1 Small Engine Repair Mr. Monaco Text: Small Gasoline Engines, Alfred C. Roth Small engine repair is a class where the student will learn the workings of a small, air cooled, gasoline engine. Each student will have the opportunity to rebuild an engine and learn about each system in a four stroke gasoline engine. Students do need to provide an engine, but if you cannot locate one please see Mr. Monaco and he can help you find one. We will not be working on motorcycle or dirt bike engines, because those are not considered small gasoline engines, regardless of their size. Those engines require a different skill set and many times different tools than what will be taught in this class. We also will not be working on any two stroke engines (the type where you mix the gasoline and oil). Many small two stroke engines are impossible to purchase rebuild parts for and because they are not four stroke they are outside of the scope of the class. Small gasoline four stroke engine repair is a gateway to learning how to repair every other type of engine regardless of size. Many trade schools, colleges, and Universities require the rebuilding of a small engine before you can move on to more advanced engine classes. Learning small engine repair can be valuable. Being a small engine mechanic can be a career in and of itself as well as leading to careers in engine service on all levels. If you can t fix your lawn mower how can you expect to fix more complex engine in a car, airplane, of locomotive. Students will be learning the theory of the engine in the classroom through lecture and with a textbook. Students will be working in the shop with a variety of tools and equipment. Due expect to get dirty. Working on small engines is a dirty job; many times it is dirtier than working on cars and trucks. There are lockers in the shop, if you want to store some work clothes in them, but you need to bring your own lock. If students find they need to replace parts on their engine they are responsible for buying the parts. I can have many parts delivered right to the school through Trenton Auto Value and all the student needs to do is give the delivery driver the cash or check. Students will be graded on their work in the shop and classroom activities. Students who get their engines running should expect a good grade. In the time

2 allotted many students have the time to rebuild two or more engines. To ensure success engines that are repairable are a must. Manufacturers like Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Tecumseh, and Honda all have good parts availability so locating repair parts is easy, usually only a phone call away. Some of the Chinese imports have limited or no parts availability. Some other older engines, such as Fairbanks- Morse, Clinton and Wisconsin can be difficult to get parts for. If you have one of those engines please see your teacher before you bring it in. Students will be expected to: -Successfully disassemble and reassemble there small four stroke gasoline engine. -Engage in the activities of cylinder honing, valve grinding, cleaning parts, etc. -Clean up after themselves and to keep track of their engine and parts -Students need to provide a box to store their engine. -Return the tools and equipment to their proper place. -Students must adhere to the behavior expectations found in their student handbook -Follow all safety procedures posted on the wall of the shop and classroom Attendance guidelines are the same as any other class here at Trenton High School as is the grading scale. YOU DO NOT GET TO PARK IN THE AUTO SHOP PARKING LOT. If you have to park there to load and unload engines please see your teacher. Course Policies & Expectations Late Work(work turned in after determined/assigned due date): Tests/Quizzes must be taken day they are assigned, unless the student has an excused absence. Assignments that are turned in after the due date set by instructor

3 o 5% from grade received will be deducted for each day late, for up to 5 days late o Assignment turned in after 5 days will be evaluated by instructor, but the student will receive no more than 50% for their grade on the assignment. After 7 days the student will receive a zero. Make-up: Students will be allowed to make up all possible work. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain missed assignments. It is possible that certain kinds of school work such as labs or skill-practice sessions cannot be made up and, as a result, may negatively impact a student s grade. In regards to making up work when student is absent, we will not differentiate between excused versus unexcused. All students will have the opportunity to make up missed work (see previous note) Missed Assignments: o Work assigned prior to an absence (including long-term/major projects/papers) Work is due upon return from absence (Ex. A painting is due in Art class on Monday when the student is absent. The student returns to school on Tuesday. The assignment must be turned in on Tuesday) o Work assigned on date of an absence - One day grace period for each day missed (Ex. If student is absent on Monday, make-up work is provided on Tuesday, and would be due on Wednesday) Missed Tests/Quizzes: o Test missed on date of absence - If student has prior knowledge of test date and has had the opportunity to take part in review session, student is expected to take test day of return o Note: Alternate test may be given, if the student is absent the day of the test. CTSO or Community Service Expectations: Students can participate in the Automotive Technology Club. The club puts on various community events, such as car check-up clinics. See Mr. Monaco if you are interested in joining. Class Dress Code: No open toed shoes Safety glasses worn when working in the shop No loose fitting clothing Long hair tied back

4 Trenton High School Dress code, as described in the Trenton High School Student handbook Other Policies 1.) The Autoshop parking lot is off limits for student parking except for those students who have permission to park there when working on their vehicles or picking up/dropping off projects. 2.) Safety Glasses are to be worn at all times when working in the shop, during specified classroom sessions and whenever the instructor deems safety glasses appropriate. 3.) All Trenton High School rules and policies are in affect ANYWHERE on school property. 4.) Appropriate shop attire is required; closed toed shoes, hair tied back. Clothing will get dirty. 5.) All liquid spills will be cleaned up right away. 6.) No equipment will be operated in a way that is dangerous or in a reckless fashion. Do not remove safety guards from equipment and never operate a piece of equipment if you have not had training on the safe operation of said equipment. 7.) Compressed air will not be directed at oneself or at others. 8.) All vehicle fluids will be recycled or disposed of in a proper manner; do not pour fluids down the drains. 9.) Tools will be used safely and for the job they are designed for. Please return tools to the tool crib clean. Report a damaged tool to the instructor. 10.) Students are required to know the location of the safety equipment in the shop and classroom, including the location of the exits, the fire extinguishers, safety blankets, eye wash station and first aid kit. 11.) Malicious destruction of school or private property will not be tolerated. 12.) NO tobacco use and NO electronic smoking is allowed in the classroom, shop, or anywhere on school property 13.) NO fighting 14.) No derogatory language 15.) Theft will not be tolerated. 16.) Disrespect to the teacher and or other school personnel will not be tolerated, nor will disrespectful acts towards other students.
