Introduction to scanning the liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder and right-sided views of the heart Obtaining standard views Recognition of normal organ structures Recognition of cardiac anatomy measurement of size and function January 30/31 March 31/April 1 June 28/29 August 18/19 September 29/30 December 1/2 Soft Tissue: Intermediate Diagnostics (CE: 14 hours ) Learn pathology and differential diagnoses of common soft tissue diseases Refinement of abdominal scanning techniques through hands-on instruction Imaging of the more difficult organs (pancreas, adrenals, lymph nodes, etc.) as well as a review of the Big 5 Case studies and discussions February1/2 April 2/3 July 10/11 October 1/2 December 3/4 This course will cover Doppler imaging and it s applications for portosystemic shunt evaluation as well as imaging non-cardiac thoracic structures, ocular and cervical regions Case studies, discussions, and hands-on scanning March 6/7 October 3/4 Soft Tissue: Clinical Case Workshop (CE: 7 hours ) This course will include group presentations of small animal clinical cases Interpretation and discussion of initial history Physical exam and clinical findings will be followed by live scanning demos of each animal Case reviews including follow up diagnostic and therapeutic plans March 8 July 13 October 5 FAST: Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma, Triage & Treatment (in Veterinary Medicine) (CE: 7 hours ) Standardized extension of the physical exam for rapid diagnosis of life threatening abdominal and thoracic conditions Detection of free abdominal fluid, pleural and pericardial effusion, and free air Post-interventional, post-surgical, and critical care monitoring Clinical utility of Abdominal Fluid Scoring System, as a means to monitor anemia, hemorrhage, and worsening or resolution of abdominal effusion conditions April 23 August 20 Obtain a better understanding of disease processes pertaining to felines Increase skill level of hands-on scanning techniques for both the abdomen and heart Learn current therapies used for treatment of feline diseases September 10/11 Musculoskeletal & Cervical Ultrasound (CE: 7 hours ) Review relevant normal anatomy and scanning tips for superficial cervical and clinically-relevant musculoskeletal regions Discuss indications for musculoskeletal scanning for the diagnosis of shoulder injuries, brachial plexus tumors, iliopsoas muscle and calcaneal tendon injuries, etc. Discuss indications for cervical scanning, including diagnosis of parathyroid adenomas, thyroid disease, cervical abscess and mass lesions, and laryngeal dysfunction This course is for veterinarians and technicians who have completed the Basic and Intermediate Soft Tissue Ultrasound courses, or who have lesser ultrasound experience but want to enhance a particular clinical area in their practice (eg. work-up of lameness) are also welcome to attend July 12 November 22 Joyce Holt Director, Academy of Veterinary Imaging Growing up, I spent time in New Mexico and Texas, where I was surrounded by a menagerie of animals and spent most of my time riding horses. I attended Tarleton State University and graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Production. Following graduation, I worked for a wholesale grocery company as the manager of the IS Department. I decided to go back to college in This is where I was introduced to ultrasound and immediately fell in love with it. As fate would have it, I entered ultrasound school in 1997 and graduated in I worked as a registered Cardiac Sonographer for over a year, when I was approached by Sound-Eklin to be an Applications Specialist. I have been with Sound-Eklin for over thirteen years now, I am the Director of Education. My job is an adventure that encompasses my three biggest passions: animals, ultrasound and travel. I consider myself very fortunate to be a part of the Sound-Eklin team and to have the opportunity to build a very successful animal adoption program, and have saved hundreds of four-legged friends during the past seven years and look forward to another strong year. 5 Kim Radway, DVM, with Nigel Dr. Kim Radway graduated Suma Cum Laude from Colorado State University School of Veterinary Medicine. After completing her medicine, surgery and emergency medicine internship she practiced in these areas of expertise. In 2008, Dr. Radway began training in ultrasound at the Academy of Veterinary Imaging and completed every ultrasound course, and the DVM Imaging Program. Concurrent with this training, Kim continued to work full time in general practice, start a mobile ultrasound business, Rocky Mountain Veterinary Ultrasound, and work once a month for the highest volume mobile ultrasound practice in the country, New Jersey Mobile Associates. In July of 2011, Kim left general practice to pursue ultrasound full time and now serves