I interviewed Sudanese refugees concerning 1) psychological and physical ailments attributed to the traumatic experiences of war; and 2) indigenous healing/religious methods currently used to address these ailments. 1999, Esteli, Nicaragua A four-week investigation of the trauma resulting from the massive destruction caused by Hurricane Mitch and the ensuing process of recovery. 1996, Sarajevo, Bosnia An investigation of living conditions and evident trauma six months after a cease-fire ending four years of civil war. RESEARCH AND TEACHING INTERESTS Crisis ministry, trauma, addiction, pre-marital counseling, cultural critique of western biomedical/psychodynamic assumptions, death and dying, grief, counseling with marginalized populations, theological anthropology, medical anthropology, anthropology of suffering, ethics of food consumption.
