It is the beating heart of Christianity. Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Jason Harrod (whom many of you have heard in his two concerts at St. Alban s) has a song where he sings, Mercy is the only thing worth anything. The wonderful thing about God s mercy is that it transforms us into people who show mercy to others. We help and serve those around us in concrete ways. As God has served us in Christ, so we serve others. As St. John wrote, We love because he first loved us (1 John 1:19). In this issue we are celebrating the ways God is using St. Alban s to reach out to people in our community with real help. We have recently welcomed two new ministry partners to our Outreach Center. Last month, the Family Abuse Center (FAC) began hosting a weekly support group in our Outreach Center (ORC). It is for women who have been affected by domestic violence. And this month, Skillpoint Alliance will begin offering their Gateway workforce development class in the ORC. Specifically, they will train clients as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs). This will allow the participants to gain entry-level medical professions, breaking the cycle of poverty. 2 The entrance of Skillpoint Alliance to Waco is just one part of the many-faceted approach to Waco s growth that has come out of Prosper Waco. This initiative (at prosperwaco.org) grew out of a small group of Wacoans talking about how we can deal with our community s 30% poverty rate. Two members of that group were St. Alban s members Tom Stanton and Pat Atkins. Prosper Waco now brings together churches, non-profits, businesses, healthcare providers, and educators and school administrators to improve education, health, and financial security for all people in Waco. It is partly through the initiative of Prosper Waco that Skillpoint is coming to Waco. And I couldn t be more excited to welcome them to St. Alban s. Thanks to all at St. Alban s who renovated the rooms for Skillpoint, and who have the open hearts to welcome these wonderful organizations to our campus. Rest Stop Rev. Zimmerman and his family will be on vacation from June 22-July 26. Our new clergy, the Rev. Ben Maddison and Deacon Al Melis, will be available for pastoral care. Contact the church office for assistance.
3 OUTREACH CENTER Partnering for maximum results St. Alban s collaborates with 3 service-oriented groups This summer, St. Alban s welcomes Waco Skillpoint Alliance (SA), a 20-year-old workforce development organization based in Austin, to the Outreach Center. The Parish also begins relationships with ProsperWaco, through Skillpoint Alliance, and the Family Abuse Center. Skillpoint Alliance inspires and prepares people for high-demand jobs in the region with Rapid Workforce Training for Adults and Project-Based STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) for Youth. It is part of many initiatives being fostered by ProsperWaco. Skillpoint Alliance was asked to come to Waco by Mayor Malcolm Duncan to address the workforce development needs identified as part of the Prosper Waco initiative, said Lonny Stern, Senior Director, Business Development, at Skillpoint Alliance. One of Skillpoint Alliance s signature programs will begin at the Outreach Center this summer. The Gateway program is for Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) training. It condenses a one- to two-year degree into a one- to two-month certification so participants can quickly gain employment. There is no cost to students of the program. Skillpoint Alliance is just one of many initiatives being propelled by ProsperWaco, a collective impact model that seeks to consolidate and build upon the efforts of existing nonprofits and community leaders. It brings together leaders and organizations in the areas of education, health and financial security to identify challenges, articulate a shared vision, establish measurable goals, facilitate implementation of strategies to address each challenge, monitor progress, share data and resources, and engage a broad spectrum of community partners. Pat Atkins and Tom Stanton, members of St. Alban s, are on the board of ProsperWaco. The Family Abuse Center (FAC) exists to eliminate domestic violence in Central Texas by sheltering victims of domestic violence and by preventing abuse from occurring through intervention and education. They offer support for those impacted by domestic violence, education for the community, support for children from violent homes, and tools to raise awareness. They approached St. Alban s this spring with an idea for a new initiative: a support group for women who are survivors of domestic violence. Women coming out of violent situations need a safe place to find support, encouragement, and strength. This is our chance to provide a resource that many have been asking for! The few who have attended keep returning. This one hour of selfcare time is immensely life-changing, to know they are not alone and can have a voice, said Natalie Jones, a case manager at FAC. The agency approached St. Alban s because of the parish s reputation of opening our facility to the community, as well as our past support of the FAC. We gladly agreed to host the group here. For the past several weeks, quietly and out of the spotlight, this group has been meeting at St. Alban s. Please pray for the women and leaders of this group, and give thanks for how God has allowed us to provide a safe place for those in need. May it be a place of healing and redemption. 4 ST. ALBAN S DAY Some good, saintly fun At the end of a wonderful week of Vacation Bible Camp, the church celebrated St. Alban s Day June 21 with worship under the Big Tent on the Great Lawn. Campers sang one of the songs they had learned. After the service, there was food, games, and fun for every age. You never have to tell children more than once to have fun. 4 Once again, Dunk the Priest was a big favorite and helped raise funds for Malawi Missions. That s a natural smile, don t you think...

