1 THE TRUST SPOTLIGHT E-News December 1, 2014 NEWSLETTER SECTIONS Spotlight Alaska Funding Opportunities National Funding Opportunities Meetings, Conferences and Trainings Publications and Resources Alaska s SHARP loan repayment program Deadlines fast approaching Alaska s Supporting Healthcare Access through Loan Repayment Program (SHARP) is seeking healthcare professionals to work in designated health care shortage areas. In exchange for their service, practitioners will receive repayment of qualifying education loans and/or direct incentive payments. The SHARP program also coordinates with health care sites to arrange placement of health care practitioners. Both practitioners and sites are encouraged to apply. ABOUT THE TRUST The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority is a catalyst for change and improvement in the systems that serve Trust beneficiaries, who include people who experience: mental illness developmental disabilities chronic alcoholism and other substance related disorders Alzheimer s disease and related dementia traumatic brain injury that results in permanent brain injury The Trust provides leadership in advocacy, planning, implementing and funding of a comprehensive integrated mental health program. mhtrust.org The Trust has been a strong partner and advocate for the SHARP program and has contributed funds since In FY15, the Trust has committed to contributing $100,000 and $200,000 in FY16 towards the program. The Trust, through our workforce development focus area, works to address the increasing shortage of healthcare professionals across the state that provide direct patient care to Trust beneficiaries. Trust Training Cooperative: Mental Health First Aid (8-Hour Session) Date: 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., December 17, 2014 Contact: Jill Ramsey at or Location: University of Alaska Southeast, Glacier Hwy, Juneau, AK Description: In this training, Mental Health First Aid trainees are taught how to practice and respond appropriately to mental health problems in a variety of situations, such as helping someone through a panic attack, engaging with someone who may be suicidal, or assisting an individual who has overdosed. Just as CPR training helps a layperson with no clinical training assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis until appropriate professional help arrives.

Presentations are provided on a wide variety of topics, allowing attendees to choose sessions based on their personal and professional interests such as: promoting healthy relationships, person-centered best practices, honoring cultural diversity, stress management, climbing the career ladder, and community inclusion strategies. RESOURCES SAMHSA: Building the Behavioral Health Workforce The most recent SAMHSA Newsletter highlights a new strategic initiative to address the shortage of behavioral health service workers. It also reports on a new block grant for serious mental illness, an alternative to hospitals during crisis, underage substance abuse and problems in adulthood and more. SAMHSA: Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 56 Addressing the Specific Behavioral Health Needs of Men TIP 56 informs clinicians in addressing the needs of men in recovery. This quick guide summarizes the Men's Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model (TREM). TREM was designed to facilitate trauma recovery among women. The developers who adapted TREM for male clients formulated eight basic assumptions about how trauma treatment for men should differ from that provided to women.
