3 Norwegian films on the move Norwegian films enter 2012 in a very privileged position with a record breaking 24,5% national market share in 2011, close to 40 new cinema releases and more than 2,8 million tickets sold. For the first time, the success was also reflected in international sales. No wonder we have high expectations for the upcoming year! Although there is a substantial reduction in new releases for 2012, the diversity in expressions and genre is great. The ambition of delivering documentaries on an international level has resulted in a particularly strong list in this area. The year opens with an international documentary, Back to the Square, about what happened after the Egyptian Revolution, directed by Petr Lom. Kari Anne Moe s Bravehearts, a documentary about what happened to four politically engaged youth after the terror of 22nd July in Oslo and Utøya and Hans Petter Moland s documentary When Bubbles Burst, about the globalized economy and present financial crisis should also have an international audience. The last few years, Norwegian genre films have made their mark internationally with Dead Snow, Cold Prey and The Troll Hunter leading the pack. This year the films go deeper into Norwegian mythology and history with tales of witch burnings, the Black Death, the Devil himself and other mythical creatures from the Norwegian wilderness. Expect the unexpected in Dunderland, directed by Finn-Erik Rognan and Nils J. Nesse, Veil of Twilight, directed by Paul Magnus Lundø, Escape by Cold Prey director Roar Uthaug and Thale, by Aleksander Nordaas. The Max Manus directors Joachim Roenning and Espen Sandberg will open the fall season with Kon-Tiki and the story about Thor Heyerdahl s well known expedition across the Pacific Ocean on the primitive Kon-Tiki raft. After receiving critical acclaim for her films Kissed by Winter and Upperdog, Sara Johnsen also returns with a strong Nordic cast in the dramatic All That Matters is Past. In 90 Minutes, Cold Lunch director, Eva Sørhaug, reflects upon what happens the last minutes before a person commits murder. With their strong track record with short films, both Hisham Zaman and Dag Johan Haugerud are directing there first full length features with 5152 Kilometers to Heaven and I Belong. And finally, before Christmas, children can look forward to the spectacular remake of the Norwegian classic The Journey to the Christmas Star, a fairytale directed by Nils Gaup. And wishing upon that star, we can look forward to 2013, with exciting titles like Victoria, Torun Lian s film based on the world famous novel by Knut Hamsun, two full length animated children s films and much, much more. In 90 Minutes we follow Johan who is making a lavish last meal for his wife, Fred who is on his weekly visit with the kids and Trond who completely has lost control of his use of violence towards his young wife who just gave birth to a child. Before the irretrievable act of murder happens, these men are still considered as human beings. 90 Minutes don t try to give any answers or to find psychological explanations, but simply to follow these men s perspective and stay with them and share the minutes just before it s too late. Eva Sørhaug (1971) holds a Bachelor s Degree in social sciences at the University of Oslo. She furthered her education at The San Francisco Academy of Art University, where she got her Master of Fine Arts degree in filmmaking in As part of completing her degree, she also attended the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts for one year. After completing her education, Sørhaug directed several short films before making her feature film debut with Cold Lunch in Sørhaug is also a skilled director of commercials, and is attached to the production company 4 ½. feature films 5

He is born in Kerkok but lives in Norway. With the film Bawke he achieved an unprecedented debut at the short film festival in 2005, winning over 50 international awards. Bawke won the decade s best short film in Norway. Zaman s film Winterland opened the Tromsø International Film Festival in Zaman is now completing production of two feature films, 5152 Kilometers to Heaven (his feature film debut), and A Letter to the King. 6 feature films

One day a Chinese baby girl is found floating down the river, and they realize that they are being haunted by William s brother. William and Janne run further into the woods, trying to escape their nemesis. Sara Johnsen (1970) studied literature, photography and media before beginning at the Norwegian Film School in Since then she has directed several short films. Johnsen also debuted as an author with He Knows Something She Should Try, followed by White Man in She made her feature film debut in 2005 with Kissed by Winter. The members of the Orheim family all have their hopes and dreams, but find it hard to cope with everyday life. Jarle finds his escape through music, political activism and chasing girls, but standing up for himself at home is a battle still to be fought. Years later, Jarle has to face the ghosts of his past and consider what his childhood was all about. Norwegian director and screenwriter Arild Andresen started out making short films and commercials. In 2006, he directed the youth drama miniseries Boys will be Boys, the first Norwegian production nominated for an EMMY. Andresen s debut feature, The Liverpool Goalie (2010), won both the Chrystal Bear and a special mention at the Berlinale Generation It received critical acclaim as well as a big audience nationally, and has won lots of international festival awards. Company Orheim is his second feature. Company Orheim is a family drama and coming of age story about guilt and atonement, and the cost of independence. 8 feature films

