Why Consider Landmark s Summer Program for High School Students? Is your teenager: Studying, but not retaining information? Starting assignments, but unable to finish them? Struggling in some or all classes? Finding the increasing demands of high school and precollege courses to be more of a challenge than expected? If you are concerned about your teen s future performance in high school and college, our acclaimed summer programs may offer the support your son or daughter needs. WHAT PARENTS SAY The Landmark College High School Summer Program has made a positive and palpable difference in my daughter s self-esteem. The daughter we picked up from the program had become more mature in a mere three weeks. It was one of her best learning experiences ever and has helped her both academically and emotionally to prepare for college. Landmark College is the college of choice for students with language-based learning disabilities (such as dyslexia), ADHD, and ASD. We have nearly 30 years of leadership in developing innovative academic strategies and techniques for students who learn differently and more than 10 years of experience in providing high school students with a taste of college through our targeted summer programs. We focus on helping rising juniors and seniors who want to become more effective and independent learners by: Building academic performance through specific skill and strategy development in small, personalized classes that will help them to prepare for what they ll experience at the college level Introducing them to the concepts of self-understanding and self-advocacy in a college-like setting 1

Located in rural southern Vermont, Landmark College is internationally renowned for its innovative and successful programs for students who learn differently. According to Princeton Review s K&W Guide, Simply put, Landmark College knows how to serve students who learn differently better than any other place on earth. 2

About Our High School Summer Program Traditional Track Sunday, July 12 Saturday, August 1 Social Pragmatics Track Friday, July 10 Saturday, August 1 Now in its 11th year, Landmark College s High School Summer Program immerses students in a structured, college-based learning and living experience. The faculty includes members of Landmark s teaching faculty, as well as local high school teachers who are specifically chosen for their extensive experience in assisting students to become more independent and effective learners. A specialized Social Pragmatics Track is available for students who have strong academic potential, but who struggle with social pragmatics (see page 5 for details). Students in this track follow the same schedule as and share many activities with participants in the traditional High School Summer Program, but also participate in programming designed specifically for their needs and interests. Also on campus during this program will be current Landmark College students and visiting college students, who will be taking college-level credit courses as part of a summer session. The social skills and the pre-college experience were invaluable. 3

Designed to challenge students with serious academic work, the High School Summer Program allows students to: Gain exposure to effective writing techniques Identify strategies for success in school Collaborate with peers Connect with adults who care Begin to better understand themselves The program s structure enables our faculty and residential life staff to consider what challenges individual students may encounter in a true college atmosphere. Our faculty and staff are focused on providing students with experiences in and out of the classroom that will better prepare them for college studies, and allow them to try out new, more productive behaviors in a safe, non-threatening environment. Our goal is to help students be successful in their future educational pursuits. PROGRAM BENEFITS Our summer faculty and staff will help your son or daughter: Begin to understand individual learning styles, including their own Develop a writing process that uses proven techniques to write faster, more clearly, and with fewer struggles Integrate strategies and practices into content courses Begin to focus on the development of better daily habits Consider the challenges they will face in a college setting ABOUT THE DAY All summer program participants follow the same timetable: 7:30 a.m. 8:30 a.m. Common Breakfast 9:00 a.m. 10:15 a.m. Morning Class #1 10:30 a.m. 11:45 a.m. Morning Class #2 11:45 a.m. 1:15 p.m. Lunch/Free TIme 1:30 p.m. 2:45 p.m. Afternoon Class 3:30 p.m. 5:00 p.m. Activities 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. Dinner/Free Time 7:30 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Academic Prep (Supervised Study) 9:30 p.m. 11:00 p.m. Free Time PROGRAM ACADEMICS The curriculum is broken into three areas of coursework. Also included is an overview of his or her understanding of the complexities of living and learning within in a community of students. A wonderful opportunity for my daughter to meet a diverse group of students her age who share similar struggles. She made really good friends with whom she is still in touch. 4

CO-CURRICULAR AFTERNOON ACTIVITIES During their three-week stay on campus, students are asked to sign up for an afternoon activity that they will participate in three times per week. Past offerings have included: Artistic Self-Expression Basketball High School Program Newsletter Ceramics Dance Film Discussion Magic the Gathering Soccer Theater Tech Yoga Rock Climbing/Ropes Course Students also have the opportunity to leave campus to participate in well-planned group activities and to explore the local area. These activities and events are designed to support the goals of the program by increasing confidence, selfunderstanding, effective communication, and self-advocacy. RESIDENTIAL LIFE It is our intention to provide the students with a taste of college. At the same time, the High School Summer Program is very structured. We make sure that students feel safe and supported while they navigate the challenges of living and learning within a community of their peers. Students live in double-occupancy residence hall rooms. Halls are generously staffed by professional Resident Directors (RDs) and a host of college-aged mentors known as Resident Assistants (RAs). The residential life staff help students to bridge the gap between their classroom experiences and the rest of their day and evening. The RDs and RAs help students to engage in the community and ensure a secure and healthy overall experience within the program. Social Pragmatics Track Now in its third year, this track is designed for students who would benefit from a better understanding of the importance of language and behavior in social and academic settings. Students learn and practice techniques that allow them to better manage a variety of social environments encountered on a typical college campus. Participants in this track share many activities and classes with the traditional High School Summer Program, but also have programming aimed at their needs and interests. In particular, this residential track features a more intensive on-campus orientation, and a specially trained residential staff ready to support students through challenges like sensory integration and group participation. Students in this track are encouraged to understand the specific challenges they may face in a college setting and are introduced to strategies they can use to overcome those challenges. Upon completion of the program, students receive a personalized assessment of their strengths and challenges with regard to college readiness. If my son said it once, he said it a hundred times: finally, someone gets me! The social interaction available to our son was terrific for him. It gave him a glimpse of what college could be like. 5
