March 2012 Winter edition the ARROW News that finds its mark! Sarah Lance and team USA take SILVER! On February 3rd, The Lance Family took off for the bright lights of Las Vegas. A few of the team gathered for unofficial practice the next day until the rest of the team arrived. Page 3 Holly Pizzini wins, The Vegas Shoot! and sets second State Record! Holly takes first place in the Cubs division shooting 20 yards and a 3 spot in competition for the first time! There were 13 female archers shooting that weekend. As we arrived early to settle in for the days shoot we were able to meet the weekends archers. One girl Brooke was almost the same height as Holly and we soon learned she came to shoot! The girls were battling it out and by the end of the first day Miss Holly was ahead by 9 points. Saturday morning we awoke at 5:30am and headed for breakfast. Holly proclaimed, I can t shoot without my orange Juice! Directly after breakfast Holly learned that second and third place got up extra early to practice. We knew Saturday was going to be a battle because all 3 girls could shoot! Continued on page 4. The Vegas Shoot Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 Page 10 Page 11 Who went to Vegas? 3 Lance Brings Home Another Medal with Team USA and Lands Top Five at the World Archery Festival! On the 5th, the whole team went to official practice together and had an all day practice session together to prepare for a strong performance the next day. The 6th was qualification day and Team USA rounded out the tops of their divisions. Sarah started out eighth before the first half and by the end of the day ranked second, only a point down from the first place girl from Denmark. On the 7th the elimination rounds were held and while Sarah still made us all proud, she lost her first match to finish eighth individually. However, all was not lost for Team USA. Christie Colin made it to the bronze medal final for the compound women, as well as Brady Ellison in the recurve men's division. Reo Wilde and Jimmy Butts both made it to the gold medal final for the compound men, Jake Kaminski and Miranda Leek also made it to the gold final in the recurve men and women's division. In the Junior compound divisions, Bridger Deaton and Lexi Keller made the gold medal final and fellow team mate Garret Abernathy made the bronze final. Sarah says that despite her loss and her disappointment, she was still very proud of her team mate Lexi because this was only her second USA Archery related shoot and she made it to the final. The 8th brought on team rounds and every USA team made it to either a bronze or gold final! How impressive is that! Sarah, Lexi, and their team mate Carli Cochran faced Mexico first and won by and whopping 25 points and made it to the gold medal final, which they lost by mere points and took the silver medal. The Junior Men's Compound team of Bridger Deaton, Ben Cleland, and Garret Abernathy won the gold medal. The Junior Recurve Men's team of Daniel and Sean McGlaughlin, and Jeramiah Cusick took the bronze medal and the Junior Recurve Women's Team also took the bronze. The ninth was the finals day and also the practice day for the World Archery Festival. Reo Wilde, Braden Gellentien, and Jimmy Butts won the gold. Erika Anshutz, Christie Colin, and Tristan Skaravan also took the gold for the Compound Men and Women's group. Brady Ellison, Jake Kaminski, and Vic Wunderle took the gold, as well as Brandy Deloche, Miranda Leek, and Jenifer Nichols for the Recurve men and Women. Individually, Team USA also brought home medals. Lexi Keller took the silver, and Bridger Deaton took the gold. Reo Wilde took the gold, leaving Jimmy Butts with the silver and Christie Colin lost her bronze match to finish fourth. Brady Ellison won the bronze, Jake Kaminski took the silver and Miranda Leek also took the silver. All in all it was a good week for Team USA but most weren't finished yet because on deck was the World Archery Festival! Sarah shot a 298 with 23x's the first day to rank 11th. She shot a 299 with 20x's the second day to move up to 7th. On the third and final day Sarah shot a 300 with 24x's to tie for third, leaving her to have to shoot off with Holly Larson! At 4 o'clock, Sarah, Holly, the Senior Men and the Pro Men took the line for the shoot off. Sarah shot a 29 with 2 x's while Holly shot a 30 with 1x the first end, leaving Sarah to finish fourth and Holly to finish third. The Pro Men standing on the line with the girls included, Jesse Broadwater, Levi Morgan, Jeff Hopkins, Reo Wilde, Braden Gellentien and several others. In the end, the men dwindled down to Chance Beaubouff and Jesse Broadwater and after the final arrows, Jesse was the man on top! Holly Pizzini also won her division, making her and Sarah the only two people at Lincoln Bowmen to win the Vegas Shoot and on top of that, THEY'RE BOTH GIRLS! You better start practicing up boys! You can find both Holly and Sarah at the club preparing for NAA Indoor Nationals and NFAA Indoor Nationals. Good luck girls! 3

