Dear Carolers: Thank you for joining Fair Trade Holiday Caroling! You are about to have a lot of fun, while supporting countless farmers and artisans around the world as they build a better future for themselves and their families. I wanted to share the words of Pedro Torrez, Secretary of the La Pita Fair Trade coffee cooperative in Nicaragua: To be certified Fair Trade was a great joy for us. Fair Trade has enabled this cooperative to survive. You ask how you can help. You are helping. You are spreading awareness of our situation and our poverty. You help us much more this way than giving money. Mr. Torrez shared these sentiments with me and a group of Global Exchange Fair Harvest Reality Tour participants, who were in Nicaragua to help bring in the annual Fair Trade coffee harvest. During my trip, Fair Trade producers spoke often of the dignity that comes from supporting their families with their own farms and businesses. Fair Trade gives these families an alternative to working in low-paying, exploitative jobs on plantations or in sweatshops. They made it clear that their dreams depend on volunteers like us spreading the word about the Fair Trade system. As citizens of countries that import Fair Trade products, we can help to sustain a vibrant market for their goods. Together, Fair Trade Holiday Carolers will make a huge impact in making that market even more vibrant, by asking thousands of people to commit to buying Fair Trade with their Fair Trade New Year s Resolutions. Thanks again for caroling with us this year! Afterwards, please stay involved in Fair Trade advocacy! Visit for a list of participating organizations that offer Fair Trade programs. Sincerely, Adrienne Fitch-Frankel Fair Trade Campaign Director, Global Exchange PS: You can write and submit your own original Fair Trade Holiday Carols and we will post them online! Send your song to fairtrade@globalexchange.org with Fair Trade Holiday Carol submission in the subject line. Please include the name of the traditional carol or song that should be used for the melody. f
How to Fair Trade Holiday Carol What to do in advance: 1. Get a caroling group together. Invite friends, family, or members of your congregation, school, youth group or other group.] 2. Decide on a date, time, and location. Date: Anytime in December, but we encourage you to consider caroling during the first two weeks of December, in order to invite people to purchase their gifts Fair Trade during holiday shopping. Location: Anywhere you might encounter people who might not know much about Fair Trade door-to-door; holiday parties you attend or organize (consider inviting attendees to go caroling door-to-door afterwards!); Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or other holiday dinners with family; bustling public places (shopping districts, or the entrance to a movie theatre or subway station); your congregation; school holiday play. 3. Photocopy the caroling materials: Fair Trade Holiday Carol Songbook: Enough so carolers can easily see the lyrics, even in the dark (to conserve paper, please print double-sided!); additional, new songs will be available at New Year s Resolution Form, Flyer, and Coupons: Enough for each household or audience. New Year s Resolution record: Enough for the number of New Year s Resolutions you think you will collect. 4. Put aside a clipboard and a couple of pens to use while caroling. 5. Send an to your referring organization or fairtrade@globalexchange.org to let us know the number of carolers in your group, so we can announce how many people participated! Optional tasks to do in advance: 1. Create and photocopy a list of the names and addresses of retailers in your area that carry Fair Trade products, to hand out to each household Distribute the carols to participants in advance so that they can practice. 3. If you are caroling with children, you might read a Fair Trade book or curriculum in advance with the children, so they understand Fair Trade Contact your local media and invite them to trail you while caroling. 3 1 Resources to generate your list are at and Fair Trade coalitions in some cities have lists, such as New York ( inder.php), San Francisco ( and Seattle ( which has a map. 2 Fair Trade books and curricula for children are available at or 3 Information on how to contact the media and a model media advisory are available
5. Plan to take photos, videos, or mp3 s to to your friends and family, like a musical e-card, and to post online! What to do right before you start caroling: 1. Practice each of the carols at least once as a group. 2. Invite all the carolers to fill out Fair Trade New Year s Resolutions themselves! What to do when you are caroling: We suggest this sequence: 1. Sing 2-3 carols. If you are caroling door-to-door, ring the doorbell and then start singing right away, so that residents will know to answer the door. (If the residents do not answer the door, leave a flyer and coupon page.) 2. Read the Fair Trade Public Education Script. 3. Ask your audience to make a Fair Trade New Year s Resolution. Individuals making a Resolution should fill out BOTH the New Year s Resolution Form, which they keep, AND the New Year s Resolution Record, which you keep. If you are caroling in a public place, holiday party, etc, you might have volunteers walk around the audience with forms on clipboards. 4. Give your audience the flyer, coupon page, and any other materials about Fair Trade. 5. Sing one or two additional carols. After you finish caroling: 1. Please mail your New Year s Resolution Records no later than January 2, so that we can tally the number of people who made Resolutions and add them to the listservs. Mail them to the organization that referred you to Fair Trade Holiday caroling. If you do not have a referring organization, mail your forms to Global Exchange; 2017 Mission Street; San Francisco, CA Post videos at and send photos and mp3 s to fairtrade@globalexchange.org to be posted to our Flickr account and website. Fair Trade Holiday Caroling is an initiative of Global Exchange s Fair Trade Sweet Smarts Campaign in collaboration with nonprofit organizations, Fair Trade companies, schools, congregations, and youth groups nationwide and around the world. 