1 EXETER AREA Services which specialise in support for those experiencing Domestic Violence These agencies have staff with specialist knowledge who have built up considerable expertise in dealing with all aspects of the problems faced by women experiencing domestic violence. In many cases a referral to one of these agencies will be the best way to help a woman reporting domestic violence. 15

2 SPECIALIST AGENCIES FOR WOMEN WHO EXPERIENCE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Women's Aid Outreach service Women s Aid Outreach services provide support to women affected by domestic violence and abuse across Devon. They provide a confidential helpline, face to face support, free counselling, support groups, risk assessment and safety planning, advocacy, Pattern changing programme and access to a safe house. Women s Aid will also support you at meetings with other agencies, such as solicitors and criminal justice agencies. Staff offer emotional support and can help access move on accommodation and benefits advice. Refuges also have specialised children's workers that support children living in the refuge. 3 IDVA (Independent Domestic Violence Advocate) workers: Employed by Women's Aid to work with women experiencing domestic violence or abuse and have been identified as high risk by an agency such as Social Services, The Police or Housing Department. The IDVA workers work closely with the women to devise and implement safety plans. They support women through the criminal justice system including advocating on their behalf. Police Domestic Violence Unit All of the Officers in this unit have been specifically trained to deal with victims of domestic abuse. You can contact these officers to discuss any concerns you have about reporting an incident and family and friends of victims can also contact the officers for advice and information on other useful services. The police take incidents of domestic abuse very seriously. 4 Local Victim Support helpline: National Victim Support helpline: SPECIALIST AGENCIES FOR MEN WHO EXPERIENCE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Statistics indicate that domestic violence is a predominantly male on female crime. However, this does not deny the very real problems faced by men experiencing domestic violence: the perceived stigma and sense of isolation may make it very difficult to report this crime or seek help. 5 Forced Marriage Unit Foreign and Commonwealth Office The Forced Marriage Unit gives advice and assistance to people who fear they are going to be forced into a marriage abroad, fear for a friend/relative who has been taken abroad and may be forced into a marriage, people who have been forced into a marriage and do not want to support their spouse s visa application. The project offers advocacy, one-to-one support, phone support and pattern changing courses for girls/young women who are witnessing domestic violence between adults or who have an abusive partner themselves. 7 The Hideout This is a domestic violence website designed especially for children and young people. The website informs you about domestic violence, helps to identify what is happening at home, and directs you towards additional support and information. There are interactive checklists, quizzes and games to help you think through problems that surround domestic violence. The website also ensures the site can be accessed safely with a Hide My Visit button, and contains a downloadable safety plan. Website: SPECIALIST SUPPORT FOR SURVIVORS FROM THE LGBT COMMUNITY Broken Rainbow Broken Rainbow is a UK-wide service offering support to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender victims and survivors of domestic violence and abuse. Phone: Website: talktofrank.com EMOTIONAL SUPPORT AND COUNSELLING Samaritans Samaritans is available 24 hours a day to provide confidential emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide. You can speak in total confidence with one of their volunteers, day or night. They will not judge you; will not tell you what to do; but will try to help you think things through. 13 Depression and Anxiety Support Service For people suffering anxiety and depression. Offers support groups and advice. Meets every Friday from 12-2pm at the Volunteer Bureau and on first Thursday of every month from pm Room 13, Exmouth Hospital Annex. Please note that relationship counselling is not advisable if you are in a violent relationship, as it can put you at further risk of power and control over you. Phone: Address: Verney House, 115 Sidwell Street, Referral: Self-referral Devon Sexual Abuse Line The helpline is open to respond to calls from men and women in Devon, over the age of 16, who have been sexually abused in any way and at any time. Fully trained volunteers take the calls and offer listening, support and information which may include signposting to other organisations. Phone: Website: OLDER PEOPLE Action on Elder Abuse Action on Elder Abuse runs the only national, freephone helpline for anyone concerned in any way about the abuse of older people. Unlike other helplines that are generic for older people the Elder Abuse response line is dedicated exclusively to this issue and is staffed by paid workers and volunteers who are trained and experienced in providing advice on abuse.
