Box 328 Forest, Virginia ) President s Corner As I was returning from a study trip in Israel a number of years ago, I noticed that the airline did something interesting for those traveling. As we were flying across the Atlantic, they charted our path on a screen showing us exactly where we had gone, where we were located presently, and where our future path would be to actually get back to the States. Just as that airline charted the flight path of the plane, our desire for IBC s Flight Log is to chart the path of IBC: where we have gone, where we are today, and where we are going in the future. As the third President of IBC, I am excited about the path that God has charted for us. It is because of the faithful service of Dr. Singleton and Dr. Tetreau to lay a solid foundation and a true course that we will be able to move forward to great days ahead. This issue is dedicated to the faithful ministry of Dr. Tetreau as he completes forty years of administration and teaching in the field of education. As a leader in Christian education, Dr. Tetreau has proved himself to be a man of integrity, a man of frugality and industry, a man of humility, a man of sacrifice, and a man of great wisdom. I am thankful to God that I will be able to continue the legacy that Dr. Tetreau has so faithfully established. God has called us to mentor servants for His service, and we covet your prayers as we endeavor to accomplish His calling in our ministry. The year ahead of us is bright as we move forward with God s will for the College. Just as we had our largest graduating class this last year, we are praying that the Lord would give us our largest incoming class for the fall. Pray that the Lord would give us the resources and wisdom to intentionally mentor every student in whom the Lord allows us to invest. 3 Dr. Jerry Charles Tetreau A Portrait of IBC s Second President Jerry Charles Tetreau was born to J. Charles and Dorothy Tetreau in Bad Axe, Michigan on August 1, He attended the local one-room school through the eighth grade and afterward attended and graduated from Bad Axe High School in After working for a year, he joined the U.S. Navy. While in the Navy, he was stationed in four locations: Great Lakes, Illinois; Imperial Beach, California; Adak, Alaska; and Nicosia, Cyprus. While enroute from Imperial Beach to Adak, he met Kit, his wife of fortyseven years; married in 1960, they were able to go to Cyprus together. When he was discharged in 1962, he began his college career as a freshman at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, completing his Bachelor s degree in While working on his Master of Arts degree in Bible, he taught at the Bob Jones Academy. He became the principal of a local Christian school and continued his studies at Clemson University and Maranatha Baptist Bible College, where he received a Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration. In 1973 he was asked to start a Christian school in Memphis, Tennessee. Jerry and his family moved to Tennessee where he helped to organize and then become the administrator of Thrifthaven Baptist Schools. While in Tennessee, he was the vice president of the Tennessee Association of Christian Schools and was responsible for the accrediting of member schools. He also helped to organize the fine arts competition in the mid-south area, which quickly grew to become the national AACS Bible, Academic, and Fine Arts competition. In 1979 he and his family moved to Tempe, Arizona where he became the administrator of Tri-City Christian Academy. Until 2006, he was the executive director of Christian Schools of Arizona, an affiliate of the American Association of Christian Schools. Dr. Jerry Tetreau and Dr. James Singleton in the early days of International Baptist College. In 1980, Jerry accepted the challenge to serve as the working administrator of a to-be-started Bible college, International Baptist College in Tempe. Further studies earned him the Education Specialist Degree from Pensacola Christian College and later the Doctor of Philosophy Degree from California Graduate School of Theology. His dissertation was A Study of the Recruiting Practices of the American Bible College. In 1982, he was honored with the Doctor of Letters degree from the Baptist College and Graduate School of the West, located in San Francisco, California, in recognition of his contributions to private Christian education. While serving at International Baptist College, he has served as the Academic Dean, Vice President, President, and now Chancellor. Dr. Tetreau (affectionately known as Dr. T. ) has served faithfully in the field of education for forty years. Jerry and Kit have two children, Joel and Heather. Joel is married to Toni and they have three boys: Jonathan, 13; Jeremy, 11; and Joshua, 9. Joel is the pastor of Southeast Valley Baptist Church in Gilbert, Arizona. Heather is married to David Smith and they have one son, Sullivan Riley, born January 16, David is the pastor of Western Avenue Baptist Church in Avondale, Arizona. Alumni Spotlight: Michelle Miller Michelle graduated from IBC with an Associate of Arts degree in 2002 and with a Bachelor of Arts in Bible and Christian Service in After graduating from IBC with my Associate s Degree, I worked at Charles Schwab as a