Essentially, while a high school student, you can take some college classes or start a technical program. Each will give you a head start in your higher education goals while still at high school. The Kansas Board of Regents will pay for the tuition so that students can gain the training needed to enter a profession, and in many cases, earn an industry-recognized credential. Students will need to purchase textbooks and may incur some small fees (tools, background checks as required, supplies, etc.). Enrollment Process Look through this guide and determine which CTE program best meets your educational and career goals. Discuss CTE program options with your high school counselor. Complete Cowley College Application form. This is found online at Complete the assessment for Cowley College and meet GPA requirements to enter college. To complete the assessment, contact the Student Services office at any of our Cowley College locations. Send all high school transcripts to the Admissions office at the main campus. Complete the Cowley College CAPSS release which you can obtain from the high school counselor. It will require the principal s signature. Bring completed documents to Cowley College to get enrolled. 3 Academic College Classes While a High School Student Cowley College provides opportunities to qualified high school students through its CAPSS (Concurrent Academic Partnership for Secondary Students) program, whereas students can enroll in college courses and earn college credit prior to graduating from high school. Many high schools allow the credit earned to also count towards high school graduation requirements. Students must pay tuition but it is a process where one can get a head start at college. In order to promote student success and provide a positive first-time college experience, admission guidelines have been established. Students must be a sophomore, junior or senior in standing, meet minimum grade point average and reading levels, and obtain permission from the high school principal to participate. In addition, Math and English coursework also require college-level performance in writing and math assessments. Career and Technical Education programs require some additional documentation of a student s performance in their application process. What is the CAPSS program? CAPSS (Concurrent Academic Partnership for Secondary Students) is a program that provides an opportunity for qualified high school students to take advantage of academic college courses and earn college credit prior to graduating from high school. The CTE programs follow a different set of admission guidelines. What is the advantage of taking College courses while in high school? Students are able to get an early start on their college career and earn college credit at an affordable price. Often it will keep students from extending their time at a more costly four-year institution. Can any high school student enroll in college courses? What are the admission guidelines for the CAPSS program? To be eligible to enroll in a general education course a student must: 1) Be a high school sophomore, junior, or senior, or a gifted 9th grade student. 2) Hold a minimum high school cumulative G.P.A. of 2.75 on a four-point scale. 3) Meet minimum reading assessment guidelines. (ACT reading score of 18 or equivalent proficiency on COMPASS assessment instrument.) 4) Meet additional assessment requirements for Math & English courses. 5) Complete a CAPSS enrollment form and obtain the high school principal s signature on the appropriate line granting permission to enroll in college courses. No, there are admission guidelines that have been put into place to help promote student success and provide a positive first-time college experience. Students must be a sophomore, junior, or senior, or a 9th grade student who is classified as gifted with a current Individual Education Plan (IEP) that indicates the student is ready for Collegelevel coursework. In addition, minimum G.P.A. and reading levels are required for all academic courses, and English and Math courses require college-level performance on writing and math assessments

4 Where can students take advantage of Cowley College courses? a) College Campus Classes: Courses taught on a Cowley campus or outreach site by Cowley full-time or part-time instructors b) Distance Learning Delivery: Courses delivered via Distance Learning methods (Interactive Video [ITV], or elearning program [Online Hybrid, or Online]. c) Concurrent Enrollment Partnership (CEP) Site: Courses taught in area high schools during the school day utilizing qualified high school instructors. In order for a high school to serve as a CEP site, a Memorandum of Understanding must be established between the College and the School District. What courses can high school students enroll in? Although CAPSS students may enroll in any academic course that the College offers towards an Associate s Degree, the following are some of the most common courses students take advantage of, which transfer without issues within the Regents system. Statistics 3 credits COM 2711 Public Speaking 3 credits ENG 2211 Composition I 3 credits ENG 2212 Composition II 3 credits PSY 6711 General Psychology 3 credits SOC 6811 Principles of Sociology 3 credits Is there a limit to the number of hours a CAPSS student can take? Yes. While a participant in the CAPSS program, a student will be expected to maintain part-time student status, which means they are enrolled in fewer than 12 credit hours per semester. Occasionally, an exception will apply to this rule. Any student wishing to enroll in 12 or more hours in a semester is required to obtain prior approval from the Vice President of Academic Affairs at Cowley College. Can the college credit that s earned be transferred to another institution? Yes. Cowley College has transfer agreements with the Regents Universities in Kansas, many area private institutions, as well as other four-year