Arkansas State University College of Nursing and Health Professions Department of Occupational Therapy Jonesboro, Arkansas Addendum to OTA Student Handbook October 2015

Below are revisions the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program has made to the OTA student handbook which are effective immediately. These changes will be incorporated into the OTA student handbook in Spring, ACOTE ACCREDITATION After the program has achieved accreditation status, graduates will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for occupational therapy administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After passing this examination, the graduate will be a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). Most states require licensure, and successful completion of the NBCOT examination is usually requested in the licensure application process. Student eligibility to sit for the NBCOT exam and to obtain state licensure may be impacted if the student has any previous felony convictions. OTA PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY MISSION STATEMENTS The occupational therapy assistant program holds the belief that all people have the right to live life to its fullest and to engage in meaningful occupations that meet their wants and needs. Humans are active beings whose development over time is enhanced by a sense of purpose. Through the use of meaningful and goal directed activities along with an innate capacity for intrinsic motivation and ability to adapt, humans are able to influence their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being as well as their social and physical environments. Just as occupations are influenced by temporal and cultural contexts, so too is the profession of occupational therapy. While the profession continues to uphold its central belief in the therapeutic value of everyday occupations, the profession also embraces the need to constantly develop new knowledge and approaches that supports the use of occupation to elicit maximum functional independence. This evolution of ideas, knowledge, and approaches allows the profession to remain relevant, science-driven, evidence-based, and client-centered in the constantly changing landscape of today s society. Therefore, occupational therapy educational activities and learning experiences must be purposeful and relevant for the student. They must involve active learning and critical inquiry in a collaborative environment that promotes teamwork and respect for the individual. The OTA program believes student learning occurs in a developmental sequence similar to the way typically developing children learn, grow, and acquire knowledge and skills. That is, a student needs to learn fundamental knowledge and skills prior to being required to apply that knowledge or set of skills in a clinical situation just like a child would not be expected to walk without first acquiring the prerequisite skills of rolling, sitting up, creeping, etc. This developmental learning process is best defined by Bloom's Taxonomy which states a student needs to gain knowledge and comprehension within a certain area prior to being able to apply and analyze that knowledge and set of skills in a "real world" environment. Furthermore, a student needs to be able to apply and analyze that knowledge and set of skills prior to being able

to synthesize and evaluate that knowledge and skill set, and, eventually, generalize that knowledge to other relevant areas. The OTA program also acknowledges that not all students learn the same way. Some students learn best through auditory input, while others learn best by visually seeing the information, and, yet, others learn best kinesthetically by interacting with the material. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of the program students will be able to: 1. Identify areas for continued professional learning/education that enhance the student s professional growth. 2. Plan and provide occupational therapy services that are client-centered and occupationbased. 3. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills with all members of the healthcare team. 4. Apply sound ethical principles to guide and direct the occupational therapy process. 5. Utilize sound clinical reasoning throughout the occupational therapy process while considering all client and contextual factors. 6. Develop the knowledge and skills to become leaders in the profession, and advocate for clients and the profession. ACADEMIC STANDARDS Regular Advising Meeting All students in the College of Nursing and Health Professions, including OTA students, are required to meet with their advisor on a regular basis to review grades, progress in the program, and academic standing. Meeting with an advisor on a regular basis is defined as a student meeting with his/her academic/program advisor at least once a semester. A student may be required to meet with his/her academic/program advisor more frequently during any given semester depending on the student s needs, issues, or concerns. Progression In addition to academic standards outlined by Arkansas State University, the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program has specific academic policies and procedures that address how students progress in the professional curriculum. In general, students must meet the following criteria: 1. maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA in all Occupational Therapy Assistant Program courses, 2. receive grades of C or better in all professional courses, 3. maintain academic integrity and professional behavior in classroom, laboratory, any fieldwork sites visited, and in the community, 4. maintain the standards of affiliating fieldwork facilities, and

