1 Training centres TRAINING CENTRES The expertise available in companies and research or clinical centres is shared through different academic and industrial training programs. The universities throughout the country offer standard educational programs that can last from a few days to several years, and provide certificates up to high-level university grades in nuclear physics and medicine. These universities have strong links with university hospitals and radiopharmacies providing the perfect working environment to learn. Besides, most of the academic research centres have open positions for doctoral education and post-doctoral research programs. Industries are more oriented towards very specific technical programs related to their equipment and can provide on-site training (IBA Academy). Several other entities are providing training programs covering other aspects of radioactivity in healthcare such as basic notions of GMP, nuclear safety, clinical trials, transport regulation and software usage learning (SCK CEN, EORTC). All of these training programs are oriented to different target groups, allowing the ability to cover the entire value chain present in Belgium.

2 IBA ACADEMY IBA Academy has its own dedicated centre in Louvain-La-Neuve/Belgium: more than 60 m² comprising the latest state-of-the-art cyclotron (Cyclone 18/9) equipped with two software versions; 18F-labelling synthesizer and HPLC purification modules (IBA Synthera platform); working benches for hands-on activities, class room for theoretical lessons. IBA Academy provides trainings at end-user sites and works in partnership with several customers around the world. GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) standard training courses: Customized trainings available on demand. GMP description, the advanced QA training program aims to help clients understand and comply with European GMP Rules and Guidance for the production of the PET radiopharmaceutical 18F-FDG. 3 and 5 days. Trainee s pre-requirement : QA Manager or Head of Operations, good command of English IBA Cyclotron start-up. 5 days. Daily operation of the cyclotron and basic maintenance Technical background. Trainee s pre-requirement : technical background & Good command of English. IBA cyclotron Radiofrequency: In-depth training course on the Radio Frequency system with hands-on and troubleshooting session. 7 days. Trainee s pre-requirement : technical background & Good command of English. Synthera : Operational training on the Synthera at the customer s site during or after the Synthera installation. 5 days. 3 HEPHS - ISIB DEPARTMENT Nuclear techniques have been taught at ISIB since Inclusion of medical field have been done since The multidiscplinary approach intends to increase the ability of insertion into the world of work. SCK CEN ACADEMY The Academy for Nuclear Science and Technology coordinates all education and training activities of the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre. It relies on more than 60 years of expertise and experience in the fields of nuclear science and technology, innovative research and the availability of large and unique nuclear facilities. The Academy is an important partner for nuclear education and training in Belgium as well as at international level. Master in Nuclear and Physics engineering Duration: 2 years (after 3 years of bachelor in industrial sciences) Location: Rue Royale, 150; 1000 Bruxelles Objectives: multidisciplinary studies related to nuclear and physics in engineering. Medical purposes achieve by means of lectures, pratical works and possibilities of internship (related to radiology, radiotherapy and nuclear medicine) in hospitals. Target audience: person with a bachelor degree in engineer sciences or equivalent The SCK CEN Academy for Nuclear Science and Technology is active in: Guidance of young researchers: places are available for PhD and post-doc positions, Bachelor and Master students can spend time in our laboratories to prepare their thesis. Available topics are listed on our website. Guided tours are offered in the facilities (research reactors, hot-cells, nuclear physical, chemical and biological laboratories). Organisation of courses: we contribute to academic programmes such as the BNEN and the Radiation Protection Expert course; customized training courses for professionals are organised in radiation protection, radiation biology, materials issues, emergency preparedness, and any topic SCK CEN is performing research on. Policy support in education and training related matters. Caring for critical intellectual capacities, organisation of reflexion groups etc. Our team of lecturers comprises engineers, physicists, biologists, physicians, philosophers, technicians, etc. who all are experts in their specific areas on the basis of their positions as researchers or technicians. Training courses are tailored to the needs of the customer in terms of content, level, duration, language, venue, etc. Lessons can be given at the technical domain of SCK CEN in Mol (with the advantage of visiting the technical facilities) or at the premises of the customer. 4 NUCLEAR MEDICINE & RADIOTHERAPY UCLouvain grants the specializations in Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Oncology after a 5-year training. Radiopharmacy is offered as a new option for (hospital) pharmacists. Our institution also provides several trainings in medical physics, depending on the candidate s previous diplomas and education. INSTITUT BORDET The department of radiation oncology is a training centre for radiation oncologists, radiation physicists and oncologists in the different fields of radiation oncology. It is directly related to the ULB. The Service of Nuclear Medicine, Unit of Lymphology, headed by Prof Dr Pierre Bourgeois, has an expertise in scintigraphic examinations of the lymphatic system as i.e. in the realisation and interpretation of the Sentinel Lymph Nodes technics, the investigations of the Edemas,... All training programs comply with both ministry regulations and academic training degrees. Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Oncology programs are accessible to MD degrees or equivalent. Nuclear Medicine: The training is based on 2 years of internship in general hospital services, including cardiology, gastro-enterology, pneumology, or neurology among others, followed by an introductory year in nuclear medicine. This third year includes a theoretical training in radioprotection, nuclear physics, detectors, radiobiology and radiochemistry. The last two years focus on clinical training and a research work in nuclear medicine concludes them. Radiation oncology: The 5-year training covers various aspects of clinical oncology, theoretical training in radiobiology and radioprotection, internship in oncology and technical training for the various radiation oncology modalities, including brachytherapy, external beam therapy, proton and neutron therapy. The training is evaluated by a national examination. Radiopharmacy: Accessible to pharmacists, the radiopharmacy training program consists of two years, the first one focusing on theory, while the second concentrates on practical aspects. Trainings for phycisits who want to specialize in medical physics are also available, in addition to the training in radioprotection, and an active and close collaboration with the Institut Paul Lambin allows the training of imaging technicians in nuclear medicine. Department of Radiation Oncology (DRO) The department allows physicians to be trained in radiation oncology. This requires a 5-year programme including internship, teaching courses at the faculty and at a national level. At the end of the programme, they may obtain the academic and professional title of radiation oncologists. The department of radiation physic may train physicists and engineers in the field of radiation physics with the possibility to perform their final work to obtain the title of radiophysicists. This is done in close collaboration with the faculty of the ULB. Technologists and nurses in training may spend also time within the unit to see the practical aspect of radiation oncology; The degree level at entry depends on the speciality from student to MD Service of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) - Unit of Lymphology The Service and Unit allows physicians, technologists and nurses to be trained in the investigations of the lymphatic system. These trainings are open to interested MD who are non specialist in Nuclear Medicine, such as vascular surgeons, plastic surgeons, angeiologits, phlebologists,... The training is organized as a one week program including: Review of the basis (anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the lymphatic system), basis of the lymphoscintigraphic exams, methodologies for each exams and/or for each indication, presentations of normal and abnormal exams with their interpretations in relation with the clinical data, discussions of the therapeutic and prognostic implications of these exams, presentation of other technical investigations of the lymphatic system with discussion of their advantages, drawbacks and limitations. Technologists and nurses in training may spend also time within the unit to see the practical aspects of these exams. It gathers more than 45 scientists and MD. Each year 7 MD and/or physicists are trained in the DRO while the SNM organizes at least one training each year. 6 UZ BRUSSEL, VUB UZ Brussel is a university hospital with an important teaching mission. The hospital is closely associated with the Medicine and Pharmacy Faculty of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Trianing and education possibilities: Medical Physics Radiation Oncology: Different training programs are offered, both long term and short term.