Client Service Specialist and was soon promoted to Office Manager. After three years, I began to ask myself, Is this where I want to be in the next three to ten years? The answer was no. So I resigned and started a business with my husband Garland and some other members from my church. This business is called Family Wellness of Arizona. Our goal is to empower people to manage their families in a healthy way by utilizing positive communication skills. Our teaching sessions cover rules which provide a road map for healthy behavior while protecting the family, role plays to dramatize real life issues, and interactive coaching sessions which show families how to function together in a better way. Garland and I have been doing this now for over four years and we find this a very rewarding experience. We are often able to share the gospel with people who are hurting and also invite them to church. I went back to IBC to get my Bachelor s degree in Church Education and Business. Upon graduation I felt the Lord leading me back into the field of medicine, this time as a Naturopathic Physician. Now, I am back in school working towards my PhD. Garland, also a graduate of IBC, is on full-time staff at Southeast Valley Baptist Church. While his official position is Pastor of Worship, he also oversees the various media ministries, visitation, and counseling. He often jokes about the 101 things they didn t tell me about being a music minister. He has been ministering now at SVBC for a little over six years. We love our church home and find many opportunities to minister to the church family in a variety of ways. Summer 2007 IBC Arrows Flight Log 3

4 Learning to Trust God By Dr. Keith E. Gephart Life can be tough: health Issues, family conflicts and chaos, marital problems and breakups, job layoffs, business failures, death of loved ones, loneliness, injustices, problems with close personal friends or family members, academic failures, career failures, unsaved loved ones, spiritual failures, persecution for doing right and for our faith. Even life s little frustrations can become burdensome to the believer, especially when compounded by multiplication. These little things can drive us to our wit s end. When added to other serious life issues, little problems can become the proverbial straw that breaks the camel s back. Such a thought is expressed in a devotional book for high school students entitled, If God Loves Me, Why Can t I Get My Locker Open? We ought not be surprised that life presents us with so many challenges, for we live in a messed up world (Rom. 8:20-22). Paul states that the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. The vanity experienced in this world is due to the Fall of Adam described in Genesis 3. Sin introduced all kinds of complications and pain into a previously perfect world. However, more than the world was ruined by the Fall; humans were also ruined and their nature became sinfully depraved. As the result, even believers like Paul recognize that they are carnal, sold under sin (Rom. 7:14). Paul describes his struggle with sinful acts of omission and commission in Romans 7: He often did what he did not plan and left undone what he did plan. What believer has not shared Paul s frustration? In addition, believers must deal with opposition from the unsaved world. The New Testament makes clear that the world hated Jesus and that it would likewise hate His followers (John. 17:14-18; 15:18-19; Mt. 24:9). Should we be surprised when we face opposition, misunderstanding, and false accusations from the unsaved world? Paul shows us in II Tim. 3:1-5 that the wickedness of the world would get worse as we approach the end of the age. Certainly, nothing has happened in the past two thousand years to bring doubt upon the accuracy of Paul s statements. Believers might be tempted to ask: Is God really in control? Does He really know what is going on? Does He really care about me? Is the promise of Psalm 32:10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about really true? We ought not be surprised that life presents us with so many challenges, for we live in a messed up world. Even Biblical characters struggled with life s sorrows and troubles. The apostle Paul asked the Lord three times to remove the thorn in the flesh from him (II Cor. 12:7-10). Joseph asked for help getting out of prison, for he knew that he was there due to injustices in his life (Gen. 40:14-15). Hebrews 12 reminds us that the chastening experienced by believers is never pleasant or joyous, but rather grievous (12:11). Let us examine briefly the experience of a godly believer who went through horrific suffering that totally baffled him. This person is Job. We are very familiar with the opening of the book, God s allowing Satan to remove everything from him that was dear including his children and finally his health. Job sat on the garbage heap scraping the ooze from his sores because he was such a loathsome mess that he dare not go within the inhabited areas (2:7-8). Even his three friends, when they saw him, were speechless for seven days (2:12-13). We know how he still gave glory to God through it all, saying: Naked came I out of my mother s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD (1:21). He also said to his