multiple practices in Steamboat, Craig, Vail and Aspen, as well as, New Jersey. Kim enjoys spending time skiing, hiking and white water rafting with her husband and two daughters. She even finds time for their dogs, cat, guinea pig, hamster, horse and pony Schedule of Classes Clinical Approach to Small Animal Pathology (CE: 14 hours ) Honing your Sonographic Diagnostic Skills Blending the Medicine with the Sonogram Course Objectives: Part 1 (Lecture only) This course includes a 2 part lecture series regarding the clinical and sonographic presentations of all major organ systems in canine, feline, and ferret medicine. Part 1 takes the attendee from the moment the patient presents to the clinician, through the clinical workup, culminating with the sonographic presentation, followed by a brief summary of the clinical outcome. Recognize and integrate the sonographic pathology into the clinical workup Recognize the pathological tendencies Stimulate clinical objectivity Address sampling techniques, recommendations, and procedures Part 1: July 8/9 Part 2 (lecture and hands-on scanning) Takes the attendee from the moment the patient presents to the clinician, through the clinical workup, culminating with the sonographic presentation, followed by a brief summary of the clinical outcome. From course registration and correspondence, to the coordination and organization of lecture materials and staff, Whitney supports Academy customer service and course participant satisfaction. Whitney Woodward graduated from Texas Tech with a Bachelors of Science in human development and family studies. Staying close to Whitney s Texas roots, her husband, Victor Flamenco, and their 7 year daughter Shelby, stay busy with Taekwondo training and with adding Mandarin Chinese studies to Shelby s Spanish-English fluency. There is simply no substitute for the feedback available from experienced imagers. Veterinary Technician Imaging Program (CE: 35 hours per week. Not an accreditation program.) 10 Meet Academy Instructors June Boon, BA, MS, June was introduced to veterinary ultrasound in 1979 when she was looking for work at Colorado State University. She was given the opportunity to help a radiology resident develop scanning techniques in animals using a Bscan that had been donated to CSU by a human hospital. After about 6 months an m-mode machine was donated to CSU and she was asked to try obtaining m-mode images in animals. At the time there were only a handful of veterinary references in the literature, all very general or all m-mode only regarding the potential of diagnostic ultrasound. Eventually given the choice of developing either the abdominal or the cardiac ultrasound program, the choice was easy, the dynamic field of echocardiography won! Since 1980, she has continued to be challenged with new modalities and diagnostic information about two-dimensional imaging, spectral Doppler, color flow Doppler, tissue Doppler, etc. She developed normal reference ranges for the dog, the cat and llamas. She has helped hundreds of veterinarians learn the skill of echocardiography and its interpretation. Her Manual of Veterinary Echocardiography remains the only book dedicated completely to echocardiography and is an acclaimed resource used by both generalists and specialists. Echocardiography remains a passion of hers and she loves to teach others to learn and enjoy this diagnostic modality. Bob Burroughs, RDMS,, Applications Specialist Bob Burroughs graduated from the U.S. Army Academy of Health Sciences, San Antonio, Texas in 1978 as a radiologic technologist. Bob was cross-trained in ultrasound in 1980 and became a nationally-registered sonographer by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in Abdomen and OB/GYN sonography in Bob s early career ranged from staff ultrasound technologist to managerial roles in private practice administration and mobile sonography program development. In 1998 he graduated from Averett University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. In 1999 Bob became a veterinary sonography instructor and applications specialist with Sound Technologies (later Sound-Eklin ). In 2004 Bob went to work full-time in veterinary clinical imaging when he became the primary sonographer for the Veterinary Emergency Center in Richmond, Virginia. Bob is currently a lead sonographer for Sentara Healthcare in Southeastern Virginia and continues to enjoy being a part-time instructor in veterinary sonography for Sound-Eklin. Christine Reiman,DVM with Razzle, a domestic short-haired Tabby As a student of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis, Dr. Christine Reiman had a passion for ultrasound and radiology. She worked in the small animal radiology department during summer breaks and took small animal and equine ultrasound electives. After graduating in 2002, working at Sound-Eklin was a natural