Please make sure that your spam filter does not block Please make sure that your spam filter does not block delivery of the key. Q3. Running Recover My Files on Windows Vista Ans.: On Windows Vista, Recover My Files must be run as an Administrator to allow it to scan your drives. You will receive a message window if you try to run Recover My Files without admin rights - "You must re-run the program with Administrator rights. This is done by right-mouse clicking the program icon and selecting "Run as Administrator". After clicking OK on the message window, to correctly run Recover My Files on Windows Vista you must do the following: 1. Right-click on the Recover My Files program icon 2. Click on "Run as administrator" 3. If you are not logged in as a user with admin rights you will be prompted to enter the password for the admin account on the computer. Recover My Files should now successfully run. Q4. Saving Results to a Network Path on Windows Vista Ans.: Recover My Files cannot save search results to a network path without a drive being mapped to the path. If you are running Windows Vista and you will be saving the search results to a network drive, you must ensure that the network drive is mapped prior to opening the program. If you open the program and run the search prior to mapping the network drive, you will not be able to see the mapped network drive in your drive list and therefore won't be able to save the search results to the desired network path. To map a network drive in Windows Vista: 1. Click the Windows button in the lower left corner and then click on Computer

2. Click on "Map network drive" on the toolbar, or click on the Tools menu and select "Map Network Drive" (if you cannot see the Tools menu press the ALT key on your keyboard to show the menus) 3. In the Drive list, select an available drive letter to assign to the mapped drive 4. In the Folder box type the network path if known, or click on Browse and locate the folder 5. If you want the drive to map every time you log on to your computer, select the "Reconnect at logon" check box 6. Click Finish Your network drive should now be visible in Computer (known as My Computer in previous versions of Windows), and after opening Recover My Files and running your search you will be able to save the results to the network drive. Q5. Recovering from a drive formatted with Windows Vista Ans.: If you are running Windows Vista and initiate a full format of your drive (i.e. not a "Quick Format"), NO data recovery software will be able to recover your files. We recommend that if you are going to format a drive using Windows Vista, that you select a "Quick Format". Your drive will be formatted, but you will be able to use Recover My Files. Please note that if you have done a full format of your drive using other versions of Windows, e.g Windows XP, you can still recover your data. Q6. My file type is not listed in Recover My Files Ans.: Recover My Files can find all file types, not just the file types for which specific support has been implemented. 1) If you are recovering a formatted or problem disk: At the end of the search the results screen will change to "Folder View". Search through Folder View to find your file. You can click on the column headings in the results screen to sort by Type, or you can use the Filter button. 2) If you are searching for a deleted file: Run a "Fast File Search" and look in the "Other Files" folder of the results screen. Any recovered file type which is not specifically supported will be placed in this folder. If you still cannot locate your file: If you still cannot locate the file that you are seeking it may be possible to add specific support for the FilePopupInit('a2'); //--> file type. Call our Customer Service Centre with the following details 1) Three sample files of different size and content; 2) Information about the program that was used to create these files, including full name and version number; 3) Any further information known about this file type, such as the author and relevant web site.

Once we receive the sample files we will view their internal file structure to determine if it is possible to add specific support for the file type, and if so, how long it will take to be included in Recover My Files. Q7. Can I run Recover My Files from CD? Ans.: Yes, You can Recover My Files directly from a CD. This is NOT a boot CD. Recover My Files needs Windows to run. Create a Basic Recover My Files CD or USB using another computer: 1) Download the latest version of Recover My Files from the website and install in on another computer. 2) Copy the files located in the folder "C:\Program Files\Recover My Files\" to a CD or USB drive. Take the CD or USB drive to the problem computer and run the file "RecoverMyFiles.exe from the CD or USB Q8. How do I install Recover My Files? Ans.: Recover My Files can be downloaded from our website. The installation file downloaded from the Internet is called "RecoverMyFiles-Setup.exe". Run this program and follow the installation wizard. Q9. What is the Fast File Search? Ans.: 'Fast File Search' 1) Best Used When Files have been recently deleted and emptied from the Windows Recycle Bin. 2) What it does Searches the Windows Operating System Master File Table (MFT) for deleted files. 3) Special Instruction Click 'Fast File Search'. Search the drive letter where possible. Search for any number of file types. 4) Search Duration For a 100gb drive this search should take between 0 and 2 hours to run. 5) Expected Search Results A Fast File Search will find all file types (not just the file types selected). File types not specifically supported will be placed in the "other deleted files" folder in the "File View" area of the results screen. A Fast File Search will find full file and folder names of deleted files and folders. You must switch to "Folder View" in the results screen to see this information. Q10. What is a Complete File Search? Ans.: 'Complete File Search'