Continued from page 1. This was going to be a challenge. Holly, Brooke and Lindsay (First, Second and Third place going into the second day.) took to the line for their practice ends and all three shot 10 s and X s. The third scoring end tied Holly and Brooke at 86 with Lindsay further behind. I could hear Brookes father coaching her as I turned to Holly. 9 points ahead! I said. Yuppers! replied Holly. Well, it s yours to loose. What are you going to do Holly? I got this Dad! Holly said, then she turned and gave me the secrete knuckle bump. For the next 6 ends Holly didn t drop a point and finished 20 points ahead of Brooke and 21 ahead of Lindsay finishing day 2 with a score of 296! I seen two gentlemen dressed in their homeland colors from Mexico standing behind us. The coach was pointing at Holly and smiling as he said in a thick accent, A machine! She s a MACHINE! he nodded and walked away. Later I spoke with Dave Lance and asked him if it gets any easier for us dads to sit and watch. Dave replied, I told you, you really need to calm down! You know Dave, if I wasn t able to walk to the bale between ends I d have no way to lower my blood pressure! Holly Pizzini Takes second State Record! The week before Vegas Holly talked me into driving her to Grayling for the Indoor FITA 600 Championship shoot. Holly s excuse for going was she needed a warm up to Vegas. After a long day I m glad I took her. Holly broke another State Record! The old record was set by Gabriella Meyland in 2008 which was 600, 47 X s and 5 I/O s. Holly shot 600, 51 X s and 5 I/O s to take her second State Record since August of Way to go Champette! Above from left to right: Brooke, Holly and Lindsay take the podium! Friends are made: Brooke and Holly congratulate each other! Holly, Leanne and I would like to thank all of our Lincoln Bowmen family and their friends for stopping by and supporting Holly in Grayling and Las Vegas! Thank you! 4

Pizzini ArchersNews@Gmail.com Director: Larry Laboe (734) Presidents corner February was a very active month for Lincoln Bowmen Archers. With the Vegas shoot, the MET shoot and the 3-d shoot taking place within a two and a half week period. Members could choose three different styles to compete in. When I looked over the scores for all three events. I noticed that Lincoln shooters placed 1st in each of these events. Great shooting everyone! One of our most important events will be held on the 24th of this month. The wild game dinner. We still need help with selling raffle tickets and dinner tickets. Please see any director for tickets to buy or sell. As a reminder, if you bring a guest to shoot indoors or outdoors they need to pay. When bringing a guest, you are responsible to see that they follow all of the club rules and pay the shooting fees. Hunter Safety Program Needs Help The Hunter Safety Team needs help. We are looking for someone to help with teaching the class. At this time we have four regular instructors, but we are in need of at least two or three more to help with the class. If we cannot get the extra help, the Hunter Safety Program maybe discontinued. If you are a safety instructor now or would like to become one please contact Larry McNew. 5

Lincoln Bow Raffles with Great Odds!!! Lincoln Bowmen has three incredible bow raffles in the works with winners being drawn Saturday March 24, 2012 at the annual Wild Game Dinner and you do not have to be present to win. Here is what they are! Raffle # 1 An Excalibur crossbow for the 1 st place prize, a dozen Cross Fire crossbow bots for the 2 nd place prize and $100 for the 3 rd place prize. The cost of the tickets are $20 and are limited to 200 tickets being sold. Don t forget the kids! Raffle # 5 A Youth Bow with all proceeds going to support Team Lincoln Bowmen from our YAP program so they can shoot in Louisville. Remember the youth! What makes these raffle so appealing are the odds. The odds, the odds the odds! Just think, if you buy two tickets for one of the bow raffles your odds of winning jump from one in 300 to one in 100 of winning with three prizes being drawn. My Uncle Ollie and Aunt Hilda told me these are a lot better odds than what they get at Tuesday morning bingo! You can get your tickets from any Board member, during leagues or on Saturday mornings during Y.A.P. 6

Good Eats are on for Lincoln Wild Game Dinner!!!! The Lincoln Bowmen Annual Wild Game is soon approaching with the date slated for Saturday March 24, 2012 at 6:00 pm. There are two new entrees for the dinner this year quail and duck. These are delicacies rarely featured at wild game dinners and Lincoln is delighted to add them to our already 17 plus dinner entrees. You just can t go anywhere and get a dinner like this! There are several new door prizes this year including ten $50 gift certificates to MJC Archery. Along with this we will have the new Lincoln hats on sale (a light camo with a barbed wire lace and black trim). Pretty cool! One of the big featured prizes this year will be the Youth Dream Hunt. A managed and guided youth (ages 12 to 17) bow hunt at the exclusive Wolf Creek Ridge deer range in Howell. This will be followed by an Upland Bird Hunt with a bag allowing for 6 pheasants, 12 quail and 12 chuckers. (see the flyer at the club for further info) There is still a need for perch and walleye for the dinner. If you have some please bring it to the club any night during leagues or Saturday mornings during Y.A.P. and give to a BOD member to put in the freezer. It will be greatly appreciated! There is also a need for workers at the dinner. Especially servers! This requires you be at the club by 4:30 pm and serve food until 7:00 to 7:30 pm. This is a great way to earn work hours. Be around great people, great food and have a few laughs! Contact Larry Thorn at bumbolot@yahoo.com if you would like to do so. Tickets are still available from Sherry Lance any Saturday mornings during Y.A.P. but, they are going fast. Remember this dinner is limited to only 250 people so be sure and get your tickets soon! The ARROW Spotlights With so many kids out there competing I m finding it a bit difficult to keep up. If you parents or youth shooters could drop us an here about your accomplishments I will be happy to post your picture and an article. Next month I m going to post this month s winners of the MET and State shoot. Some of the kids were not available to get their pictures taken in time for this newsletter. Honestly, the information is sent to me I don t go out after it or someone tells me about it. Oh, who forgot to send me the 3D shoot results for February? As always this newsletter remains open to all! Anthony & Holly 7

