2 Panic Alarms Introduction This program is to refresh policy on Panic Alarm use at London Health Sciences Centre in Mental Health areas, in order to ensure employee safety The course will take approximately 15 minutes to complete There will be a short quiz at the end of the training
3 Panic Alarms Learning Objectives At the end of this module, you should be able to understand: When to wear a panic alarm Where on your body the panic alarm is to be worn How to test and activate the panic alarm What to do if someone activates a panic alarm Who to ask if you have additional questions

5 Panic Alarms Types of Panic Alarms Portable Fixed The different types of panic alarms activate the same alarm system
6 When to wear them If you work in outpatient mental health the panic alarms are only worn during certain situations, ensure you contact your coordinator to be clear when to wear it It is better to wear it too often than not enough! Ensure the alarm is working, ask if you do not know how to check it Contact Security if you have any questions
7 How to access a temporary panic alarm Report to reception and/or nursing station Identify your purpose for being on the unit Panic alarm will be assigned as appropriate Sign out your panic alarm Receive instructions on panic alarm use Return panic button when leaving unit ; sign for return of panic alarm
8 Wear it all the time in Inpatient Mental Health
9 Placement on the body In the event of an emergency the panic alarm must be easily accessible The panic alarm must be worn above the elbows and below the collar bone, see triangle for acceptable areas Panic alarms must not be attached to a lanyard and must be securely attached to clothing
10 Placement on the body UNDER THE COLLAR BONE ABOVE ELBOW HEIGHT
11 Testing a panic alarm in Mental Health At the beginning of every shift on the Mental Health inpatient units ensure your panic alarm is functioning correctly by completing the following check Locate the Honeywell computer, in the Communication Station or scroll through the remote display unit
12 Testing a panic alarm in Mental Health on the Honeywell computer Press: F12 Locate the words: Go to Detail for and in the empty box type in the ID information located on the back of the badge. For example: MH_123, CAMH_234 Press: OK
13 Testing a panic alarm in Mental Health on the Honeywell computer After a couple of moments the screen will populate: Button 1: Normal Badge Status: Active Description: Badge owner s name This means that the badge is in correct working order and is safe for the employee to wear

16 How to activate Press and hold the button for at least 3 seconds Longer is better Push here
17 How to activate Pushing the button activates sensors in the ceiling which summons help
18 After activation In Mental Health, help comes from: MH Staff, Orderlies, Security
19 After activation Security always comes quickly
20 After activation In Mental Health, if you are not the one calling for help, run to provide assistance to the employee who needs help
21 Maintenance If the panic alarm is tested and does not work Go to your coordinator Get a replacement right away Send the broken one to Security Security will answer your questions Panic alarms are powered by batteries, are not waterproof or water resistant The alarm is durable but not unbreakable
