4 2 Northern Regional College Qualifications Explained Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma Qualification (an alternative choice to A Levels) Equivalent to 3 A Levels. Studied over 2 years, full-time. Practical work related course. Provides progression to Higher Education courses at Colleges and/or Universities. Level 3 BTEC 90 Credit Diploma Qualification Equivalent to 1.5 A Levels. Studied over 1 year, full-time. Successful students automatically progress to the second year of the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma. Practical work related course with no examinations. Typical entry requirements Minimum of 4 GCSE s grade C or above to include English and Mathematics. Level 2 Diploma* *Obtaining a Level 2 Diploma qualification does not provide automatic entrance into a Level 3 qualification. All applicants must apply through our Admissions process detailed on pages 3 and 4, or visit Level 2 BTEC Diploma Qualification Equivalent to 4 GCSEs. Studied 1 year, full-time. 5 Northern Regional College 3 The Application Process in Easy Steps Apply Acknowledgement Interview Offer Results Firm Clearing Day Apply online at or complete an application form and return to Central Admissions If you apply online, you will receive an automated acknowledgement and a copy of your completed application for your records; if you apply by hard copy you will receive an acknowledgement letter within 5 working days. You will be invited to attend a compulsory individual/group interview. Interviews will take place from January 2015 up until 20 August 2015 (GCSE Results Registration Day). Any applicants interviewed between January 2015 and GCSE Results Registration Day will either be given a Conditional Offer, subject to meeting entry requirements and any other enhanced criteria, or a Firm Offer if the entry requirements are already met. If you are waiting for GCSE Results, please attend the college on GCSE Results Registration Day, Thursday, 20 August 2015 between 9.30am and 4.30pm with a copy of your results. All applicants with conditional offers and those who have not yet been interviewed should attend. If you are successful in gaining a place on your chosen course, you will receive a Firm Offer from the course tutor either on 20 August, GCSE Results Registration Day or by Friday 21 August 2015 at the latest. If you are not successful in gaining a place on your first choice course, you will be invited to attend Clearing day on Tuesday, 25 August from 10am to 4pm. Friday, 28 August 2015, Enrolment Day, all applicants with a Firm offer should attend on this day at 9am. 6 4 Northern Regional College How to Apply for a Full-Time Course Browse through the course information online at using our course search facility. If you are unsure which course to choose then discuss your options with one of our college careers advisors or alternatively your school DEL careers advisor. Once you have decided which course(s) you are interested in, either complete the online application at or complete the application form in this booklet and return to any campus reception. You may apply for a maximum of 2 courses. If you apply online your application will be acknowledged immediately by an automated message. A copy of your completed application form will also be ed to you so you have a record of your application. If you apply by hard copy application you will receive an acknowledgement letter within 5 working days. All applicants will be invited to attend an individual or group interview. It is compulsory to attend the interview. Interviews will take place from January 2015 up until 20 August If you do not attend for an Interview you will be contacted by letter and requested to confirm if you are still interested in pursuing your application. If we receive no response, you will receive a phone call from Central Admissions. If there is no response to the phone call your application will be withdrawn. Any applicants interviewed between January 2015 and 20 August 2015, GCSE Results Registration Day will either be given a Conditional Offer, subject to meeting entry requirements and any other enhanced criteria, or a Firm Offer if the entry requirements are already met. NOTE: Obtaining a Level 2 Diploma qualification does not provide automatic entrance into a Level 3 qualification. All applicants must apply through our Admissions Process. It is compulsory, if you are waiting for exam results, please bring a copy of them into the campus where the course you applied for is located on GCSE Results Registration Day 20 August 2015 between 9.30am and 4.30pm. By this stage if you have applied for more than one course you would be expected to make a final decision on your chosen course. New applicants are still welcome. If you are successful you