LINCOLN BOWMEN YOUTH ARCHERY TEAM The Lincoln Bowmen Youth Archery Program is once again preparing for its annual trip to the NFAA Indoor National Championship in Louisville, Kentucky. For some team members this will be their first National tournament. For others, this is another chance to experience the challenge and fun that tournament play brings. The team has been working hard, learning and practicing their skills. Some have progressed to back tension releases and shooting multi-spot targets, challenging themselves to step out of their comfort zone trying new equipment and new shooting techniques; helping to coach and motivate each other as well as other archers in the program. In preparation for the tournament team members practice their skills every Saturday during class and will start an additional practice session on Mondays before league starts. In addition to practice sessions, some archers joined the fun shooting in one or two leagues. If you bump into one of them at the club, stop by and congratulate them!! It is going to be an exciting trip this year! I am very proud to present to you the 2012 Lincoln Bowmen Archery team, made up of the following future Olympians and Team USA contenders! Corbin Boetcher, Camrin Boetcher, Molly Cuddihy, Andrew Deacon, Mathew Hassell, Anna Howey, Nathan Kaufman, Brandy Keesee, Shawn Leones, Sean McSweeney, Holly Pizzini, Jon Rhind, Sadie Searcy, Sarah Searcy, and honorary member Sarah Lance. Finally, I want to take this opportunity to recognize the faithful YAP staff, without whom, this would not be possible. These parents, grandparents, and friends donate just about every Saturday from October through mid-april to mentor our young archers, work on equipment, run the kitchen, work our fund raising events, do administrative work, and anything else that I ask of them. I applaud and thank you all!!! They are: Nick Adams, Rob Aeck, Jeremy Aeck, Craig Boetcher, Nancy Cuddihy, Angel Elliott, Paul Gouth, John Howey, Dave Lance, Sarah Lance, Rocky Leones, Larry McNew, Anthony Pizzini, Diane Searcy, Joe Shamus. THANK YOU! APPLAUSE! APPLAUSE! APPLAUSE! 10

Kids Korner Written by kids for kids! Hey fellow archers Holly here! I want to talk to you about The Grayling Shoot and The Vegas Shoot. regarding what it takes to compete. At Grayling I didn t go to win, I went there to break the State record! I m talking about the mental game here. I knew what I wanted to achieve. It took me a while to get ready for both shoots. Almost every day I was at the club practicing because practice, practice, practice, leads to mastery! I also seen some of my other friends practicing like Nathan Kaufman and he shot his highest score with a 293 winning his division! Way to go Nate! I have learned that archery is broken up into 2 major areas. The physical which is your form and body mechanics (What I learn from Coach Lance and Larry McNew.) I also spent a lot of time studying Sarah Lance and her shot sequence. The second is the mind (What I learned from Glenn Campbell.) Put the two together and surround yourself with positive goal oriented people like yourself (Nathan Kaufman) and your setting yourself up for success! Now don t get me wrong, you learn the mental game while learning the basics in YAP, you have too. As you mature as a person and a archer your mental game grows! Now I m looking towards books for even a greater understanding of the basics! A word from the editor Holly Waz Sup! Greetings fellow archers and archery supporters. Wow, what an exciting month we have coming up! Lets highlight shall we? The Wild Game diner is set to be a blast again this year and we have some awesome prizes to be raffled off. Michigan State shoot kicks off this Friday, Go Team Lincoln Bowmen! Louisville is right around the corner. Team Lincoln Bowmen will be practicing after school and will be clearing out between 6 and 630pm before leagues start or sooner (homework and all). If you see the kids give them a knuckle bump and some words of encouragement! They won t be there every night so don t worry. I do have a word of caution though. If you re an adult who harasses the kids this year because you believe they are in the way of your warm up for league, I m going to make you a promise! I will call you out if I m present and use the ARROW to let everyone know what a fricking knucklehead you are! Kids are the lifeblood of our sport and our club let s raise and teach them together. Are you in on this? Just for the record, I m not this way because Holly is on Team Lincoln Bowmen. I use to teach kids to fly remote control Airplanes and Helicopters before Holly was born. On my days off, I taught fire safety to kids and visited schools. I just like kids! Now you understand why I like to feature kids in this newsletter? The Wall of Wow is nearing completion and will be officially dedicated at the Wild Game Dinner. It s still not to late to send in your pic and stats to make the wall. Other wise you ll have to wait for next year s dinner to have your picture put up. I hope you like the extra signs for Archery Achievements and Team Lincoln Bowmen? Oh, I almost forgot. I started to hang the color pictures and with the exception of Mr. Hoback s there is no order or fore thought placed on the arrangement of the center pictures. However, the right side is in chronological order. If you would like to comment on my ramblings here include your name and fire off an rebuttal for me to use in the next issue. Anthony
