2 Baby Boomers and Substance Abuse Treatment 1 Introduction The term Baby Boomer refers to those in the generation born between 1946 and Although there are many cultural definitions but it is broadly used to describe a person during the post World War II period, when so many Americans were born after a return from service in the war front. Many studies have been conducted by different agencies reading baby boomers and substance abuse, they all point to one common conclusion: drug use amongst baby boomers is increasing. It is estimated that by 2020 the over-55 age group will account for more than half the entire population of United States i. According to a recent survey conducted by Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), over three million people in their 50 s had used illegal drugs and the number is expected to double by Many in this generation consider substance abuse as recreational activity and they have historically had high rates of substance abuse, starting in the 1960 s. Studies support link between substance use in early life and addiction problem in later years. The graph below depicts the increase in drug use in this age group over the past years.
3 Baby Boomers and Substance Abuse Treatment 2 Detailed statistics show that majority of people over 50 years of age admitted for addiction treatment lie in the 50 to 54 years age group according to 2005 survey conducted by SAMHSA. Source: 2005 SAMHSA Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS). As per details on the primary substance of abuse, alcohol has been prevalent amongst the 50 plus age group and the highest proportions of admissions reporting alcohol as the primary substance were among those aged 65 to 69 and 70 or older. It also point to the fact that many in this generation are addicted to other substances as well. 4 Baby Boomers and Substance Abuse Treatment 3 Addiction Treatment Requirements It is evident from the statistics that the demographic is in need for addiction treatment services on a larger scale. And according to a study by Federal SAMHSA along with North Carolina s Research Triangle Institute, by year 2020, 4.4 million older adults are expected to be in need of treatment for substance abuse. The current addiction treatment services are not well equipped to handle the volume of older adult addiction. Moreover, the present services and treatments focus more on the young adults and middle aged generation and thus highlight the fact that little attention has been paid to addiction disorders amongst the elderly. Older adults are bound to have different symptoms than younger ones; they are also more likely to be mentally and physically sensitive, hence requiring more intensive care to withdraw from substances and more intense and longer counseling services to help them heal. Many baby boomers also suffer from depression related to feeling aimless and lost sense of purpose and have troubles coping with retirement. Thus there is a need to understand the character of this generation before effective care and treatment can be provided. The baby boomer generation, unlike their predecessors, is not reluctant to discuss substance use issues. This generation primarily values creativity, expression and freedom. Any treatment is effective only if the client is involved in the process. Baby boomers must be engaged in decisions and understand the value of therapy, making it an effective recovery process.