Roar Uthaug (1973) was educated at Mediefabrikken and The Norwegian Film School in Lillehammer. He was nominated for the Student Academy Awards (the Oscars for students) in 2003, with the short feature film The Martin Administration, his graduation film. After graduating, Roar was employed by Fantefilm as a director of commercials and music videos. The first full feature film he directed was Cold Prey, which premiered in Uthaug was a co-producer of Cold Prey II. His latest film is Magic Silver, which he directed in collaboration with Katharina Launing. feature films 9

He has worked as a journalist, and as dramatist for various dance and theatre companies. He has also published three novels. Petter Næss (1960) has worked as an actor, screenplay writer and instructor within the film and theatre world. He directed his first feature film in 1999, the humorous Absolute Hangover. His second film was Elling, which was seen by 800,000 people in Norway, and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Feature. In 2005, he directed Love Me Tomorrow, the last film about Elling. The journey caught the public imagination and Thor and his crew reported home via radio transmitters as they drifted across the biggest ocean on planet Earth. In a way, it was like the world s first reality show: Would they make it or die trying Joachim Roenning (1972) directs in tandem with his childhood friend, and film school alumnus, Espen Sandberg (1971). During their time at Stockholm Film School ( ) they founded their production company Roenberg. They made their debut as feature film directors with Bandidas in 2006 a western comedy starring Penélope Cruz and Salma Hayek, produced by Luc Besson and his EuropaCorp. In 2008 Roenning and Sandberg got to show their directorial skills with Max Manus. The movie turned out to be one of the greatest success stories of all time in Norwegian cinema. 12 feature films

The village is cursed. Once, a long time ago, the King s only daughter, Goldenhair, went into the forest to find the Christmas Star. She disappeared in the dark forest and never returned. The King subsequently cursed the Christmas Star, and darkness and sadness descended on his kingdom. One night an old wise man came to the castle. He told the King that if he could find the Christmas Star before ten years had passed, Goldenhair would return. Nine years have passed and this Christmas is the King s last chance to find the Christmas Star. Sonja manages to elude the thieves by escaping into the castle. She overhears the King s sad story just before she is discovered and captured. She begs for mercy as the evil Count tries to throw her into the dungeon. The King buys her free from the robbers and releases her. As thanks for his help, Sonja sets out to find the Christmas Star so the King can get his beloved daughter back. Nils Gaup got his breakthrough as a director with Pathfinder, which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in This success led to many Hollywood offers, and his next project was Shipwrecked, with Walt Disney as co-producer. The remake rights for Nils Gaup s film Head Above Water were sold to the USA, and the film was made with Harvey Keitel and Cameron Diaz in the leading roles. So far, Nils has directed more than 10 feature films. In addition, he has directed a number of TV-series and theatre performances both domestically and abroad. feature films 13

16 feature films DUNDERLAND DUNDERLAND In 1695, a young maiden is accused of witchcraft. Her persecutors end her life in the bottomless pits of Dunderland valley. In the years to follow, numerous horrendous events and tragedies strike the valley. In 2011, an ensamble of Norway s premier actors will put up a play at an old, abandoned boy scout camp. They are also the men behind 17 documentary films for TV2, and have produced commercials. Øystein Karlsen has worked with commercials, short films and music videos as well as radio and TV. He is educated as actor at Arts Educational School in London. He has written, directed and produced Dag and Dag 2, and Fox Television Studios has bought the rights for remake. 14 feature films

And the lonely upperclass boy, Anders, needs friends. He has had experience as a program producer for the NRK, and is known for having brought so-called trash-movies to Norway, before he made his feature film debut with 5 Lies in His short film Precious Moments (2002) won the Teddy Award at the Berlin Film Festival in Thomas Wangsmo (1980) is a film graduate from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. He has written and directed more than 20 short films. His short film Amor was nominated for Best Short at The European Film Awards in In addition to writing and directing, Wangsmo has edited all his films, and often also works as cinematographer and producer. In a way he could never imagine, life takes on a new direction while he is searching for a missing pair of siblings in the prostitution circles in Bergen. Varg realizes that life will never be the same when he has to make a decision: Let the criminals go free or expose Karin to mortal danger.