Best Used When You did not find your deleted files with a "Fast File Search". It is a longer search but will potentially find more files. What it does 1) Searches the Windows Operating System Master File Table (MFT) for deleted files. 2) Scans the entire hard drive to find deleted files by their structure, eg. header and footer. Special Instructions The more file types that are selected, the longer the search will take. We suggest you run a separate search for music and video files (eg. MP3 and MOV) as these are the most resource intensive files to find. Search Duration For a 100gb drive this search should take between 0 and 15 hours to run (depending on the number and type of files selected, the size of the drive and the speed of the computer). Expected Search Results A Complete File Search will find: All file types (not just the file types selected). File types not specifically supported will be placed in the "other deleted files" folder in the "File View" area of the results screen. Full file and folder names of deleted files and folders. You must switch to "Folder View" in the results screen to see this information. Files for which a Windows Operating System record (MFT record) no longer exists. These files are named "Recovered_FileType_x" (the original name can no longer be recovered). Q11. What is the Fast Format Recover? Ans.: 'Fast Format Recover' 1) Best Used When The drive no longer has a drive letter or is marked as RAW. 2) What it does The Fast Format Recover searches to see if it can find the lost partitions on the drive. It then rebuilds the partitions. 3) Special Instructions If your drive does not display a drive letter, search the "physical drive". 4) Search Duration A Fast Format Recover should take less than 15 minutes. 5) Expected Search Results A Fast Format Recover will find all file types. File types not specifically supported will be placed in the "other deleted files" folder in the "File View" area of the results screen. A Fast Format Recover will find full file and folder names. You must switch to "Folder View" in the results screen to see this information.

Q12. What is the Complete Format Recover? Ans.: 'Complete Format Recover' Best Used When Use a "Complete Format Recover" when "Fast Format Recover" did not find your files. A "Complete Format Recover" is best suited to the following situations: 1) You have lost your original drive letter, have created a new one and formatted it 2) You have lost your original drive letter, have created a new one, formatted the new drive and reloaded Windows. What it does The "Complete Format Recover" searches the drive to find individual Windows Operating System records (MFT records) that identify the location of the lost files. It uses the user selected file types to narrow down on the location of the MFT records. Special Instructions In the file selection window, only search for the default selected file types. Only add other file types if you did not have any of the default selected file types on your drive prior to the data loss. If you know whether the drive you are searching was FAT or NTFS you can speed up the search by clicking the OPTIONS button on the main program screen and in the SEARCH tab under "Format Recovery" select FAT or NTFS as appropriate. Search Duration For a 100gb drive this search should take between 0 and 15 hours to run if only the default selected file types were used in the search. Expected Search Results A Complete Format Recover will find: 1) All file types (not just the file types selected). File types not specifically supported will be placed in the "other deleted files" folder in the "File View" area of the results screen. 2) Full file and folder names of deleted files and folders. You must switch to "Folder View" in the results screen to see this information. Q13. Where can I save recovered files? Ans.: Files must be saved to another drive. It is not possible to save files to the drive from which they are being recovered. You can save files to another partition on your drive (e.g.: Drive "D:\"), another physical hard drive, a floppy disk, USB, ZIP disk, or a network drive. Files can also be saved directly to a writable CD or DVD (this feature is accessed by clicking on the drop down arrow next to the "Save Files" button). Q14. Setting Recover My Files Options & Preferences Ans.: Recover My Files options (or program preferences) can be set by clicking either the "Manually Set Options" button on the first wizard window, or by clicking on the OPTIONS button on the main program screen. Program options are arranged under the following categories:

