3 The Savoy Theatre: Leading the Way with LED Decreased Energy Usage, Increased Control The Ambassador Theatre Group Venue The Savoy Theatre, London Planning: 6 Months Installation: 3 Weeks on-site Deliver first of its kind energy-efficient house lighting system for the West End theatre, integrating existing fittings Brightness, energy savings, and smooth dimming curve Value of Contract 150K Key Product ArcLamp LEDs from GDS The Ambassador Theatre Group the largest theatre owner in the UK asked White Light to consult on a new energy efficient house lighting system for the iconic Savoy Theatre. White Light Projects Director Simon Needle oversaw the installation, working closely with ATG Technical Director John Young and Savoy Theatre Manager Glen Cottenden to identify key requirements and ideal outcomes of the project. The Savoy Theatre s unique lighting elements - a candelabra style facing on the grand circle, overhead light boxes near the proscenium, and coldcathode tubing for upper balconies - led the team to seek out new product development as nothing on the market would accommodate existing fittings. The new system installed by White Light in just 3 weeks is the first of its kind in London s West End. Based entirely on LED technology, it draws less power and produces less heat than the previous lighting system, creating huge energy savings for the space. The installation is also the first in the world to utilise the new ArcLamp fixture from GDS. Developed specifically for the Savoy Theatre project, it is designed for installations where clients wish to keep existing lamp housings due to economic or design imperatives. Challenge The project required a system that delivered on brightness, energy savings, ease of use, and crucially a smooth dimming curve. It is important to critically consider how the lighting is going to be used and who will experience it, Simon Needle explains. In a theatre or performance space such as the Savoy, house lighting is a part of the entire theatrical experience. It was essential for the new system to replicate the look and feel of tungsten, he said. Solution In total, a combination of 269 clear and frosted ArcLamp fittings were installed at the Savoy Theatre, wirelessly driven by 52 D4 drivers and controlled from 3 x 8 button panels. The finished installation has created energy savings of 90% over the Savoy Theatre s previous lighting system as well as providing the smooth dimming curve that is so crucial to the theatrical experience. The new lighting installation delivers on both the visual grandeur and trendsetting tradition of the theatre s long history. Approach White Light worked with manufacturers GDS to develop the final system for the project. The plan involved the creation of a brand-new product: the ArcLamp. These 4W LED candle lamps replace 40-60W tungsten candle lamps in the Savoy Theatre with both clear and frosted types in use. Areas originally lit with cold-cathode tubing (ceiling edges and overhead light boxes) also got an LED makeover with LED strips connected by GDS Wireless Constant Voltage Drivers. 3 4

4 EE Live: Brand Launch for 15,000 Employees Interactive Experiences Connect Brand & Guests EE Limited Production Company WRG Venue NEC Birmingham Deliver lighting for immersive brand experience event, incorporating EE s new brand visuals and core values Interactive, cohesive, and fun -- all keeping with the brand values and image White Light was tapped to provide lighting for a unique brand experience event the internal launch of EE s new name and customer brand to its nearly 15,000 UK employees. The single EE brand brings together two communications brands, Orange and T-Mobile, under one EE roof. With the event, known as EE Live, the UK s largest communications company invited employees from across the UK to the NEC Birmingham for an introduction to the branding and vision of the new mobile and broadband provider. In the spirit of innovative technologies, the event was an interactive experience, immersing employees in all things 4G and uniting them under the look, feel, and vision of the new EE brand. Using this experience, EE aimed to engage employees in the playful, purposeful and fun image that the company carries throughout its corporate and retail interfaces. White Light Project Manager Richard Saunders oversaw planning and completion of the event s extensive lighting systems. Produced by WRG, the event incorporated several experience zones spread across two halls at the NEC Birmingham Hall 2 (for the employee brand experience) and Hall 3A (for manager training). Planning & Approach The team approached EE Live in sections, identifying key areas first and tying them together with light. Using a variety of fixtures, the lighting design covered areas including: Speed, Science, Coverage, Brand, and Commitment. Richard Saunders explained: The key was blending all of the different experience areas into one strong aesthetic to represent the EE brand. Colour and texture were important in establishing a fun atmosphere that encouraged participation, while also unifying the entire experience for visitors. Reaction It was a pleasure to work with White Light on this project. We were very impressed with standard of excellence achieved, especially on an event of this magnitude. The professionalism of the White Light team and the quality of their work is second to none. Claudia Connelly Senior Production Manager at WRG Solution White Light supplied more than 100 moving light fixtures for the event spaces, including a performance area. The experience areas required special effects including fibre optic, UV, and LED lighting. One experience area had the White Light team using a brand new product the X Pixel from manufacturer SGM to create a map showing worldwide communication coverage. With the new product, the team was able to individually control each LED pixel, allowing the team to easily and accurately achieve the desired effects. 