2 The School Copenhagen Business School is one of the three largest business schools in Northern Europe. CBS has approximately: 14,000 full-time students, 1,000 exchange students (per year), 400 full-time researchers and 500 administrative employees. In addition, CBS is accredited by EQUIS and is a partner in PIMS and CEMS. Strategically, CBS primarily focuses on three target areas: Internationalization Partnership with the business community The Learning University o CBS seeks to provide a learning environment that focuses on learning and individualized skills development rather than teaching and mass education. CBS was established in 1917 by the Danish Society for the Advancement of Business Education (now known as FUHU), which is a private educational institution. In 1965 the business school became integrated as an institution of higher education in the Danish education system and today is regulated by the Danish Universities Act Facilities CBS has state of the art library services, computer facilities, cafes, restaurants, student organizations, and bookstores. There is also an inexpensive health club on campus. Two metro (subway) stops are conveniently located within a short walk of CBS main buildings. Buddy system arrangement You will be assigned a Danish student, or buddy, who will help you from the moment you arrive in Copenhagen. Under normal circumstances, your buddy will pick you up from the airport and help you get to your accommodation. Throughout the semester, to varying degrees, your buddy will coordinate social activities and help you with any questions that you may have. Credit system Most courses are worth 7.5 ECTS credits. To be considered a full-time student, it is necessary to take 4 courses to earn 30 ECTS credits per semester, which is

3 equivalent to 5 courses at Ryerson. Even though credits are transferable, they will not affect your GPA. Grading s cale As of September 1 st, 2007, a new grading s cale will be used in Denmark. Courses CBS has a complete list of undergraduate courses that are taught in English on its website. Language courses A Danish Crash Course is offered the week prior to the Introduction Week. It is a 20 hour intensive Danish language Course. There s a small fee of $140 for students from partner universities, which includes Ryerson. During each semester, Danish language courses are offered for credit. In general, it is overcast. Relative to Toronto, winter is normally mild while summer is, for the most part, pleasant. It rains a ll year round. They greatly appreciate equality as well as individuality. They tend to be reserved at first, but if you try to get to know them, they are very nice and friendly people. Cost of living Housing CBS arranges accommodation either in a room with a private landlord, in a house/flat, in a residence hall or in a shared flat for all students who applied before the application deadline. A particular kind of housing can not be guaranteed because demand for student housing in Copenhagen exceeds supply. Accommodation price range (In CAD) Fall Semester: $ $4364 Spring Semester: $ $5220 $475 - $1000 per month More accommodation information Personal expenses Relative to Canada, Denmark is slightly more expensive. Eating and drinking out is very expensive. E.g. A single alcoholic drink costs approximately $10. However, some discount stores carry cheap wine and beer. Also, eating at home can be very cheap. Regarding methods of payment, the only payment checks that will be accepted by banks are travelers checks. If you want to use a credit card, you must know your 4 digit PIN number; people do not sign their credit cards receipts. If you want to open a bank account there, Nordea bank would be a good choice because they are quite flexible with foreigners.

5 Estimated Personal Expenses Approximately $3000 per semester Books/Supplies Textbooks are priced similarly to textbooks in Canada. Estimate a cost of approximately $400 to $500 per semester. Transportation Public transportation (bus, train, and metro) will cost you approximately $240 to $360 per semester. A monthly pass is $60 and it s sold in the airport or in any train station. Unlike North America, biking is a very popular means of transportation. A used bike costs approximately $130-$230. Admission process To be admitted into the exchange program, you need to complete and send the following: Registration form (must be filled out in a computer, printed out, signed and then mailed or faxed) Resume, copy of passport (photo page), 2 passport sized photos (with your name on the back), course selection form and pre registration form, accommodation form, a copy of your most recent transcript, and (if applicable) the Danish Crash course form. Registra tion Forms More Information What Ryerson Student s had to say Very useful - it helped to orient better in school and the city, but more importantly it provided opportunity to meet with a lot of exchange students (on the orientation session upon arrival) During the semester I had to do only one presentation in one course. For the rest of my courses it is only 100% exams. What to bring Just bring the essentials, as you will need room in your suitcase(s) to bring home any purchases you make while abroad. Note that toiletry and makeup are usually more expensive in Denmark.

6 Exchange fair You will be asked to represent Ryerson during the exchange fair at CBS, so bring some brochures and pamphlets about Ryerson. Copenhagen is a great city for an international academic exchange. There s an international airport that s within minutes of the downtown core, which makes travelling very convenient. Also, the city is not overwhelmingly big, nor is it unexcitingly small. Danish culture also provides a perfect middle-ground it is different enough that you can experience significant cultural differences yet similar enough that you likely won t experience overwhelming culture shock.

7 As for the school, Copenhagen Business School is one of Ryerson s best partner institutions. CBS is partnered with many of the world s best business schools, such as Wharton (USA), Manchester Business School (UK), RSM Erasmus (Netherlands), SDA Bocconi (Italy), HEC Paris (France), and many others. However, in my opinion, the quality of teaching at CBS was disappointing, for the most part. Moreover, the course assessments often failed to reflect one s knowledge. At CBS, most courses have a 100% final assessment, many of which are 15-minute oral examinations. In such a short period of time, the examiners could only perform a surface-level examination. Nevertheless, outside of these two faults, CBS is an excellent institution. You ll be involved in a very international environment, have access to excellent facilities, and have many opportunities to work with some of the hundreds of CBS exchange students. All things considered, I would recommend CBS to any Ryerson student.