File Types Tab Search speed will decrease in proportion to the number of File Types which are selected; if you are certain of which File Type you are searching for, then only select that File Type. If you are unsure which type of file has been lost, then select more options. Selecting File Types when performing a "Format Recover" on a previously formatted NTFS partition can be critical. For best results select a small number of file types that previously existed on the partition. Recover My Files uses the files types selected to "sync" any lost partitions found. Note that selections can be made even while the search is being executed. General Tab The "General" tab contains options such as whether the Recover My Files "Wizard" or "Tips on Startup" dialogue boxes appear when the program is opened. The "Wizard" screens are detailed in the "Steps to File Recovery" section and provide the simplest way of launching the program. Allow searching of Physical Drives. If this is selected then you will also have the option to select a "Physical Drive" in addition to the "Logical Drives" at the start of a Fast or Complete Search. Use this setting when your drive is no longer able to be seen in My Computer. "Event Logging" can be set to 3 levels; None, Normal and Debug. The Event Log is displayed under a tab in the Preview Window. It contains detailed information about the activity of the program and can assist in troubleshooting the File Recovery process. If the box "Show Properties box in Preview Panel" is checked the Lower Left-side Preview Pane will be visible. If the box "Show unknown types in Hex view" is checked then file types that have not been selected or are not recognized by Recover My Files will be displayed in raw hexadecimal format. If the box "Save with folder information if known" is checked the Save Files function will restore the files to the folders from which they were originally deleted. If the box "Retain original file date/times if known" is checked the Save Files function will restore the original File Creation and File Modified dates and times. If the box "Rename filename to found extension" is checked the Save Files function will rename files using the extension of the file type that the file was identified as. For example, if a file named "~WRD0001.TMP" is recovered and identified as a Word document then it will be renamed to "~WRD0001-TMP.doc". Search Tab The "Search" tab controls how Recover My Files will search for your Deleted and Lost Files Deleted Files In this section you can select whether you want to search for Deleted Files by clicking the "Search for Deleted Files" box. Also you can select whether you want Recover My Files to try and determine the type of Deleted File by clicking the "Try and determine file type of Deleted Files" Our Recommendation: Keep both these options on. Lost Files

In this section you can select whether you want to search for "Lost Files" by clicking the "Search for Lost Files" box. Also you can select whether you want Recover My Files to try and determine the file size of the Lost Files by clicking the "Try and determine file size of Lost Files" When Recover My Files finds a "Lost File" the program: determines the type of file that it has found (e.g. is it a MS Word document or a JPEG etc); and then determines the size or length of the file (e.g. is it 1 megabyte or 5 megabytes). When the "Go to end of file when file found" option is selected: Recover My Files stops processing the file that it has located, moves to the end of the file, and continues the search from this point. It will continue this process until it reaches the end of the disk space and the search is complete. Advantages: The speed of the search is increased because the contents of identified file types are not searched. Disadvantages: If corruption of a deleted file has occurred the reported files size may be inaccurate and may cause the program to skip an otherwise recoverable file. When the "Go to end of file when file found" option is NOT selected: Recover My Files locates a lost file, calculates its type and size, but continues to search through the files contents looking for other embedded files. Using this method you ensure that other files are not missed due to the skipping process. Advantages: This method may recover additional files from your computer. Disadvantages: It will increase the time that it takes for the search to complete. Our Recommendation: In some cases files could be missed due to the reporting of an incorrect file size. We recommend the "Go to end of file when file found" is left not selected so that no recoverable information is overlooked. Format Recovery Allows you to set the maximum number of partitions to recover. We recommend you leave this setting at 4 unless you know that more than 4 partitions existed on a formatted drive. The "Intensive Partition Search Setting" will determine the aggressiveness of matching partitions to lost files found. We do not recommend that you change this setting. Advanced Tab Search Active and Non-Active Areas: If this is selected Recover My Files will search the entire drive, sector by sector or cluster by cluster. This should only be used if you have accidentally deleted your entire drive, re-partitioned your drive, or re-formatted your drive. Allow searching of Physical Drives: If this is selected then you will also have the option to select a "Physical Drive" in addition to the "Logical Drives" at the start of a Fast or Complete Search. Use this setting when your drive is no longer able to be recognized by Windows as a drive letter. This setting will not affect the ability to select physical drives when performing a Format Recover. Prompt for Start Cluster/Sector: You can use this option to start the search of your disk drive at a specific sector or cluster on the drive. You will be prompted at the beginning of the search for the sector or cluster.the Search Level: Cluster or Sector, specifies whether you want Recover My Files to search using sectors or clusters. Cluster searching is faster, as is the Default setting. Use sector searching when you have accidentally formatted, or re-partitioned your drive.

Q15. Recover My Files Minimum System Requirements Ans.: Recover My Files has the following minimum installation requirements: 1) Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista 2) 6 megabytes of disk space 3) 128 (minimum) megabytes of RAM Files can only be saved to an alternate physical drive or directly to a CD or DVD, and cannot be saved onto the same drive from where they are recovered. This can be another partition on your existing hard drive, another hard drive, Iomega Zip, Jazz, Orb, USB 'Pen Drive', LS-120, floppy disk, network drive, server volume, writeable CD or DVD etc.
