4 SECTION 1 Glossary of Terms Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people Within NSW Health 1 the term 'Aboriginal' is generally used in preference to 'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander' in recognition that Aboriginal people are the original inhabitants of NSW. Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) Each university has an Indigenous Student Support Centre that can assist with applications to the Commonwealth funded Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS). This scheme provides Aboriginal students (undergraduate) with up to 2 hours a week tutorial assistance during semesters. While ITAS usually applies to undergraduate study and tutorial assistance is not automatically granted for all postgraduate students, a case can be made if postgraduate study is in a different area to their undergraduate qualifications. Prerequisite A subject/unit/course required to be undertaken before commencing a more advanced subject/unit/course. Study-time The amount of time recommended by a university/ institution as required each week or over the semester to complete a subject/course. Unit/Subject/Course Universities/institutions use these different terms to describe a particular area of study or a topic to be undertaken over an academic semester. 1 Communicating positively: A Guide to appropriate Aboriginal terminology, Sydney, NSW Ministry of Health, PAGE 2 NSW HEALTH Where to study my Master of Public Health

5 SECTION 2 Welcome to the Aboriginal Population Health Training Initiative! The Aboriginal Population Health Training Initiative is a new training program offered by NSW Health that commenced in The aim is to improve the health of Aboriginal people by strengthening the Aboriginal population health workforce in New South Wales (NSW). Over 3 years trainees will: undertake a series of work placements within the population health services of NSW and, at the same time, complete a Master of Public Health (MPH) by coursework studying part-time. This booklet will help trainees to choose the MPH degree that best suits their professional and personal needs. Why study for an MPH degree? The MPH is widely recognised as a degree that prepares people for a career in population health in areas such as infectious disease control, health promotion, policy formulation and management of health programs. An MPH provides graduates with the skills required to improve population health, through: planning and evaluation assessing determinants of health and illness developing and implementing effective and efficient approaches to health services and programs. The core subjects included in an MPH, such as epidemiology, biostatistics, health promotion, policy and communicable disease control, provide the knowledge base for these areas of practice. How do I use this booklet? The Aboriginal Population Health Training Initiative allows you to choose the university where you will study your MPH and this booklet has been designed to assist you, in consultation with your workplace supervisor, to make that choice. There are 22 universities and institutions across Australia that offer an MPH degree; this booklet profiles the 6 in NSW as trainees will live and workin NSW. Each profile presents information describing both the MPH degree and the student support services provided for Aboriginal students at the university/institution. This information has been complied with the assistance of the university/institution. Each profile is presented in a standardised format to allow you to make easier comparisons between MPH degrees. The profiles are slightly different to each other, reflecting the varied nature of the degrees offered; therefore profiles should only be used as a guide. A number of universities offer other master degrees that share many public health core subjects with the MPH. If you are interested in one of these degrees and can demonstrate how it will complement the aim of the Initiative, this can be explored by you, your workplace supervisor and the staff supporting the Initiative at the NSW Ministry of Health. Where to study? This decision about where to study will be made in consultation with your workplace and your family, however when choosing the university/institution factors to consider include: How do I like to learn through face-to-face tutorial discussions or online? Can I attend classes in another town and be away from family? What flexibility will I need in my study arrangements? Is there an aspect of public health I am particularly interested in? Do I want to study with other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students? Are my undergraduate qualifications recognised by all the universities and institutions listed? Does my employer need particular skills in its workforce? Once I have chosen an MPH program how do I choose subjects? Many MPH programs consist of a mixture of core or compulsory subjects (also called units/courses, see Glossary) and elective subjects. It is recommended that you complete Where to study my Master of Public Health NSW HEALTH PAGE 3

6 the core subjects of your degree first. This will ensure a good introduction to the field of population health, and allow your workplace supervisors to more readily identify work projects that are aligned with your learning. For each MPH program these core subjects are clearly identified. Some universities/institutions have a preferred order for the completion of core subjects however where there is choice your workplace supervisor will be able to help with both choosing subjects and planning ahead the order of these to maximise the alignment with and benefit from your work placements. Where to from here? Each profile provides the web address for the university/ institution s course outline webpage. From here you will be able to find out more about the MPH program and the subjects. Once you have narrowed your choice, make contact with the MPH Coordinator/s whose details are also provided in the profiles. The Coordinators are aware of the Initiative and will be able to provide further information about their program and discuss what is required to meet entry requirements. All the trainees participating in the Initiative must apply to enter an MPH program and the MPH Coordinators can advise you how to apply. Where else can I get assistance? The Public Health Training and Workforce Unit within the Evidence and Evaluation Branch at the NSW Ministry of Health will be working with your workplace to deliver the Aboriginal Population Health Training Initiative. We are available to support you and your workplace to select an MPH program that is a good fit for you. We can be contacted at: Manager Population Health Training and Workforce Ph (02) lmadd@doh.health.nsw.gov.au Senior Policy Officer Aboriginal Public Health Training Ph (02) aphti@doh.health.nsw.gov.au This is the third edition of the booklet. It has been made possible through the enthusiasm and assistance of many people at the universities/institutions profiled. The Indigenous Student Support Centres, at the universities, are a good source of information about the services and facilities you can access and can often assist with the enrolment process.
