1 APPROVED AT THE MEETING ON NOVEMBER 5, 2012 MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING MONDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2012 CANTON CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION The Canton City School District Board of Education met for a Regular Meeting on Monday, October 8, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. at Timken High School, 521 Tuscarawas Street W, Canton, OH, Members present: Richard Milligan, Nadine McIlwain, Ryan Brahler, Ida Ross- Freeman and Lisa Gissendaner Staff members in attendance included Chris Smith, Adrian Allison, Tad Ellsworth and Jeff Gruber The meeting was called to order at 6:04 p.m. President Milligan presided. At this time, Mr. Milligan welcomed all people in attendance at the regularly scheduled meeting which included Lisa Reicosky of The Repository, CPEA President Geneva Parker, Nancy Molnar of the Akron Beacon Journal, and Derek Gordon of the City of Canton Mrs. McIlwain moved and Ms. Gissendaner seconded the motion the Canton City School District Board of Education Agenda for the October 8, 2012 Regular Meeting be approved with the following additions and addendums: Additions: Superintendent s Report Section A, Item II, add name Amy Lint Conn to names under District Data Meeting, Addendum items: Superintendents Report, Section A, Item II, add Christina Schiltz, Superintendents Report, Section A, add Item XI, Superintendents Report, Section B, add Item IX, Board of Education Report, add policies for first reading. At this time, McKinley Principal Chet Lenartowicz, Timken Principal Corey D. Grubbs, and Digital Academy Principal Minerva Morrow performed fall graduation ceremonies for students from the respective schools. After the ceremony, Principal Grubbs updated the Board of Education on school year happenings at Timken High School Ms. Gissendaner moved, seconded by Ms. Ross-Freeman that the Board of Education approves the minutes from September 10, 2012 meeting. Superintendent Smith provided response to the previous meeting s hearing of the public which included possibilities for Washington School, Michele Anderson asking the board to revisit substitute teacher rates, and Sam Lilly asking for the McKinley football team to wear pink as part of their uniforms in October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness month. No one signed up for the public speaks portion of the October 2012 meeting Mr. Brahler moved and Mrs. McIlwain seconded the motion the Board approve the following: It is recommended the financial statements, investments, Then & Now Report, Appropriation Transaction Report, and the District Employee by Fund Report for the month ended August 31, 2012 be approved by the Board of Education. Cole who served with the US Navy during the Vietnam War. 6

Every student received at least one new book and several students received more than one book. Belden Elementary School received the following: Dollar General donated all the supplies from their School Supply Drive. Diane Neal donated 2 large baskets filled with school and art supplies Blessings in a Backpack gave 40 backpacks filled with school supplies. Clarendon Elementary School received the following: Arlington Avenue Church of God donated Bookbags filled with school supplies. Aultman Hospital donated 2 boxes filled with school supplies. Walmart at Canton Center donated Teacher Reward Program with $1,000 in teacher reward supplies and $1,000 worth of school supplies for the children. Dueber Elementary School received the following: JR Rinaldi donated $100 worth of snacks for the after-school program. Marathon Petroleum donated $5,000. Glenmoor CAST group donated a large amount of school supplies. Fairmount Elementary School received the following: Greenwood Christian Church for donating 3 large boxes of school supplies Walmart donated 20 - $50 gift cards for teachers Gibbs Elementary School received the following: Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church donated Book bags, paper, pencils, Kleenex, markers and crayons. Aultman Hospital donated school supplies. North Canton Church of Christ donated snacks. Trinity Baptist Church donated school supplies. Harter Elementary received the following: St. George Serbian Eastern Orthodox Men s Club donated $800. Mason Elementary received the following: Christ Presbyterian Church donated $ Church of the Nazarene donated school supplies and back packs. Dollar General donated school supplies. NewPointe Community Church donated mulch and served by providing volunteers to assist with landscaping, interior and exterior projects. McGregor Elementary School received the following: 7

8 Stark County Community Foundation donated $2, for summer programming (Literacy on the Lawn) Holy Cross Lutheran Church donated school supplies, undergarments and socks for the entire school and summer volunteers for Literacy on the Lawn. Schreiber Elementary School received the following: Logan House Ministries (The Chapel) donated over 40 backpacks filled with school supplies Stone Elementary School received the following: Parkside Church in Green donated school supplies, food and volunteers for Stone s Back to School night. Youtz Elementary received the following: Arlington Avenue Church of God donated many book bags filled with school supplies. Holy Assumption Orthodox Church donated book bags filled with supplies. Trinity United Church of Christ donated many school supplies. North Canton Church of Christ donated snacks. Crenshaw Middle School received the following: Maltz Museum donated 4 family memberships valued at $ Palace Theatre donated 4 VIP Movie Passes valued at $ Canton Museum of Art donated 4 General Admission tickets. Hog Heaven donated a $10.00 gift card. Patty s Place donated a $10.00 gift card. Gregory s Family Restaurant donated a $10.00 gift card. Old Carolina Barbeque donated a $25.00 gift card. Arcadia Grille donated a $10.00 gift card. Canton Charge donated 4 free tickets. Subway Restaurant donated a free 3ft party sub. Buehlers Food Market donated a $25.00 gift card. Mount Union College donated a hoodie, t-shirt, pen and mouse pad Akron Aeros donated 4 tickets valued at $36.00 Dance by Mariah Studio donated 2 online dance lessons with Mariah valued at $30 Scott Talbot s Salon donated products valued at $50.00 McKinley High School received the following donations for their Nature Center: Buxton Roofing donated 10 square of three dimensional shingles and 10 square of tar paper. Coon Construction donated two interior windows for the building. Office Max donated $1,000 gift card District received the following donations: George and Sally Michael for a piano, teacher desk and 4-drawer file cabinet. Natatorium and the CCS Swim Team received the following donations: R.J. VanAlmen from the Greater Canton Aquatic Association donated a television and wall mount valued at $ Goggles for Guppies and SportFair Inc. donated 20 swimsuits and goggles. Note: This organization finds people to donate suits and goggles to lower income swim teams Mrs. McIlwain moved and Ms. Gissendaner seconded the motion the Board The Practical Nurse Program Canton City Schools requests that stipends be paid to the following for: packing, unpacking, and additional prep time as a result of painting and renovation of the LPN area of the White Annex up to 10 hours for two weeks and/or as needed at $7.70 per hour.