5 6

State of the Art, Energy Efficient, Multi-Use Venue Spaces 337-seat Theatre 120 m² Drama Studio 100 m² Dance Studio Technical Facilities Drama Department with 3 Classrooms Art Gallery Space Coffee Bar & Social Areas With outdated 1960 s architecture and facilities in need of major repairs, The Leys School in Cambridge, one of England s premier independent schools, embarked on its latest development project to replace its existing theatre structure with a newly constructed. The purpose-built venue includes new performance spaces, social areas, and educational classrooms designed with the high standard of excellence that appears throughout the Leys School campus. On the project, White Light was tasked with supplying the new venue with systems for lighting and sound, including power distribution, data distribution, control consoles, and facility panels. The team from White Light, headed up by Project Manager Tony Coates, worked with architects Bland, Brown, and Cole, and theatre consultants Charcoalblue to complete the venue for the start of the 2013 school year. From The Leys, outgoing Headmaster Mark Slater detailed the project s vision while Austin Jessop served as Project Manager. Teachers and staff from the Leys were involved at every level of the project, helping determine key features, essential for the venue s everyday functions. For the school s new theatre spaces, Theatre Manager Paul Durose was able to detail hanging products and system layouts based on how the space would eventually be used. State of the Art The three new performance spaces were specified to the highest professional standard. This provides students with a quality learning experience and ensures that facilities are up to the grade for visiting professionals. White Light installed 49 custom-built facility panels from Doughty Engineering, a Unison system with touch screen house light control from Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC), and theatrical control consoles, also from ETC, all on par with professional theatres across the UK and around the world. Multi-Purpose The brings together social areas, performance venues, and new kinds of teaching spaces. To achieve this, White Light installed custom lighting, electrical, and control systems throughout that allow for increased versatility. Multi-purpose LED house lighting allows for the main theatre space to function as an all-school auditorium, performance venue, and examination hall while ladder-free access to technical areas accommodates both staff and students, turning these spaces into hands-on learning areas. Energy Efficient For optimum energy efficiency, White Light installed more than 200 high-quality, low impact overhead and backstage LED units from UK manufacturer GDS. LED light sources are more energy efficient, produce less heat, and have a significantly greater lamp life than traditional tungsten sources. Dimmable white sources provide bright, even lighting for the auditorium and public spaces while dimmable blue LEDs in backstage areas offer safe, visible lighting without interfering with performances. Reaction The Leys is an inspiring space for pupils, students, and visitors. The project revamping Sky studios 4 and 5 for the new football season involved combining the two spaces with a new layout and design concept. The idea was to bring Sky s entire Saturday football programming under one roof literally! said Iain Davidson, Lighting Director at Sky, who oversaw the lighting installation on the project. Sky Sports always like to push the boundaries and give you a challenge. Based on the idea of combining the spaces, designer Toby Kalitowski created a large organic roof piece for the space that straddled both studios. This would serve as the main presentation area for Sky Sports programmes Saturday Night Football and Match Choice. Iain worked closely with White Light s Jonathan Haynes on the installation which posed two unique challenges. Firstly, the large roof piece designed to bring the spaces together had blocked half of the existing lighting hanging positions in the studio. Secondly, the production design called for 5 large front-projection screens, meaning managing light levels and spill would be a top priority. Lighting for Stadium & Studio It was agreed that the header, which was made to look like a stadium roof, would be accompanied by practical units that could be rigged and