2 Presentation This three-year undergraduate degree program and its academic regulations were prompted by the need to form professional figures with solid foundational preparation and specific skills for communicating scientific information on pharmaceuticals and health products. In fact, the increased age expectancy in industrialized nations not only demands ever-greater knowledge of pharmaceuticals on the market, but also has lead to expanded use of products and activities to promote health in its etymological sense of state of well-being. European regulations oversee the introduction of diversified categories of products for healthenhancement (food supplements, nutraceuticals, novel foods, cosmeceuticals, etc.). There will be a need for figures who provide information to consumers and to healthcare workers in the public and private sectors, especially in order to ensure the correct use of these products according to the regulations of the Healthcare Services of Italy and of the European Union. The three-year undergraduate degree program in Pharmaceutical and Health Product Representative at the University of Camerino has drawn a high number of working students whose employment makes it difficult for them to attend lessons. In order to overcome this hurdle, the University has developed e-learning material tailored to prepare students for their examinations in this degree program. When students enrol for this degree program, they can request access to this material, which will be provided, under the conditions listed below. Objectives The three-year undergraduate degree program in Pharmaceutical and Health Product Representative forms professionals with knowledge of the methods and cultural and scientific content needed to attain the educational level required by the professional area of class -29. The graduate in this degree program has foundational knowledge in chemistry, biology, mathematics, physics and computer science, subjects essential for further on-the-job training in this profession. The three-year degree program in Pharmaceutical and Health Product Representative offers two concentrations, in order to afford specialized preparation that will enhance employability. The curriculum in Pharmaceutical Representative provides knowledge of the characteristics and properties of medicines, medical-surgical aids, diagnostics, and dietetic products in order to form experts capable of communicating scientific information to healthcare providers, as stipulated by the Italian and the European Community Healthcare Service. The curriculum in Sciences and Technologies of Fitness and Health Products prepares professionals who can explain the correct use of health products for maintaining psycho-physical well-being. The program of studies offers specialized disciplines that provide: a solid scientific preparation in nutrition so the graduate can evaluate issues related to the use of dietetic products and provide correct scientific information on them; chemical and pharmacological understanding, in order to give correct scientific information on the implications of the use of synthesized or herbal pharmaceuticals and food supplements; knowledge of pharmacology and toxicology in order to provide information on the risks involved in using extraneous substances and doping substances in various kinds of preparations. This three-year degree program requires the earning of 180 academic credits (CFU). At the moment of enrolment, the student can choose between the two curricula. The program entails lessons in theory (face to face) and others in practice, through classroom or laboratory exercises. In addition, the student must complete between 75 and 125 hours of apprenticeship in formation and orientation. At least 60% of the overall time commitment is dedicated to personal study or other types of _ 2
3 individual formative activities. Occupational opportunities Graduates in Pharmaceutical and Health Product Representative, with the concentration as Pharmaceutical Representative can: work as pharmaceutical representatives in order to periodically inform healthcare professionals about the characteristics and properties of medicines, medical-surgical aids, diagnostics, and dietetic products. Graduates in Pharmaceutical and Health Product Representative, with the concentration in Sciences and Technologies of Fitness and Health Products, can employ their multidisciplinary professional knowledge and skills in gyms, sports groups and wellbeing centers to develop and maintain psycho-physical well-being. Admission requirements While the knowledge necessary to pass the national high school exit examination is deemed necessary and sufficient, admission to the degree program in Pharmacy also requires an entrance test to identify any lacunae in the student s preparation and direct him or her to the appropriate university-provided integration courses and tutoring services to resolve the deficits. The integration courses are held before the beginning of lessons, while the tutoring courses are held in pre-established periods during the academic year. The schedule is published at Faculty President s Secretariat and at the Student Registrar. The presentation can be done in English, as can the final examination. The order in which courses should be followed The Faculty Council has established the following order in which courses should be followed. Attendance and examinations for multi-year courses must respect the priority indicated by the number assigned the course. Normally, first year examinations must precede those of the second year, and the second year examinations must precede those of the third year. Students are not allowed to take examinations for the disciplines listed in column A until they have passed the examinations listed in column B. Academic Organization The three-year degree program is scheduled on a semester basis. The schedule of lessons is available at the Faculty Secretariat and at the Registrar. Registration, passages and transfers to the reformed Course will not be accepted if presented or received after November 5, In the months of January and May, there will be a one-week period of intensive lessons on some subjects, with obligatory attendance. During the three years of the degree program, there will be seminars regarding issues in scientific information for pharmaceuticals. Students whose attendance is in good order will take the examinations that assess their mastery of the material taught in a didactic period, at the examination session concluding that period, or in subsequent sessions, as established in the Faculty Council calendar. In order to earn the credits for English and other obligatory activities and elective activities, the student must successfully take pass/fail examinations. In order to register for studies after the third year, the following conditions must be met: _ 6
7 Students registered for the third year, who still have to take more than two examinations, cannot be registered as fuori corso of the third year. Instead, they must register for a repeat third year, until they reach this condition. In their last year of the degree program, students gain direct professional experience through an internship, either by accompanying a Pharmaceutical Representative employed by a pharmaceutical firm, for at least two weeks, or by working at scientific structures of the Faculty for at least two months. For organizational exigencies, students must inform the Secretariat of the Faculty of the internship at least six months before their graduation date. Subsequently, the University Internship Office will formalize the request. Internships accompanying pharmaceutical representatives may be conducted in the area of the student s home. Tutoring Teachers of the degree program are available to help students with clarifications on the lessons, during scheduled receiving hours established at the beginning of the academic year. They are also available for assistance by phone or Internet. In addition, each student can avail of individual or group tutoring provided by teachers and tutors designated by the Faculty for the degree program. Students registered in the Curriculum in Pharmaceutical Representative may request the various forms of assistance available for all students enrolled at the University of Camerino. For further information or clarification, contact: The Registrar (Segreterie Studenti) of the University of Camerino (Via e Mosse, 69 - tel / ), for administrative issues; The Secretariat of the President of the Faculty of Pharmacy (Piazza dei Costanti, - tel. 0737/ farmacia@unicam.it) for academic and organizational issues. _ 7