institutions in surrounding states. How Cowley College courses transfer is established by the fouryear institutions, which have guidelines outlining how previous college credit earned will be applied to the student s program of study. To answer specific transfer questions, it is best to check directly with the institution where the student plans to transfer or work with a Cowley academic advisor. (Janice Stover at Cowley College, stover@cowley.edu) How do the college credits that have been earned through the CAPSS program get transferred to another institution? After the course grades have been recorded on the student s official Cowley transcript, the student must complete a Transcript Request Form through the Cowley Student Services office. A processing fee of $6.00 per transcript applies. Once this step is completed, a student s official transcript is sent to the designated institution where the transcript is evaluated and appropriate credit is applied to the student s academic record at that institution. What does a student need to provide to the College in order to be enrolled for classes? The College must receive the following for each student: a) A completed CAPSS enrollment form with Principal s signature b) An official copy of their current High School transcript reflecting GPA or confirmation of GPA from High School counselor on the CAPSS form. c) A copy of qualifying ACT test scores or completion of a Cowley assessment d) Full payment of tuition and fees Where can students take the necessary assessment tests? Students may take the ACT on one of the National test dates scheduled on Saturdays periodically throughout the year. If students have not taken the ACT, they may take one of the assessment tests provided by Cowley College. Many area high schools offer on-site assessment opportunities provided by Cowley College. Check with your high school counselor to see if your school participates in this testing option. Students may also schedule an appointment to test at the Cowley main campus by contacting the admissions office at (620) ; the Mulvane Bloomenshine Center at (316) [430 E. Main Mulvane]; at the Cowley Wichita Eastside Center at (316) [4900 E. Pawnee Suite 107]; or at the Cowley Wichita Westside Center at (316) [8815 West 13th St. Suite 160]. When do students enroll for classes? Personnel from the College visit many of the area high schools to enroll students at the beginning of each semester. Students can also enroll at the main campus or at one of the Cowley College enrollment centers. Students should check with their high school counselor to see if enrollment will take place at their high school. How do students obtain the necessary textbooks? Students are expected to purchase their own copy of the course textbook, unless otherwise provided by their school district. Many of the outlying high schools choose to have personnel from Cowley visit their site at the start of the Fall and Spring semesters to sell textbooks and enroll students. Students may also purchase their textbooks directly at the Sid Regnier bookstore located at 207 West Fifth Avenue on the main campus in Arkansas City or the Wichita Eastside Location. 5 What does it cost to take courses? The student will be responsible for paying the College the current rate of tuition and fees per credit hour as outlined by College Policy. The current rates are published in the current course schedule, on the Cowley College website, or can be obtained from your high school counselor. Tuition is $59 plus fees of $27 per credit hour, which total $86.00 per credit hour. ($258 for a 3 credit hour course) Cowley County residents obtain a tuition break of $10.00 per credit hour. These fees are subject to change with approval and adoption from the Cowley College Board of Trustees. Some face-to-face and online courses may have additional fees. Can students obtain scholarships and federal financial aid for tuition and fees for the college classes while they are concurrently enrolled in high school? No. State law and federal guidlines only allows scholarships and federal financial aid to be provided to high school graduates. What payment options are available if a student can t afford to pay tuition, fees, and book costs at the time of enrollment? Cowley College provides the opportunity for students to take advantage of a budget tuition management plan called e-cashier, which charges a minimal non-refundable service fee per semester. This interest-free payment plan allows students or parents to authorize automatic bank withdrawals from a banking account, or charge monthly payments to a credit card. Students can register for the e- Cashier program online at Informational forms may also be available from your high school counselor. How do students find out their current grades in their College courses? Each Cowley student is created an identification number and provided access to log into Campus Connect, the student information system. Through Campus Connect, students can view academic information such as their grades, schedules, unofficial transcripts and other pertinent information. Information on accessing Campus Connect is provided to students at the time of enrollment or through their instructor. Will parents have access to the student s College academic progress? If the student provides their parents with their access information, a parent can access the student information via Campus Connect, or the student can sign a release to grant permission for College personnel to discuss their progress with a parent. As part of the CAPSS enrollment form, however, students do sign a permission form that allows the College to communicate student performance information to personnel at their high schools. Additional Information: While a participant in the CAPSS program, concurrent students are officially registered as students of Cowley College and classified as non-degree seeking students. The academic credit granted for college course work successfully completed by the student shall qualify for College credit. Credit will be recorded on the student s official academic record of the College. At the discretion of the high school, course work may simultaneously qualify for high school credit. The Cowley student handbook and catalog will serve as the official rules of record, which govern student activity in admission, enrollment, course work, and behavior. Who is the Cowley College contact person for the CAPSS Program? In most schools, the high school counselor serves as the contact person to answer student s questions. 