2 Great tools for IT staff and support Production Quality AD integration Customizable Players Indexed, Searchable Information Slides, Captions Presentation Flexibility Security & Stability Embed Codes Standard Media Formats Reliable system Access restriction Media Import/Export 7 8 Ease of Use for Faculty Ease of Use for Students Scheduling Some faculty never need interact with recorders Recorders One-touch button Online Management Portal is very intuitive Playback - systemagnostic Very few complaints Works across all systems and devices It just works How Mediasite is used at TTU: Distance Learning Lecture Capture Scheduled Recordings Automates entire semester No effort for instructor Ad Astra Provides schedule Prevents room conflicts Mediasite has allowed me to bring the classroom to my place-bound students. -Dr. Marcus Tanner Instructor, Academic Operations and Services
3 Campus Learning, too Mediasite has provided a tool I can utilize in my oncampus courses. -Dr. Marcus Tanner Instructor, Academic Operations and Services The math club outreach program originally had a professor going in person to work with a few students once a week. A 2010 grant made it possible to scale this initiative to students around the world We chose MediaSite for a number of reasons - production quality probably being the biggest. Live streaming allows us to simultaneously conduct local and remote instances of the experience Topics Include: Forensic Ornithology Nuclear Medicine Aerospace Engineering Computer Science Actuarial Science Nanotechnology 17 The emphasis has been on exposing gifted students to content and careers they might otherwise not encounter. 18 3
4 Blackboard Migration Staff Training Legacy Video Files Better playback in Mediasite. Improved overall Bb performance. Smoother migration to Blackboard Learn. Mediasite Building Block interface. On-demand training has helped facilitate the deployment of unified communications to hundreds of staff members. Catalogs allow training material to be refreshed without changing the destination links Distance Teaching Distance Teaching Texas Tech was able to retain the expertise of a faculty member who moved to Oregon. Dr. Farris teaches synchronously using Microsoft Lync, then uploads the recording to Mediasite for student review. Dr. Farris talks about his experience using Lync to teach from a distance Microsoft Lync Microsoft Lync Several Publishing Options: Considerations: Finished video can include: Recording quality varies with computer/bandwidth Audio Video Variety of quality can complicate media imports Lync turns camera to active microphone Screen Content Instant Messages Instructor needs to ask audience to mute mic Lync video file requires some post-production Combinations of the above Takes time to process after meeting is done MP4 or WMV output
5 Feedback from the campus Feedback from the campus On-campus students not as happy with distance teaching format as the online students. Students prefer to have a teacher in person. Distance students enjoyed having real-time interactions with the instructor. 25 of 30 respondents reported watching lectures asynchronously. Overwhelming support from both campus and distance students for on-demand viewing of class material. Many on-campus students transferred to distance sections once they realized they could avoid a 9am class. Will be addressed by enrollment policy for future semesters Texas Tech University From here, it s possible. Special Thanks to Dr. Don Farris, the Texas Tech Office of the CIO, and all of the Faculty and Staff at Texas Tech 27 5