wife, What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? (2:10). The text reminds us that in all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly (1:22), and in all this did not Job sin with his lips (2:10). But we must hear the rest of the story. When Job finally opened his mouth, what came out was not pretty, nor sinless! He did begin to charge God foolishly. Later, once the Lord spoke to him and rebuked him, Job needed to abhor himself and repent in dust and ashes (42:6). Job cursed the day he was born and wished he had never been born, or had died at birth, or would have been aborted (3:1-12, 16). Now he just wanted to die (3:21-22). He said that his grief was so heavy that it was like the weight of the world upon him: Oh that my grief were thoroughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together! For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up (6:2-3). Job realized that the Lord is omniscient; however, Job believed that God in His omniscience had over-scrutinized Job s life and had made him perfectly miserable He had paid too much attention to Job, and Job wished that God would just leave him alone (7:17-18)! Notice the reversal of the thought IBC Arrows Flight Log Summer 2007

5 found in Psalm 8:4 What is man that thou art mindful of him, and the son of man that thou visitest him? Job was not awed that God would pay him any attention; he was wearied with the Lord s constant attention. In 7:19 Job complained that God kept at him until he swallowed his own spittle: How long wilt thou not depart from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? (7:20). He had become God s target. Job also acknowledged God s sovereignty; but Job maintained that God in His sovereignty had become a bully to him, and that he could do nothing about it! (9:3-16). God was so powerful, what could Job do about it? God beat him up mercilessly so that Job could not catch his breath: For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause. He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness (9:17-18). God was the Strong One (9:19). What could Job do? Though he was innocent, God would not leave him alone: Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life. This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked (9:21-22). Job had no refuge no one to whom he could turn (9:32-33). Job did not understand what God was doing (10:2-7). He was thoroughly confused. Job challenged God to a trial he wanted to sue the Lord. Let Job plead his case before the Lord and let the Lord answer Job and justify His actions toward Job. Note the following verses: Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God. But I will maintain mine own ways before him. Hear diligently my speech, and my declaration with your ears. Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified. Oh that one might plead for a man with God as a man pleadeth for his neighbour! (13:3, 15b, 17-18; 16:21) Yet, in his challenge of God s ways, Job never lost sight of his relationship with God, and he ended up trusting God through it all. For generations, believers have marveled at Job s confessions: Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him. He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him (13:15-16); Oh that my words were now written! Oh that they were printed in a book! That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever! For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: Whom I shall see Yet, in his challenge of God s ways, Job never lost sight of his relationship with God, and he ended up trusting God through it all. for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me (19:23-27). This was an amazing statement of faith by Job. What an example to us! Were ever such words spoken before or since? When we consider all that Job had been through, we marvel at his solid confidence in his God. There may be times when we will struggle in our faith and not understand our God. God actually encourages us to bring our struggles to Him as did Job. Of course, we ought to guard our words that we might not become guilty of sinning with our lips. Remember that God Summer Course Schedule did vindicate Job in the end after He straightened him out (chapters 38-42). We must learn to trust God through all of life s challenges. Jerry Bridges in his book Trusting God, shows us that there are three truths that we must believe if we are to trust Him in adversity (p. 18): God is completely sovereign (Lam. 3:37-38; Mt. 26:39); God is infinite in wisdom (Rom. 11:33); God is perfect in love (Is. 37:18). Psalm 9:10 says, And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee, for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee. As Bridges says, To know God s name is to know Him in an intimate personal way. It is more than just knowing facts about God. It is coming into a deeper personal relationship with Him as a result of seeking Him in the midst of our personal pain and discovering Him to be trustworthy. It is only as we know God in this personal way that we come to trust Him (p. 20). Dr. Gephart has been teaching at IBC for nine years and is the Director of Student Life. 6 Fine Arts Concert - May 11 The IBC Choir and faculty presented God s Word Preserved, a program telling the