2 STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Computers are nearly everywhere in our society. We interact with technology in many aspects of our life including academics, work and even our social lives. Preparing students to become computer literate is essential. Becoming computer literate goes beyond knowing how to type a paper or send an . It means understanding the capabilities and limitations of our technological world, and enabling students to use the computer with its associated technology more efficiently, productively and ethically. This hands on, project-based course will help students understand and solve the challenges that our digital society faces. Students will learn the main function of the computer and how information is processed. Using computer technology ( , IM, blogs, podcasts, etc.) effectively in their academic, personal and future career will be explored. Learning how to navigate and search the web efficiently will ensure that student s time spent on research will be useful and productive. The course will address key issues that relate to technology and ethics, challenging students to develop their own ethical principles.
3 COURSE OBJECTIVES Students will be able to: 1. Identify specific ways to become a safe and productive computer user 2. Describe how the computer is used in today s careers including business, arts, education, legal system, sports, agriculture, sciences and medicine 3. Explain how computer process data into information 4. Analyze the computer hardware and determine which products satisfy present personal needs and compare to needs over the next 4 years. (i.e. college) 5. Explain how the trend going green has impacted the computer world 6. Identify and describe entertainment resources available for the computer 7. Identify strategies to manage online annoyances 8. Identify internet-based communication vehicles 9. Write a resume and letter of application. 10. Write a thank you letter. 11. Understand how formatting affects the effectiveness of the overall product. 12. Use Excel to organize data. 13. Explain the function of different chart types. 14. Identity current trends in technology 15. Determine the need for businesses to have a presence on social media site. 16. Identify the limitations of mobile technology. 17. Evaluate the risks of text and multi-media messages for teens. 18. Understand the technology behind cell phones. 19. Edit an image using graphic editing software 20. Evaluate the use of graphic imaging software in business.