6 HIGH SCHOOL REQUIREMENTS FOR HYBRID/ONLINE CNA CLASS The Certified Nursing Assistant course is a great opportunity for students to obtain an introduction to the health care profession with hands-on experience. The CNA certificate is a pre-requisite for most nursing programs. With recent Kansas legislation, students can enroll in the 5 credit hour CNA course, tuition free. Attaining the CNA certificate would qualify a student to work in a long-term care facility or hospital and provide a possible part-time job opportunity throughout their college career. Course overview: The class is taught as an online hybrid course. This means a portion of the class is taught online plus faceto-face clinical and labs on-site in Mulvane or Winfield. In addition to the online instruction time, the class consists of 20 hours of lab and 25 hours of clinical time. Lab and Clinical time will normally be scheduled on Saturday and/or Sunday or may be on a week day when high schools may not be in session. High School CNA courses are completed in one semester. Fall semester classes normally begin in August and end in November/December. Spring classes normally begin in January and end in April. Class size is limited to 12 students and there must be at least 7 students in a class for it to be held. The nursing coordinator may visit the site or provide instructions over the IDL system to get the students started. Communication will come mainly from s and phone calls once initial orientation has been completed. The Instructor will not be on site at the school other than the initial visit so there would need to be an appointed school facilitator to monitor the student s online class time. Student Requirements: Junior or Senior status (Seniors are given priority) Minimum High School GPA of 2.5 ACT reading score of 18 or higher or COMPASS assessment reading score of at least 63 Complete admissions application to Cowley Submit CAPSS form with appropriate signatures Complete elearning orientation prior to start of class Additional requirements: Provide copies of student ID (driver s license) and Social Security Card Complete application to test (state test) Obtain two-step TB test Submit HEP B form Complete required background check per instructions from instructor Tuition and Fees Due to recent CTE legislation, high school students are not responsible to pay tuition and student fees associated with the CNA, HHA, and CMA courses. (normally $86 per credit hour.) 7 AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY Associate of Applied Science Degree The motor vehicle repair industry has taken on a new sophistication and requires advanced technical training, strong communication skills, computer literacy, and electrical/electronics skills. Graduates of our Automotive Technology program may become service managers, service engineers, automotive writers, automotive instructors, parts and service technicians, and business owners. Involvement Opportunities For students in the industrial technology field, the Skills USA club offers leadership and competitive opportunities at the state, regional, and national level. You will find lathes, milling machines, precisiongrinding equipment and many other machine tools, all of which are state-ofthe-art design. Many of our machines are computercontrolled; you have the opportunity to learn computer numerical controlled programming of these machines for complex and sophisticated machining processes. You ll also learn quality control methods using the latest measuring and inspection instrumentation. With this type of equipment, you are able to produce aerospace-quality projects. Industry support has made it possible to take classes on field trips which give greater dimension to the student experience Involvement Opportunities For students in the industrial technology field, the Skills USA club offers leadership and competitive opportunities at the state, regional, and national level. You will develop the knowledge and skills you need to perform sophisticated testing techniques that are required in many industries. Upon completion of this program you will be prepared to develop and maintain quality control programs. Students will be trained to set up and calibrate equipment, as well as interpret and evaluate results based upon nondestructive testing methods with respect to applicable codes, standards, and specifications. Students will have the skills necessary to become inspection technicians and will be prepared for the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) certification examination. Involvement Opportunities For students in the industrial technology field, the Skills USA club offers leadership and competitive opportunities at the state, regional, and national level. 