2 Dear Parents, Students, Employees, and Community Members, The school year is here and we are off and running! Students must learn new class schedules; parents must adapt to morning traffic patterns; teachers must develop even more challenging lesson plans; and administrators must put their best foot forward for strong leadership direction. We already achieve some great things in our schools. For example, we have Florida s Chemistry Teacher of the Year in our own backyard. Florida s top high school principal calls Marion County home. One local high school teacher captured top honors in a national science lab challenge. And our video production students continue leading the way in local, state, and national competitions. As well, consider these achievements: Our district ranks #5 in all of Florida for most dollars directed into the classroom (lowest administrative cost) Our Finance Department holds its 14th consecutive Certificate for Excellence in Government Reporting for finance operations. Our energy program saves over $21 million to date thanks to green efforts by our students and employees. Five of our high schools enjoy national rankings thanks to advanced academics and graduation rates. Class of 2014 graduates earned $15.9 million in college scholarships. Even with these great things happening, we still have work to do. Our vision of Developing Successful Citizens Every Student, Every Day drives every decision we make. We focus our efforts on what helps our students achieve dedicated teachers, strong academic programs, challenging after-school opportunities, and on-going help for those who need it most. As you experience this new school year, be involved as a student. Be involved as a parent. Be involved as a community member. At the end of the day, we all make up Marion County and we all make up Marion County Public Schools! Sincerely, George Tomyn, Superintendent Information accurate as of July This calendar is published, at a cost of 25 cents per copy, annually by the Public Relations Office of Marion County Public Schools, an equal opportunity school district. Special thanks to the Ocala Star-Banner for its photographic contributions.
