2 DANTE Dante was born in Florence, to the prominent Alighieri family. His studies focused on rhetoric, grammar, philosophy, literature and theology. He was one of the first authors to write in the vernacular Tuscan and thus had a defining effect on what Italian is today. He met Beatrice Portinari, at the age of nine, whom he fell deeply in love with. Unfortunately, when Dante was twelve he was promised to another woman, Gemma di Manetto Donati, and so Beatrice married someone else. Dante s relationship with Beatrice existed purely in his mind, although he met Beatrice briefly after his marriage. She sadly died when Dante was twenty five. Nonetheless Beatrice played an incredibly important role in his poetry, and in his masterpiece The Divine Comedy, Dante attributed all the heavenly virtues to her soul and imagined that she was his guardian angel leading him on his search for salvation. An homage to the literal genius whose works are still read to this day, Dante is a restaurant of old Italy overflowing with the essence of Tuscany and Florence.