5. exhibit affective behaviors consistent with the Professional Behavior Expectations and AOTA Code of Ethics. SATISFACTORY PROGRESS IN THE OTA PROGRAM The timeline for satisfactory completion of the OTA program is as follows: OTA Courses OTA2013: Fundamentals of Treatment OTA2023: Emergence of OT Science OTA2033: Technology Skills Training I OTA2043: From Disease to Practice OTA2103: OTA in Behavioral Health OTA2071: Fieldwork Education IA OTA2093: Technology Skills Training II OTA2053: Gerontology for the OTA OTA2063: Pediatrics for the OTA OTA2081: Fieldwork IB OTA2114: Fieldwork Education IIA OTA2131: Fieldwork Seminar OTA2124: Fieldwork Education IIB OTA2131: Fieldwork Seminar Semester Fall Semester Spring Semester Summer Semester Students must satisfactorily complete all courses in the fall and spring semesters in order to progress to the spring and summer semesters, respectively courses CANNOT be taken out of sequence. If students pass all courses with a 75% (letter grade of C ) then they will be considered a candidate for graduation at the end of the summer semester. Students may not meet the requirements for graduation unsatisfactory performance or extenuating circumstances. Unsatisfactory Performance Students with unsatisfactory academic, fieldwork, and/or affective performance can result in the student being dismissed from the program. Unsatisfactory academic performance consists of (1) having a cumulative GPA below 3.0 in all Occupational Therapy Assistant Program courses; (2) receiving a grade below 75% (C) in all professional courses; and/or (3) having excessive absences. Unsatisfactory fieldwork performance means that a student (1) received a grade below the required 75% (C) on any level I or level II fieldwork course; (2) failed to meet the level II fieldwork education requirements as established on the Fieldwork Performance Evaluation; and (3) violated certain "critical behaviors" (Appendix B). Unsatisfactory affective performance consists of the student not being able to (1) maintain academic integrity and professional behavior in classroom, laboratory, any fieldwork sites visited, and in the community; and (2) exhibit affective behaviors consistent with the Professional Behavior Expectations and AOTA Code of Ethics. Students that violate one or more of the above mentioned areas during a semester by the OTA program director, OTA AFWC, or OTA faculty member may be given an opportunity to remediate the violated area. The OTA program director, OTA AFWC, OTA faculty, and student

will meet to develop a remediation plan the student will need to follow in order to satisfactorily continue in the program. If the OTA program director, OTA AFWC, and OTA faculty deem the violation too severe to remediate, or determine the student did not satisfactorily follow the remediation plan then the student will be dismissed from the program. Students who are dismissed from the program due to unsatisfactory performance will be allowed to re-apply to the program for the following academic year to complete their program requirements. Passing grades in all academic coursework completed in the previous academic year related to the OTA program will be accepted as transfer credits and students will take the remaining courses they need in the semester where they are offered. Upon successful completion of all academic courses and fieldwork experiences, students will graduate with the class they joined. Students who have unsatisfactory performance the second time will be dismissed from the program and will not be allowed to re-apply to the program again. Extenuating Circumstances According to University policy, an extenuating circumstance is defined as situations beyond the student s control that do not allow them to successfully complete their semester. Examples include: prolonged illness, accidents that require hospitalization of the student or immediate family member, death of an immediate family member, or divorce of the student or the student s parents ( Any student that is unable to successfully complete one or more academic courses or fieldwork experiences due to an extenuating circumstance the student will follow the University appeals process in order to repeat any missing academic courses or fieldwork experiences without receiving a failing grade as well as having to reapply for the program. SPECIFIC STUDENT REQUIREMENTS Equipment Online Education Equipment The Arkansas State University OTA program curriculum includes one online, or distance education, course - OTA2131: Fieldwork Seminar. The OTA 2131 Fieldwork Seminar course is offered concurrent with Level IIA & IIB fieldwork education experiences. Since this course is an online course, students are required to have access to a computer, laptop, or mobile device (e.g., IPad) with a webcam that will allow them to connect to Blackboard the University s distance learning management software and use the Respondus Browser. Use of OTA Educational Equipment and Supplies OTA students are expected to observe procedures and precautions for proper use and care of laboratory equipment and supplies, including but not limited to personal protective equipment, therapeutic media, PAMs, splinting, suspended/sensory equipment, etc. Items are to be correctly stored and returned to their proper places. OTA students will be instructed on specific equipment and supply safety and use prior to beginning any class activity. The students are expected to attend to this instruction and follow proper safety precautions. If students are unsure about safe use or handling of any items, it is the students responsibility to seek clarification from the

instructor or Fieldwork Educator. Furthermore, if any educational equipment or supplies are found to be damaged or in need of repair students are expected to report this immediately to the course instructor. FIELDWORK EDUCATION POLICIES AND PROCEDURES Distance Education The Arkansas State University OTA program requires students to take one online, distance education, course OTA2131: Fieldwork Seminar. This course is offered concurrently with the Level IIA & IIB fieldwork education experiences. In order to participate in this course, students are required to have access to a computer, laptop, or mobile device (e.g., IPad) with a webcam that will allow them to connect to Blackboard and use the Respondus Browser. As part of the course, students will be required to complete assignments online and in-person at their fieldwork sites. Although this course is offered online, students are expected to adhere to the College of Nursing and Health Professions Code of Honor and the AOTA Code of Ethics. Thus, this course requires students to verify their identity and originality of their work in two ways: (1) online assignments are to be submitted through Blackboard s Respondus Browser; and (2) in-person supervised assignments will be proctored by fieldwork personnel at the student s fieldwork site. Currently, the university is piloting several other options to verify student identity in online courses. Once these new student authentication procedures are in place, the OTA program will update the above process to reflect these changes.
