WHAT THE NUMBERS SAID
2012 CRAFT WAGE SURVEY
WHY TRAINING IS IMPORTANT! A survey conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America found 74 percent of construction firms were having problems finding qualified workers amid growing labor shortages in the industry. HERALD-TRIBUNE ARCHIVE / 2013 / RACHEL S. O'HARA
Nearly half of what will be the built environment in 2030 doesn t exist yet. Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program Report
BLS EMPLOYMENT PROJECTIONS Summary 25% (5.0 million) of all new jobs will come from 3 industries Construction will add the most jobs, 1.84 million. More than 1/4 th of projected fastest growing occupations are related to construction.
WHO WILL BUILD THESE PROJECTS? In just the next five years, at least $2.5 TRILLION in nonresidential construction spending will be realized nationwide and this in turn will drive the need for 6.8 million or more construction tradesmen by 2017 Source: The Construction Labor Market Analyzer 2012
SKILLED CRAFT SHORTAGES 2012 The Most Difficult Positions To Fill Globally 1. Skilled Trade Workers 6. Accounting & Finance Staff 2. Engineers 7. Drivers 3. Sales Representatives 8. Management / Executives 4. Technicians 9. Laborers 5. IT Staff 10. Office Support Staff Top Craft Workers Shortage Projected for % of U.S. general contractors are experiencing or expect skill craft shortages Commercial Electricians HVAC / Boilermakers Carpentry & Millwork Concrete Finisher/Cement Mason Industrial Welders Pipefitters Electricians Insulators/Millwrights Sources: 1 Manpower Group 2012 Talent Shortage Survey 2 The Green Workforce: Industry Insights on Green Jobs, Training and Workforce Issues
CONSTRUCTION WORKFORCE CHALLENGE WHO WILL BUILD AMERICA? 75 million baby boomers approaching retirement age Everyday 10,000 baby boomers will reach age 65 over the next 16 years 20% of the construction workforce will retire in the next 2-4 years 2010: More than ½ of the U.S. population is over 50 Youth Demographic <18 ill shrink in comparison to adult population >65 will grow faster than total population
The Skills Gap Over the past 50 years the need for unskilled workers has decreased 400%,the demand for Skilled Professionals has increased 325% while jobs requiring a college degree has remained the same Unskilled 60% Skilled, 20% Unskilled 35% Skilled 45% Skilled 65% Unskilled 15% fessional 20% Professional 20% Professional 20%
SOLVING THE WORKFORCE SHORTAGE Align technical training with business needs Develop certifications to accelerate mobility Source: Manpower Group Entering the Human Age: Through Leadership Insights, 2011
WHAT IS THE PATHWAYS CHALLENGE? The United States is increasingly failing to prepare young people to lead successful lives as adults: College for All needs to be broadened to mean a meaningful post-high school credential for all We have lost our global leadership in educational attainment and achievement Teen and young adults (20-24) are increasingly unable to find work The transition to adulthood is far longer THE DANGER: A WASTED GENERATION Source: Pathways to Prosperity 2011 White Paper from the Harvard Graduate School of Education
EDUCATION IMPACT According to NCPN s Thriving in Challenging Times, approximately a million high school students dropout annually. The primary reason: they didn t believe high school was relevant, or providing a pathway to achieving their dreams. 7,000 Drop out of school each day 1.2 million per year 12% of the schools account for 50% Loss of 319 billion dollars in potential earnings Source: 1-Institute for a Competitive Workforce and National Career Pathways Network, April Pathways to Prosperity 2011 White Paper from the Harvard Graduate School of Education
We fail these young people not because we are indifferent, but because we have focused too exclusively on a few narrow pathways to success. Pathways to Prosperity, Harvard Graduate School of Education
Cutting-edge CTE bears little relationship to the old vocational education programs that were often little more than dumping grounds for students who couldn t cut it in college prep. Pathways to Prosperity, Harvard Graduate School of Education
I remember the formula used to find the volume of a cylinder, not by the assignment of questions 1-36 of some page of some textbook, but by being told to build a 50-gallon scrap bin. Austin Kocian
EMPLOYMENT AND CREDENTIALS Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce reports: 43% of young workers with Licenses and Certificates earn more than those with an associate degree 27% of young workers with Licenses and Certificates earn more than those with a bachelor s degree 31% of young workers with associate degrees earn more than those with a bachelor s degree Source: Center on Education and the Workforce, Valuing Certificates, Presentation, 2009) 20

WHAT DOES INDUSTRY SAY? Applicants who apply for jobs with LPR and already have NCCER credentials are always placed at a higher premium than those applicants that do not have any credentials. Students who come out of high school with their NCCER core training completed are placed directly in one of our apprentice programs and paid a dollar more an hour. Students who complete OSHA 10 through the NCCER Safety Orientation curriculum are also placed at a higher priority when we rank job applicants. Bryan McClure, MT Training Manager L.P.R. Construction Co
WHAT DOES INDUSTRY SAY? The NCCER curricula and credentialing is the standard for determining craftperson competency for our company and the industrial construction industry. HR hiring coordinators routinely inquire about NCCER training and certifications during the hiring process. It is proven that employing NCCER trained and certified craft professionals improves safety, productivity and quality on our projects. Construction offers a world of opportunities for young people, given the widely known age demographics of our industry. Rob MacCarthy, Craft Training Manager TIC Training Department
