5 Smart Grid Activities in Thailand Interviews and Results Current installations and applications SCADA, has been installed and utilized in Thailand as MEA has used SCADA MEA has been using an Energy Management System (EMS) to analyze power flow and contingency on the supply side Communication through intranet and fiber optic lines in compliance with IEC 61850, is gradually being installed (10 20 MEA substations per year) Distribution Management System (DMS) is installed Automatic Reader Meters (AMR) for TOU customers (already 8,000 pcs and 23,000 pcs are planned for 2013)

7 Smart Grid Activities in Thailand Interviews and Results Further perspective and planning MEA plans to revise the EMS system with inclusion of a standard communication protocols like DNP3, and ICCP EPPO with ERI of Chulalongkorn University want to finalize their Smart Grid plan by 2013 This will provide strategies and guidelines for future investment and Smart Grid promotion Pilot project to transmit customers information from their power meters through a 3G mobile telephone system to the center (by KMITL) TEBA is currently implementing with the Senate a Smart Grid Round Table

(Applied Technical Systems Ltd ), the term Smart Grid in developed countries is very different to Vietnam ATS defines Smart Grid as A platform to improve the efficiency and reduce loss in generation, transmission and distribution. Smart Grid also aims to create a culture of energy saving and conservation, and stimulate the integration and development of RE Benefits of Smart Grid Improvement of grid reliability and stabilities Improvement of quality of power transmission and distribution
16 Smart Grid Activities in Vietnam Issues and Barriers - 1 Technical Highly heterogeneous grid & Lack of standardization and roadmaps Requires heavy investment on improving and modernizing generation, transmission, distribution and even household systems Lack of Smart Grid expertise & Limited public relation activities Financial Large investment for Smart Grid over the next 20 years is a very challenging task for the government Result in the increase of electricity price, which will have a broad effect on the whole society Current electricity price schemes are too low Business model not yet decided