stories of Bible translators through the ages. Scenes from the lives of Martin Luther, William Carey, Adoniram Judson, and others were presented dramatically with poignant music between the vignettes. Preaching Event Finals - April 25 IBC s Annual Preaching Event gives students valuable preaching experience. This year s finalists were Stephen Konves and Randy Hernandez (right). As the winner, Randy Hernandez had the honor of preaching at the evening service of Tri-City Baptist Church on April 29. Junior/Senior Day - March This year s IBC Junior/Senior Day theme, A Solid Foundation, capitalized on the idea of building lives on Jesus Christ. We emphasized how IBC can help students build a life for the Lord by 1) helping build a solid foundation within our students; 2) providing a blueprint for mentoring into ministry; 3) providing the tools of academic excellence; 4) providing the financial materials and resources necessary to produce a remarkable finished structure. Senior Recital April 12 IBC senior Rebekah High treated friends and family to 50 minutes of Mozart, Chopin and Chauminade. Rebekah is a student of Tiffany Brock. Grand Canyon Hike - April A group of twenty, including veteran hikers, current students, prospective students and friends, hiked the Grand Canyon this year with Dr. Tetreau. Dr. J. Gresham Machen said, God has spoken through two books: the book of His works and the book of His words. To hike the Grand Canyon is to be exposed to some wonderful pages from the book of God s works. Faculty Recital - April 19 The acoustics and intimacy of the chapel in which it was performed, the incredible variety in the program and the eagerness of the audience made the IBC Music Faculty Recital the surprise hit program of the year. 6 IBC Arrows Flight Log Summer 2007

7 2007 IBC Graduates Associate of Arts Carri Biller Chris Carter Chase Miller IBC s 24 th Annual Commencement May 12, 2007 was an historical day in the life of International Baptist College. The Tri-City Baptist Church auditorium was filled with those who came to witness the passing of the leadership of the College to the next generation as Dr. Jerry Tetreau became the first Chancellor, and Pastor David Brock was inaugurated as the third President. Nineteen students received degrees the largest number to march since the inception of the College. Of special note was Pastor Gheorghe Motoc-Fofiu, a native Romanian who formerly pastored a church of about 600 people in his homeland. His earning the D.Min. degree was the culmination of ten years work. The twenty-fourth commencement was one of mixed emotions for students leaving their alma mater and moving on, and for Dr. Jerry Tetreau and Pastor David Brock as their roles in ministry would take significant turns. Since the founding of IBC twenty-six years ago, Dr. Tetreau has been the guiding force in the operation of the College. Over the last two years, he has done a lot of traveling in order to help broaden the base of friends who will share in the burden of IBC to mentor God-fearing Christian leaders. As Chancellor, he will look to the Lord to expand these opportunities and to minister the Word wherever the doors may open. Of course, he is assisting in the time of transition of leadership and will continue to give input to the College as needed. Pastor Brock is stepping up from the duties as College Pastor of Tri-City Baptist Church to shoulder the work of College President. He has been working diligently on his D.Min. degree and has completed all his classes and part of his dissertation. He comes to the helm of IBC with a vision to build upon what Dr. Tetreau has already done and to diligently seek God s leading in continuing to develop graduates and Christian leaders who glorify God and demonstrate their love for God as they serve Him in their families, local churches, the West, and the world. Dr. David Shumate, General Director of Mission Gospel Ministries, International spoke of the need for integrity as he delivered the commencement address. A good friend of Dr. Tetreau, Dr. Steve Townsend who pastors a church in Clayton, Georgia, gave a testimony concerning Dr. Tetreau. Dr. Mike Sproul, Chairman of the Governing Board, and his wife Elma presented Mrs. Kit Tetreau with a custom made gold pendant of the College logo on a gold chain. Dr. Sproul then unveiled a display case exhibiting a 1937 collector Model B John Deere tractor. A plate on the case reads Dr. Jerry C. Tetreau 40 years sowing and reaping in the field of Christian Education Symbolizing the transfer of leadership, Dr. Sproul and Dr. Tetreau placed a doctoral robe and tam on Pastor Brock in place of his Master s robe and mortarboard. Pastor Brock s father, Dr. Walter Brock, Executive Director of Ironwood, a Christian camp in California, gave the charge to the new President. Pastor Brock responded by giving a brief vision of what he foresees for the College, and then his uncle, Dr. John Brock, Vice President of Academic Affairs at Maranatha Baptist Bible College in Wisconsin, offered a prayer of dedication. Students reaching pinnacles in their education, leaders moving into new and differing roles, families and friends rejoicing, congratulations extended and a few tears shed: how quickly the time passed, but how momentous the events!
