2 A Quick History of Online Education in SUNY Starting in 1992, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation funded 346 projects totaling $72 million, most of which were made to non-profit colleges universities. Major distance adult providers such as the University of Maryl University College the Penn State World Campus were early grantees. Following on the heels of these institutions, large mainstream public university systems such as the University of Illinois, the State University of New York the University of Central Florida developed substantial online programs. Source: SUNY s Online Environment Provides options for students 12,000 online sections / academic year Facilitates transfer completion of general education 3,800 Gen Ed course sections (guaranteed transfer) Approximately 3,400 course sections of Foundation Courses in the Major (guaranteed to transfer)

3 SUNY s Online Environment s in online course sections* Academic Year ,799 enrollments in sections 86,487 unique students Fall ,886 students took 80% or more of their instruction online This places us in the top 20 in the country by stards cited in EduVentures Online Market Report *Report incomplete - excludes several high-volume providers Disruptive Forces Changing Higher Ed. President Barack Obama s College Completion Goal, asking the U.S. to graduate an additional 10 million students by 2020 The College Board s challenge to increase by 55 percent the number of Americans with a college degree The National Governors Association s Complete to Compete agenda Lumina s 2025 Goal to see 60 percent of all Americans earn a degree

4 Enter the Power of SUNY As part of the Getting Down to Business Phase of the Strategic Plan, Chancellor Zimpher called for an expansion of SUNY s online environment to facilitate student success An Online Education Advisory Group worked through 2012 to create a clear vision for SUNY s new online environment The group framed its work around a proposal created by Empire State College will leverage Existing campus online programs courses Existing campus staff expertise in online teaching Empire State College s expertise in prior assessment Open Education

5 will leverage SUNY s mobility policies procedures for guaranteed transfer of approved General Education Courses Foundation Courses in the majors SUNY s University-wide programs ing enterprise academic technologies services The Power of SUNY 2013 State of the University Address, Chancellor Nancy Zimpher We believe SUNY has a national roadmap for education we are committed to using it. Chancellor Zimpher announced the creation of, an expansion of SUNY s online environment to facilitate student success.
