3 NJCAA NATIONAL OFFICE 1631 Mesa Ave. Suite B Colorado Springs, CO (719) MARY ELLEN LEICHT NJCAA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR In 2009, Mary Ellen Leicht became the first female chief executive of any national intercollegiate athletic organization in the United States when she was named Executive Director of the NJCAA. Leicht has been a cornerstone of the NJCAA since joining the organization in 1989 as Eligibility Administrator. Championing improvements in equity of sports seasons, scholarships and contests, Leicht has provided the NJCAA with a level playing field for all its member institutions and student-athletes. Leicht continues to utilize a proactive approach that has maintained the NJCAA s status as the undisputed leader of two-year collegiate athletics. 4 NJCAA 75TH ANNIVERSARY In May of 1938, representa ves from area ins tu ons of higher learning gathered in Fresno, Calif., to form a unique collegiate athle c organiza on dedicated to America s community and junior colleges. The mee ng led to the adop on of a cons tu on and representa ves in a endance formally announced the new organiza on as the Na onal Junior College Athle c Associa on (NJCAA). Seventy five years a er its inaugural season ( ), the NJCAA is now the second largest na onal intercollegiate athle c governing body in the United States with over 500 member colleges in 43 states. Recognized as the leader in two year collegiate athle cs, the NJCAA champions both athle c and academic opportuni es for student athletes in concert with its member colleges. To commemorate its 75th Anniversary, the NJCAA will launch a year long campaign to celebrate the milestones, student athletes, coaches, and administrators that have helped shape the organiza on and advance two year collegiate athle cs over the past eight decades. Throughout the academic year, the NJCAA will celebrate its 75th Anniversary through various outlets, including a special sec on of the NJCAA website: NJCAA.org/75. Tradi onal press releases will be distributed to member colleges as well as regional and na onal media during the sports season and special 75th Anniversary content will be produced for the organiza on s monthly publica on NJCAA Review. NJCAA TV, powered by ihigh.com, as well as Facebook and Twi er will be used to help keep member colleges, fans and followers informed on the latest 75th Anniversary news and announcements. 38 YEARS OF NJCAA WOMEN S BASKETBALL In 1975, the NJCAA s inaugural Na onal Women s Basketball Invita onal Tournament became the first collegiate basketball championship held for women by a co ed collegiate organiza on. Just one year later, the tournament evolved into a na onal championship as the number of women s basketball programs grew exponen ally across the na on. 6 DI WOMEN S BASKETBALL COMMITTEE The NJCAA Division I Women s Basketball Committee is responsible for setting policies and procedures for the approval by the NJCAA Board of Directors. This committee is made up of NJCAA Region Directors, Assistant Region Directors and the NJCAA Women s Basketball Coaches Association President. Darren Pannier Commi ee Chair State Fair CC, Mo. Member colleges are required to enter weekly sta s cs and game results to the NJCAA stat system. Colleges that fail to do so will be excluded from the poll. Each NJCAA sec onal director will report the top teams in their respec ve regions to the NJCAA na onal office by Monday, 10:00 a.m. (MST). Regions failing to report by that me will not be reflected in the poll. The combined reports will then be sent out to the sec onal directors who will vote for their Top 25 teams.
