Coral Springs, FL, Education: PhD Florida Atlantic University - Doctor of Philosophy in Geosciences ( ) GPA 3.96 Dissertation topic: Sea Level Rise: Comparing Perceived Risk to Actual Risk in Broward County, FL M.S. Environmental Studies - Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, FL ( ) GPA 3.91 B.S. Environmental Engineering - Tufts University, Medford, MA ( ) GPA 3.38 Tufts Abroad Program, University College London ( ) Current Work: Science Director for Coastal Risk Consulting, LLC (5/2014-present) o Geospatial modeling and analysis of coastal climate impacts including: flooding, tidal o changes, sea level rise, groundwater saturation, land subsidence. o Development of Coastal Risk Rapid Assessment model and Flood Inundation Risk Score o and Table (FIRST ) o Expert assistance to individuals, communities, businesses, and governments to get climate o ready and storm safe. o Expert consultation on project feasibility and longevity and Basis of Design Studies for o climate impacts and tropical storms, including: new residential and commercial construction; o existing structure retrofit; and, government infrastructure adaptation. o Reverse Environmental Impact Statements (REIS); Climate Risk Environmental Impact o Statements (CREIS). Grant Writing Consultant for University of Miami (10/2014-present) o NSF Science and Technology Center grant proposal writing on science policy interaction and climate literacy. The grant is focused on solutions-oriented climate/sea-level rise research. Goals: (1) decision support and planning in South Florida; (2) minimize risk in response to climate variability; and, (3) develop an education framework to support these initiatives. Policy Analyst for South Florida Regional Planning Council) (3/2013 present) o Miami Dade MPO Access to Healthy Living Plan - To identify gaps in transit and mobility infrastructure which make it difficult or impossible for transportation system users to access educational resources, health care services, healthy foods, cultural, employment, and recreational opportunities, I am working to map indicators and assess policies and practices to present meaningful results and recommendationson how transportation system can be improved to ensure access to opportunities. o Adaptation Action Areas To steer Florida s coastal communities towards planning and adapting to sea level rise (SLR), a new state statue presents unique possibilities. To provide resources, I wrote a case study, guidebook and managed podcasts, and a video to illustrate a step-by-step process in designating and prioritizing areas vulnerable to coastal flooding and other impacts related to sea level rise. Outreach and communication is another crucial component in this NOAA funded project aimed at increasing resilience. I have presented numerous times on the topic to groups such as county commissioners. o Data Common Conversation This project required working Boston s MAPC to provide a foundation for a regional Data Common. Through a series of meetings with elected officials,
2 municipal employees and representatives from a range of non-profits, a collective interest was engaged in using data to create opportunity. o Citi Community Development Equity Indicators Project - Using social equity indicators, I created a visualization environment (WEAVE) to illustrate the usefulness of inquiry based data exploration. This was part of an effort to better understand our communities and improve policy, and promote informed decision making. I presented initial results at a series of focus groups that included various stakeholders and elected officials. Project Manager and Research Coordinator for Florida Center for Environmental Studies (CES) (ces.fau.edu)(1/2012 present) o Current work: I am writing a white paper entitled, Sustainability Science Principles in Practice, as a review of a series of CES meetings on recommendations for Everglades restoration under the uncertainty of climate change. o Past Projects: Public Health Impacts from Sea Level Rise on Vulnerable Populations in Southeast Florida (Kresge grant), Assessing Southeast Florida s Subsidized Insurance System in the Context of Sea Level Rise (Renaissance Re Grant), Hillsborough County Transportation Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Pilot (Hillsborough County MPO Grant) o Planning and collaboration for Anglo-Floridian partnership to exchange adaptation strategies between the UK and the US o Operations and management for the Hydrology of the Everglades in the Context of Climate Change Workshop (3/2012) o Administration and participant recruitment for Sea Level Rise: Risk and Response Summit (6/2012) o Technical Coordinator - Collaboration, Data processing, and Methodology Report writing for MIT Scenario Planning and Alternative Futures Project o Grant proposal co-author for NSF, NOAA, FDOT, Hillsborough County FHWA Adaptation Pilot Project, Broward MPO, and Florida Seagrant o Mentor and organizer for Interdisciplinary Mapping Student Group Consultant for Climate Leadership Engagement Opportunities (CLEO) (11/2013 1/2014) o Good Government Initiative My work entailed modeling and analysis of storm surge on top of sea level rise for future scenarios, coupled with presentation of results at a workshop for Miami-Dade elected officials.
