISO) 2700x, Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT). Experience in IT Security Tooling/Operations and delivering Security projects. Appreciation of information risk concepts and principles as a means of relating business needs to security controls; an excellent understanding of information security concepts, protocols, industry best practices and strategies. Proficiency in performing security, risk, business impact, control and vulnerability assessments, and in defining treatment strategies. Experience of working with a range of IT infrastructure technologies and models, including cloud technologies, outsourcing, SaaS and virtualisation. An understanding of operating system internals Desirable Criteria Membership of a relevant professional body e.g. British Computer Society A relevant qualification in ITIL. A relevant qualification in Prince2 project management. Knowledge of and experience in developing and documenting security architecture and plans, including strategic, tactical and project plans. Solid experience in architectural design and implementation of security tooling solutions in a large complex environment, as well as technical configuration of the solution to meet security standards Proven experience in project management, and SDLC methodologies Familiarity with the principles of cryptography and cryptanalysis. 13 th February v1.1 4

5 Aptitude and abilities and network protocols. Strong analytical skills to analyse security requirements and relate them to appropriate security controls. Up to date knowledge of key information security technologies including encryption, vulnerability and penetration testing, compliance checking, anti-virus, firewall, other perimeter security and intrusion detection technologies. Experience creating, maintaining and delivering Information security training, working collaboratively with staff development professionals. Excellent interpersonal communication, and teamwork skills. Demonstrable and strong commitment to the principles of information security, personal privacy and compliance with legislation, regulations and standards. Demonstrated ability to build relationships at different levels of the organisation and capable of working with and earning the respect of stakeholders at all levels in the organisation. The ability to work and communicate effectively with technical specialists and managers across the IT organisation, with demonstrable technical understanding and credibility. The ability to communicate technical information to a non-technical audience, and to adapt both style and content to meet the differing needs of different audiences. Demonstrated ability to operate with in a secure environment on sensitive data, data request and information security incidents against strict information security policies. Absolutely trustworthy. Ability to support a highly mobile and dynamic IT workforce.