5 Fair Trade Public Education Script Note: (1) Sections in italics are optional. (2) Please feel free to explain in your own words why you personally care about Fair Trade! Happy Holidays! We are participating in Fair Trade Holiday Caroling, along with groups of carolers in countries around the world. We are spreading holiday cheer, and also sharing information with our neighbors about Fair Trade and how each of us can change our purchasing habits to help farmers and artisans escape poverty. This does not require us to buy more, just to buy differently. In the holiday spirit of goodwill toward others, we hope you will consider making a Fair Trade New Year s Resolution. First, we would like to share with you just one example among hundreds of thousands of families who are lifting themselves out of poverty and dismal working conditions, through Fair Trade. As a young woman, Maria was a worker on a Nicaraguan coffee plantation for six years. She worked as much as 22 hours a day, picking coffee, tending coffee trees, and cooking for the other workers. Due to the working conditions, she became very ill and almost died. When she could no longer work, her younger brother sold firewood to support the family, but he was such a small child that he struggled to carry the heavy loads. To save her life, she left the plantation and helped start a coffee cooperative, where she could work and live with the dignity of working for herself on her own very small coffee farm. Thanks to the cooperative and the Fair Trade price she earned for her coffee, Maria was able to send her younger brother to university and he is now an engineer and homeowner. If you have never heard of Fair Trade products before, Fair Trade farmers and artisans: * Receive a higher price for their goods, so they can access health care and education, and build a brighter future for their families * And operate under standards that protect workers and the environment s
Fair Trade items that are available include: * Food products, such as coffee and chocolate, which are monitored for Fair Trade standards by an independent third party under the Fair Trade USA label and * Gifts, crafts, and clothing which are screened by the Fair Trade Federation These Fair Trade products are available in every price range, often at the same or similar prices to comparable items. The flyer we are distributing tells you how to find these products. Courageous Fair Trade farmers and artisans are transforming their families lives one coffee or cocoa bean at a time. Yet they can only succeed if people like you and me choose products from Fair Trade cooperatives and help spread the word to other consumers. We would like to ask you to do two simple things, by filling out our New Year s Resolution form. We would like to ask you to: (1) take action in at least one way, such as asking others to buy Fair Trade, and (2) plan to purchase at least one Fair Trade item, such as a package of Fair Trade coffee or tea. As a caroling group, our goal is to collect at least Fair Trade New Year s Resolutions this year. If thousands of people worldwide make a Fair Trade New Year s Resolution, together, we will have a huge impact on helping people lift themselves out of poverty. We are also encouraging people to make all or most of their holiday gift purchases Fair Trade, which helps transform the life of a farmer or artisan family. If you are new to Fair Trade, feel free to give it a try, and just commit to one item on the list. If you already purchase Fair Trade, we invite you to set a higher goal. An easy first step that we can help with right now is to join a Fair Trade listserv, which usually only sends s once or twice a month. We also have Fair Trade coupons, so you can get a discount on your first purchase. f

This holiday season, with Fair Trade chocolate, coffee, and gifts you can eat, drink and be merry!!! Why merry? Because you can feel great about how the purchases you are making are transforming the world and helping to end poverty! 000 In a world in which many farmers and workers live in poverty while producing the goods we enjoy, Fair Trade provides a pathway out of poverty. 000 Fair Trade farmers and artisans earn a stable price that enables them to access basic needs like education and health care, and build the hope of a brighter future for their families. Here are four simple things you can do: 1. Buy Fair Trade products. Chocolate, coffee, tea, and other foods: Look for the Fair Trade USA label Many retailers listed at fairtradeusa.org/content/wheretobuy Clothing, crafts, and gifts: Look for Fair Trade Federation members Many retailers listed at fairtradefederation.org/members Find special offers on Fair Trade holiday gifts and take the Fair Trade holiday gift pledge at givefairtrade.wordpress.com. 2. Learn more about Fair Trade. Google Fair Trade to visit a website and join a listserv. 3. Get involved! Help advocate for Fair Trade with any of the websites you find online, through fun activities in your community! 4. Tell any educators you know that there are free Fair Trade curricula available at so that children can learn about Fair Trade, too! To learn more about participating organizations, visit Ever since I took a pledge to make all of my holiday gift purchasing Fair Trade, my shopping has become so much easier and more satisfying! Every year, I walk into my local Fair Trade store with the list of gifts I need to buy, and walk out an hour later with all my shopping complete. When I distribute my holiday gifts, many have tears in their eyes as they read about the transformation those gifts made in the lives of another family. Each of my loved ones finds it moving and meaningful in the spirit of the holiday season. I hope you will consider joining me in buying Fair Trade, too, whether you do your Fair Trade shopping online or at a store. Adrienne Fitch-Frankel, Fair Trade Campaign Director, Global Exchange

O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way! O what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh. A day or two ago, I thought I'd take a ride And soon Miss Fanny Bright, was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank, misfortune seemed his lot; He got into a drifted bank and we got upsot (Chorus) A day or two ago, the story I must tell I went out on the snow, and on my back I fell; A gent was riding by, in a one-horse open sleigh He laughed as there I sprawling lie but quickly drove away f 17