de-rigged every week. We wanted these fixtures to look like stadium lights, but function like studio lights, said Iain. They needed to be durable, have the right appearance on camera, and offer tight beam control. Pulsar Chromascape AR111 fixtures were chosen to fit the bill. The high brightness LED units come in stainless steel housing and consume just 17W per fixture. Complete Solution After consultation and product trials White Light provided Pulsar Chromascape LED fixtures to cover the studio space overhead, CORE Lighting LED uplighters for flexible colour options, Robe 300 LED washes for added depth and ETC Source4 Mini profiles as special highlights. The lighting rig was installed in the summer of 2013 and was ready in time for the new football season. The new set is in use across several Sky Sports programmes including FL72, Sportswomen, Dumbledore s Office Weekend Warmup, and Saturday Night Football. Adding Colour, Wirelessly For the floor units, light quality and colour range were key considerations but the units also needed to look good on camera. The new design setup would also have to allow for a studio audience, making safety a key concern. CORE Lighting Colour Point LED uplighters were chosen for the task. The battery operated units are wirelessly controlled, making for fast set up time and no cabling. The sleek looking uplighters fit perfectly with the studio s new design and are easily adapted for different programmes. 9 10

7 Creating Selfridges Destination Christmas Immersive Light Show for a Crowd of Thousands Selfridges Venue Selfridges Oxford Street, London Production Partners setworks - Production Management Two Foxes - Staging Pre-Rigging: 1 week Installation: 14 hours on the day Deliver lighting design and production for music showcase and Oxford St Christmas light switch on Festive, playful, spectacular In 2013, Selfridges Oxford Street invited the public to join in a spectacular Christmas celebration event which included high profile performances, a Destination Christmas countdown, and the switch on of Oxford Street s annual Christmas light decorations. The event brought in a crowd of thousands, with performances by popular British artists Jessie J, Conor Maynard, and James Arthur. Selfridges trusted entertainment lighting specialist White Light to provide lighting equipment, design, and support for the evening. Creative production company setworks oversaw the production of the project, which involved transforming Selfridges prominent Oxford St façade into a full scale live performance space including trussing and staging for the Destination Christmas performers. London-based artist Chris Bracey created a custom Destination Christmas neon sign for the event. With this as inspiration, the team worked to incorporate the artwork s pop of colour and brightness into the design for the staging area and the building s architecture. They wanted to create an immersive light show to impact viewers along the entire street, not just those with a view of the stage. To do that, White Light Project Manager Richard Stirzaker combined the existing architectural lighting system with a versatile temporary lighting rig - adding vibrant and colourful layers for something truly unique. Challenge The immersive light show required combining several lighting elements as well as working with an outdoor public site that had limited traffic free access time. With a tight 20 minute pre-show window, off-site preparation was essential. Event lighting was pre-rigged at White Light s facilities in Wimbledon and then synchronised with the existing system on-site. A week before the launch, the team also set up a complete night-time dress rehearsal miles away to get the look just right. Reaction It never ceases to amaze me how well the White Light team responds in any situation. Richard and the team worked across several programming systems and with a very difficult stage dimension and viewing angle to consider, and it turned out beautifully! When it comes to being on site: the flawless project management, skill, and dedication of the team make the most challenging projects possible. Maria Katehis Director, setworks Solution The lighting crew worked overnight shifts to install, program, and test the lighting on-site, putting in more than 200 working hours on the project in total. 7.2 tonnes of lighting equipment was provided for the event including more than 100 additional lighting fixtures. White Light worked closely with Production Manager Mark Berry and Technical Manager Jon Ricketts to ensure the event s success. Lighting Designer Andy Pygott, Elton John s regular LD, determined the lighting plan for the stage to be consistent with the look and feel of previous Elton John performances. Lighting Designer Quentin Jarman looked after the design for Katherine Jenkins concert, held the following night, using the same lighting rig. The large scale event, which hosted more than 5,000 guests, was the first of its kind for the venue that functions as a country club, hotel, and spa. Stoke Country Club is widely considered one of the top 100 golf courses in the world. Set amongst 300 acres of lush greenery, the stage for the