8 VACATION BIBLE CAMP JUNE 2015 Dear VBC Volunteers, Thank you for serving with me as we embarked on a VBC for the first time in a while! It was a fun and exciting time at Camp Discovery and there were so many that helped make it that way. We discovered how Jesus works through us in our everyday lives. Jesus saves us, gives us courage, faith, and His wisdom to serve Him. Everyone is so busy during this time of year, and we all have to make choices as to how we will spend our time and our energy. I am so grateful to each of you that you followed God s call to serve His children. I could not have done this without so many helping hands! Thank you for helping our little treasures learn more about Jesus. Jole Cromwell We need two Safeguarded individuals to lead Children s Chapel on July 12. Please contact Jole Cromwell if you are available. 8

Valley Mills Dr. Time TBD Aug. 22 Hawaiian Falls 12 Noon to 2:00 PM 900 Lake Shore Drive MUSIC MINISTRY GETTING TO KNOW: William Priest Singing has always been one of my favorite things to do. I joined my school choir in elementary school and never looked back. In high school, choir was at the center of my life. I was in two choirs under the direction of Florence Scattergood (a member of St. Alban s). Mrs. Scatt, as we called her, helped me develop confidence as a singer and performer. At age 16, I started singing and acting at the Scarborough Renaissance Festival, which I still do every spring. At Baylor, I found a musical family in Sing Alliance and performed at All-University Sing for four years. After graduation, the lack of choir left a void in my life until I came to St. Alban s, where I found not only a wonderful choir, but also a loving fellowship of believers, and I knew I wanted to be a part of both. I couldn t be happier with my church home. My love of music is rivaled only by my love of languages. After taking French in high school, I signed up for Latin in my first semester of college as a fun elective. I loved Latin so much that I added Greek for a BA in Classics. I also minored in German after spending a semester abroad at the University of Freiburg. For the past three years, I have been teaching Latin and Intro to Foreign Languages at Vanguard College Preparatory School. After graduation the lack of choir left a void in my life, until I came to St. Alban s. 10

Make a Difference in Waco: Unique Volunteer Opportunity If you have been looking for a practical way to engage the next generation and create positive change in our local community, we have a great opportunity for you! In the school year Waco ISD is looking to partner with the Waco community (including churches) to launch over 20 community service learning (CSL) groups inside of Indian Springs Middle School. This initiative grew out of substantive conversations among Dr. Bonny Cain, superintendent, and local pastors, including our Rector, the Rev. Aaron M. G. Zimmerman, on how to address issues of poverty and risky behavior among Waco youth. These CSL groups will integrate community service with instruction and reflection in order to teach civic responsibility, increase local leadership, improve self-esteem and strengthen our community. In order to make these learning groups function, we are inviting local community members to volunteer as leaders of these small groups. The commitment is for the academic year, 1-3 hours per week. Next Steps: If you are interested in being a part of this great opportunity, please contact our Deacon, the Rev. Alberto Melis at Al is coordinating this effort to recruit volunteers from all three Episcopal Churches in Waco. 12