11 WELDING TECHNOLOGY Associate of Applied Science Degree Welding is the most common way of permanently joining metal parts. In this process, heat is applied to metal pieces, melting and fusing them to form a permanent bond. Because of its strength, welding is used in shipbuilding, automobile manufacturing and repair, aerospace applications, and thousands of other manufacturing activities. Welding also is used to join beams when constructing buildings, bridges, and other structures and to join pipes in pipelines, power plants, and refineries. There are over 80 different welding processes that a welder can employ. Some are performed manually, and the work is entirely controlled by the welder. Others are semiautomatic, and the welder uses machinery, such as a wire feeder, to perform welding tasks. Welding has grown significantly over the long term because of advances that have allowed it to replace other joining technologies in many applications. Thus, demand for welders is increasing in the construction, manufacturing, and utilities industries. Manual, semiautomatic, and automatic processes using oxy fuel and arc welding processes in SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and plasma are covered. Advanced courses deal with application of welding codes to develop the expertise needed to understand specifications used in industry. Training is done on both structural and piping materials in mild steel, stainless, and aluminum alloys. Program graduates typically find employment as welding technicians, robotic welding technicians, and technical sales representatives. As such, they are responsible for one or more of the following: welding metal alloys, fabricating metals to specifications, troubleshooting faulty weldments, writing procedures, interpreting conventional and computer-aided prints, and selling and servicing equipment. 12 EMT Associate of Applied Science Degree The purpose of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course is to provide students with an academic and working knowledge to become state certified and to provide basic life support patient care. It provides the basic concepts of emergency care which are needed to function as an EMT. This class will be helpful for other healthcare fields and is a prerequisite for the Paramedic course. The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides basic life support care to critically ill or injured patients. EMTs work directly with another EMT to provide this level of care and in conjunction with a paramedic to provide advanced life support. EMTs learn to manage an airway using artificial devices, assess the severity of illness or injury, manage wounds and bleeding, immobilize fractures, perform CPR, utilized an automated defibrillator and a host of other procedures. Recent curriculum changes at the national and state level allow EMTs to assist with the administration of some medications. EMTs are entry-level EMS providers. They are essential in the EMS chain of survival. Additionally, one must become a certified EMT before entering the paramedic program. Academic and Class Highlights The EMT student will be provided an excellent education! The college will follow guidelines established by the Kansas Board of EMS and the US Department of Transportation. This class is offered each semester. Many of the EMT courses utilize a hybrid (part online, part on-ground) format that is an extremely convenient and effective course delivery method. The class involves one semester of time where students complete classroom, laboratory, and EMS internship sessions. Some weekend and extra sessions are required during the course. The course schedule is distributed at the first class meeting. A total of 24 hours of EMS internship time is required (acquired outside of class time), and proof of immunizations must be on file prior to the start of the EMS internship. Actual patient contact is provided during the class. The class will be primarily taught by one teacher, though many experts in the medical community will assist the students. Equipment found in the classroom is state-of-art and is the same type that is used by EMS services throughout the nation. Career Opportunities Health services are one of the fastest growing job areas in the United States. Many fire and police departments require their personnel to gain this certification. In addition to working in the pre-hospital setting, some EMTs work in hospital emergency departments, offshore refineries, occupational medicine and movie sets. Demand for EMTs and paramedics continue to grow. Successful completion of the Cowley EMT class can be an excellent entry point into one of the most dynamic and fastest growing careers of our time. Child Care and Development (Early Childhood Education) Associate of Applied Science Degree The child care development program at Cowley College consists of an AAS Degree in Child Care & Development (Early Childhood Education). This degree is recommended for those who prefer to work with children from birth through age eight in a child care and development setting, such as in-home child care or a child care facility. The AAS degree is also recommended for those who are seeking an upper level position within child care such as director of a center. Early Childhood Education is a field of study that concentrates on the development and education of children from birth through age eight. The AAS Degree program is focused on providing students with a well-rounded approach to child care for the purpose of working in a daycare setting. Curriculum outcomes address practice, research and theory in the field. It includes such areas as interacting with the young children, creating developmentally appropriate curriculum and activities, behavior management, benefits of communication and collaboration and constructing effective and safe learning environments. COURSE OFFERINGS To work in an early childhood or daycare facility in Kansas, it is recommended students complete the Associate of Applied Science degree with specifically focuses on theories and practices for working with infants and preschool aged children. Those looking to become a childcare or daycare facility director should complete an associate s degree and then work toward a bachelors degree within five years of completing the associate degree to meet accreditations standards. The Associate of Applied Science degree will not allow individuals to become licensed to teach in a public PreK-6 school (students should pursue a degree in Elementary Education as their first step towards teaching.)