concert was placed atop the club s grass tennis courts, nestled between the trees. The challenges presented by this unique venue, the unprecedented nature of the event, and tight turn-around deadlines were all met with the help of equipment and support from White Light. Planning & Approach Planning for the project began six months ahead of the event. Once we received the list from Andy, our first call was to White Light. With this scale of an event and the quality that was expected, no other company came close. Having worked with White Light and having been to their facilities, I trusted the team completely to deliver the kit and the support that we needed. I was not disappointed. Where others lose quality at this size and speed, White Light delivered. The equipment was in exceptional condition and performed really well. The package included Philips Vari-lite VL3000Q and VL3500 FX Wash, Clay Paky Sharpy, and Martin Professional Mac 101 fixtures overstage. Followspots were Robert Juliat Aramis units while haze came from Look Solutions Unique 2.0 hazers. The rig was controlled by a Grand MA console

9 Magical Transformation from Studio to Exhibit Built to Last: Durable, Low-Energy Solutions Warner Brothers Studios Project Designer Thinkwell Group UK White Light Installation: 6 Months on-site Deliver lighting for Thinkwell Group s design of a new interactive visitor attraction. Originally used to shoot the Harry Potter series of films, the studio spaces were transformed to showcase on-set artefacts, exhibits, and interactive activities for visitors. Durable, efficient, and easy to maintain permanent lighting systems Value of Contract 1.8 Million With The Making of Harry Potter studio tour, Warner Brothers Studios in London wanted to bring to life the magical world of the well-known film franchise by showcasing a vast selection of original props, costumes, and sets used in the production of the film series. The immersive experience takes visitors through all of the iconic film scenes allowing mere muggles to stroll down Diagon Alley, enter the of Hogwarts and take a peek inside of Dumbledore s office. For the project one of the largest visitor attractions around London White Light supplied and installed lighting equipment and control systems for the 150,000 square ft. studio space which features displays, interactive areas, and more than 100 minutes of new media. White Light, led by Projects Director Simon Needle, worked with design consultancy Thinkwell Group UK from planning stages through to opening day and beyond. White Light continues to provide oncall technical support for The Making of Harry Potter as well as conducting regular on-site maintenance, ensuring the design s creative integrity and functional operation. Challenge Transforming the original studio space into a longterm exhibition meant planning a complete system from the ground up, starting with power and data infrastructure, before selecting control equipment and lighting fixtures. The attraction would be open to the public most days, with long hours and little room for unscheduled maintenance. Preserving the quality of artefacts on display was also a key concern. For these reasons the new system would need to have a long life span, be easy to maintain, and produce as little heat as possible. Solution White Light supplied more than 200 Leader Light Stage Wash AW units as well as Altman SpectraPar and Par38 units, all with LED sources. 80 exterior Martin 400 series LED moving head fixtures were installed across the venue s exterior spaces. To highlight more specific details, 200 Source Four HID Profile fixtures were provided. These high intensity units provide an additional 10,000 hours of lamp life per unit. Each of these choices contributed to savings in energy use and maintenance time across the Dumbledore s exhibit. Office Approach To address these challenges, White Light suggested a variety of lighting fixtures including those fitted with long-life HID lamps or energysaving LED sources. By using energy efficient sources where possible, we were able to help the venue save on energy costs, reduce heat levels, and decrease maintenance intervals - meaning that the exhibition lighting will provide the same look and feel for years after opening. Continued Service Since its opening in March of 2013, The Making of Harry Potter brings in more than 5,000 visitors daily. To keep the exhibit looking its very best, Warner Brothers trusts White Light for continued support. White Light Technical Service teams visit the site regularly to maintain the lighting systems and make any necessary repairs. The company s latest season features not only new productions, but new lighting technology to help each story shine. A fleet of new moving lights and control equipment will light up productions including The Tin Forest and The James Plays for 2014 and beyond. Heading into the summer, Paul Claydon Head of Lighting at the National Theatre Scotland began looking for additions to the theatre company s permanent stocks. He worked with White Light to determine the right mix of equipment, based on the key requirements of flexibility and touring endurance. For lighting, the