will receive a Firm Offer and given an enrolment day card requesting you to start on Friday 28 August 2015 at 9.00am. For Training & ApprenticeshipsNI (Work Based Learning) courses you must attend Registration Day as follows: Tuesday 1 September, 9.30am Brickwork, Carpentry & Joinery, Plastering and Plumbing Wednesday 2 September, 9.30am Motor Vehicle Thursday 3 September, 9.30am Engineering All Firm Offers will be decided and notified to applicants by Friday 21 August 2015 at the latest. If you met entry requirements and received a Firm Offer at Interview stage, you are not required to attend GCSE Results Registration Day. You must attend Enrolment Day on Friday 28 August 2015 at 9am. If you are unsuccessful in gaining a place on your chosen course, you will be referred to Clearing Day which will be held on Tuesday 25 August 2015 from 10am to 4pm. This will provide you with an opportunity to discuss your options with our careers team. If a course is over-subscribed the college reserves the right to enhance the entry criteria. Details of enhanced criteria will be provided at Interview Stage. Please note that communication may be via or letter. 19 Student Successes See Website for more success stories Northern Regional College 17 Engineering Dean Boyle Concorde Cup Dean Boyle was awarded the Concorde Cup in June 2014 for the highest grades in the Level 3 Extended Diploma Manufacturing Engineering. The Sir Winfried Bischoff Award comes from Career Academies UK, a national education charity that helps young people prepare for the world of work through mentoring, workplace visits, inspirational talks and internships. Robert Hamilton scoops Gold Medal at the WorldSkills UK The Skills Show Robert Hamilton, the youngest competitor in the Carpentry & Joinery Skill Area was the gold medal winner in this category at the WorldSkills UK the Skills Show in Birmingham. NRC Lecturer, Trevor Kernohan commented Robert is a dedicated, hard working apprentice who is fully deserving of his success and credit must also go to his employer Mr Rodney Turtle. First Class Design at NRC Shelly Mullan stamps design were discovered on line by the internet Design Company Stamp-Press. co.uk who produces stamp designs. From this Shelly was approached and commissioned to produce designs which will be used commercially by Stamp Press. Shelly is being paid a commission for each stamp sold and will retain the copyright to her signs and credited by name. Annual Irish Society Certificates of Merit Awards The Honourable Irish Society made their annual visit to the Coleraine campus to present special achievement awards to the students in the vocational areas of Construction and Business. The two recipients were Arlene McMullan and Amy Doherty who were recognised as outstanding students in their Level 3 Extended Diploma courses. Newtownabbey Borough Council Sports Award Foundation Art and Design students have once again taken part in a competition to design a trophy for the 2014 prestigious Newtownabbey Borough Council sports awards. This year the winning design came from student Jennifer Wasson. Jennifer s design was manufactured in college and is based on the concept of blood sweat and tears combined with the strong underlay image of the boxing glove showing both the determination and fight needed to succeed. Travel & Tourism Students Reach their Goal Travel & Tourism Students, Kim Hamilton and Maria McMullan both successfully completed the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism at the Magherafelt Campus and are now studying a BA Hons Tourism and Leisure Management at Liverpool John Moore s University. Both students found the Level 3 course very enjoyable, in particular the residential trip as it allowed the class to bond. BEST Awards Science and engineering, life sciences, software development and creative industries featured in the annual College BEST (Business & Education through Training & Skills) Awards. BEST Awards winner in the category (Media) were Andrew Nicholl, Corey Agnew +11 team members for The Clinic a video about the sexual health clinics within NRC. Royal Television Society (RTS) Awards Creative Media Student Michael White has taken away a top award at The Royal Television Society (RTS) Awards. The Ballymena student produced and directed a stop motion project entitled A Christmas Surprise to scoop the Animation Category Award. Beauty Therapy Students Journey Lauren McAllister achieved Level 2 Beauty Therapy and then progressed to level 3. In the same year she also completed Level 3 Nail Technology. She has also just recently successfully completed a 7 week Training programme with the famous Steiner cruise ship company and has been allocated a place within the Beauty Team on the world famous Royal Caribbean Voyager of the sea.
