Individual Service Design
A Thought... Think about your last big purchase... What led you to make the decision you made about what you bought?
The Future Funders What these people want, will determine your core business
Living with 2 realities Commissioned services and support SDS Individualised funding
Economic crisis = public sector cuts We have to work hard at using all existing resources, to meet peoples outcomes locally.
How do we develop support around people to be active citizens?
Having choice and control over your own life is a human right, not a public sector luxury. We can all play a part in creating solutions that work for people and families.

Bricks and mortar and lots of staff does not necessarily create a good lifestyle, how we direct and mould that support around the person does
Creative approaches require the confidence to lack certainty
People living out of area People living in specialist services away from their home Usually expensive last resorts Inappropriate placing people Lack of local services / support that works Service models that don t suit this person Building of enormous negative reputations High Costs? Outcomes
Creating Individual Service Funds Block Contract 5 Services - 17 people, What support do we provide now hours / overall contract What level of support needs does the person have SAQ = IB In carving up the contract how much would this equate to? How would the person prefer to be supported? ISD Is this possible within the existing budgets?
Individual Service Design Process Who is the person? Life Now A good lifestyle People to share My community, my place Understanding my support Healthy and Safe Design ideas and outcomes A typical week Evaluate the options Cost Action Plan
Who is the person?
Understanding life now? What is life like now? Hearing what's important, but also what may need to change Happiness?
A good lifestyle What would the persons life be like that would help them feel fulfilled and valued an equal citizen? What are the really important things in the person s life i.e. people, places, things to do. Headlines - create a picture of a good lifestyle
People to share with Reflecting back on who the person is and who the important people are in the person s life what is it about these people they like? In exploring a good life, what does this Tell us about the king of person who would like a similar kind of lifestyle?

My Community. Work hard at helping people see, explore and understand community connections - community mapping Me My potential Gifts, interests, future headlines Places, people possibility in community what are we looking for Where do we know fits this picture?
My Place. Developing a housing specification
What is good Support for me Exploring good support breaking it down to understand just enough support Clinical supports Transitional support Choosing the right supporters Designing your advert
Things I do on my own Things I need to call on for support Need guidance with Times when I need practical and physical assistance Approaches to supporting the person
Choosing the right supporter Personality Interests Knowledge Skills Design the advert
Healthy and Safe Anything that we need to think about that may affect how the person is supported?
My design includes... List of things What would it achieve for me Outcomes
A typical week The nuts and bolts help see how will live a typical week What support, paid and unpaid is required? Generate hours of support
Evaluate the Options (if you need to)

Action Plan
Creative approaches require the confidence to lack certainty
Outcomes Extreme Sports some people s lives are boring! Time alone lots of people way over supported Jobs / roles - animals, older people, kids, recycling business Season tickets, rugby / ordinary places, music venues Fishing clubs, Gym membership Alternative housing mutual support Community Network - shared support Changing rotas personalising how we contract Supporters Individual hours you direct how to use them Assistive Technology AND time to learn how to use it Overnight Support delivered across Providers Sharing support with other people Family members recruited as paid Supporters
Question... All over, rules, process, mechanisms, policies Some people are a great resource to people achieving outcomes - regardless of position Some people can navigate through rules, policies and procedures, make the best use of funding, promote dignity, see possibility, promote citizenship and help create real outcomes for people No exception there are always people who do this HOW COME?
You are an incredible resource! If you are present If you are guided by values that see that there is more to life than services If you work hard to listen deeply If you ask good helpful questions If you can gently support people to explore person centred solutions (ordinary life) If you focus on the possible and action If you are aware of your own impact Not because of your job role, your organisations Its you!