choice was Martin Professional fixtures Mac Viper Performance and Mac Aura models, which were put to use almost immediately. The units arrived and flew out the door onto several productions over our busy summer season, he said. In addition to new lighting equipment, the National Theatre Scotland also invested in a new ETC Gio control desk. Filling out the new purchase with cases, cables, and networking accessories White Light was able to deliver a complete lighting solution to keep the company s productions looking great throughout this and future seasons. The whole process was great and we are very happy, said Claydon. Challenge With no permanent performance space, National Theatre Scotland productions are often on the road nationally and internationally, meaning any new kit would have to stand up to the pressures of constant touring. The new lighting fixtures would also need to offer versatile looks and features to suit the company s varied range of productions with designs from visiting lighting designers. Other key concerns were size and weight, as well as power consumption and noise levels. Reaction The team at White Light was very helpful in selecting products. They were efficient, knowledgeable, and most importantly they understood exactly how we were going to use the kit. The widely popular bill featured the two superstar bands, along with musical guest Thunder, together in concert for the first time ever in the UK. For the tour, which opened in Belfast and finished in London, White Light worked closely with Production Manager Rob Kern and Lighting Designer Kevin Deuce Christopher, supplying a full production service including lighting fixtures, cabling, rigging, and power distribution. The 9 venue tour in the UK is a continuation of Journey s worldwide tour with previous stops in North America, New Zealand, Japan, and Singapore earlier this year. Christopher, who has been the touring LD for Journey since 2004, worked with White Light s Head of Concert Touring Lester Cobrin to adjust the lighting requirements for the UK tour. In addition to equipment, White Light also supplied the production with an experienced touring lighting crew, ensuring the technical quality of the rig on the road. It was great to work with Lester and the White Light team, Christopher said. They were efficient and responsive. It made for a smooth run in the UK. Challenge For the design, Christopher layered multiple lighting elements along with video effects to create a variety of colourful, dimensional looks over the course of Journey s dynamic performance. When deciding on fixtures and layout for the touring rig, he explains, the goal is always to expand the space with as little equipment as possible. The ideal lighting rig is one that travels small but once it is up, can completely fill the space. White Light was very helpful in delivering the right equipment and support to make that happen. Reaction I have been very pleased with the whole lighting package from White Light. The equipment has been great and the crew has been a pleasure to work with. Kevin Christopher Lighting Designer, Journey Solutions Philips Vari-lite VL3000Q and VL3500 Wash units were used to form the backbone of the overstage rig, with additional Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures for an extra punch of brightness and colour. The Sharpys are great very bright and importantly, lightweight. They were perfect to add an extra layer of dimension to the show, Christopher said. The Sharpy units were also a good complement to the VLs which I have been using for years. I chose both because I knew they would stand up to the brightness of our video elements

White Light provided technical production for the large-scale event, working alongside event design company Private Drama. The event welcomed more than 400 guests for a drinks reception hosted in the venue s main atrium and surrounding galleries. The evening also included a special theatrical performance which incorporated stories from the IWM s collection of more than 400 artefacts and artworks. The museum reopened to the public after a major 40 million redevelopment. With 2014 marking 100 years since the start of World War I, the museum s redesigned spaces will bring stories of the war to life for a new generation of visitors. Integrating the collection was very much a part of the brief for the event, said White Light Project Manager Richard Stirzaker. We worked closely with the entire creative team to integrate every element lighting, staging, sound into the story-telling. Preparations for the event began three days prior, with the White Light team pre-rigging at the company s space in Wimbledon. The team arrived on-site on Tuesday and worked throughout the day setting up equipment, including more than 100 lighting fixtures. Wednesday, the team had on-site rehearsal before the final event Thursday night. Reaction The White Light team was very professional and helpful throughout the planning and delivery of the event. They were able to manage all obstacles that arose in delivering an event with such a large production in a newly transformed museum. The whole team was a pleasure to work with.