fit. Since 2003, Dr. Reiman has worked in various capacities within the company as an Ultrasound Applications Specialist, an, and in the technical support department. Following her residency at Texas A&M University, she achieved board certification by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and became a Diplomate of the ACVIM in the College of Cardiology. As a specialist she has worked in private specialty practice and as an associate professor at the University of Guelph, Ontario Veterinary College. A clinical cardiologist and lecturer, Dr. Drourr is owner of clinician and teacher first and recently co-authored a clinical cardiology manual, The ABCD s of small animal cardiology- a practical manual that is published by LifeLearn. Her research interests are focused on canine chronic valve disease, dilated cardiomyopathy, imaging, interventional procedures and clinical trials. Taeva has been with Sound-Eklin since 2000 and continues to teach veterinary ultrasound with Sound-Eklin Academy of Veterinary Imaging. Taeva is registered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Craig Sink, MA, RDCS, RVT, Applications Specialist Craig is a graduate of East Carolina University where he obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Sports Medicine/ Athletic Trainer. After graduation Craig was an assistant trainer at Georgia Tech and then the Head Athletic Trainer at North Carolina State University. In 1987, Craig changed careers and entered the world of diagnostic ultrasound. Craig is a registered Cardiac and Vascular sonographer. He has extensive scanning experience, not only in the realm of cardiac and vascular medicine, but also with abdominal and small parts scanning. He worked on the human side of medicine until 1999 when he came on board with Sound Technologies. After a three year break as an Applications Specialist with Toshiba, Craig is now back with Sound-Eklin as a Clinical Applications Specialist. Craig is an instructor for the courses and also performs system installs. Craig is an avid sailor and owns a 35 Pearson named Lemonade. Not only does Craig sail on the local waters of coastal North Carolina, but has extensive offshore experience with several trips to and from the Bahamas and Bermuda. Dr. Schmidt served as clinical instructor at Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. During his time there, Dr. Schmidt was a coordinator of the clinical oncology department, where he instructed senior students, interns, and residents in clinical medicine, provided didactic teaching to second and third year students and coordinated clinical research. Dr. Schmidt was involved in new/novel medical therapies for tumors of the canine urinary bladder and oral cavity. His other duties included serving as co-chair of the ICU procedures committee, and serving as coordinator for advanced imaging protocols (CT and MRI). Following his time at Purdue University, Dr. Schmidt moved into private practice at Florida Veterinary Specialists in Tampa, Florida. He later became a consultant at VCA Berwyn Animal Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, practiced internal medicine and oncology at VCA Veterinary Specialists of Northern Colorado, and was a telemedicine consultant with Sound-Eklin. Currently, Dr. Schmidt practices internal medicine and oncology at North Florida Veterinary Specialist in Jacksonville and is an ultrasound education instructor with Sound-Eklin. Dr. Schmidt s philosophy is to treat the entire patient rather than the disease, which led Dr. Schmidt to obtain a strong background in internal medicine as well as oncology. In addition, Dr. Schmidt is trained in endoscopy, diagnostic laparoscopy, and ultrasound. Dr. Schmidt develops treatment plans for animals that are not only based on current protocols, but based on a pet s overall medical health and needs. On a personal note, Dr. Schmidt enjoys fly fishing, mountain biking, and is trying to add surfing to his skill set, the latter taking some time to develop. Tom Sherrill DVM, BSEE, DABVP (Canine and Feline) Dr. Tom Sherrill graduated from the University of Florida in 1975 as an electrical engineer. He received his DVM degree at Mississippi State University in And in 1997 he was awarded Diplomat status to the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Canine/Feline). Dr. Sherril has been a small animal practitioner since He has owned and operated a multi doctor practice, and is currently a practicing emergency veterinarian in addition to his mobile ultrasound practice which services the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Michael R. Soltero, DVM Dr. Soltero is a partner in Saguaro Veterinary Group, Scottsdale, Arizona where he performs medical and surgical procedures from ultrasound to hemi-laminectomies. Dr. Soltero started veterinary school at CSU in 1997 but took a hiatus to pursue other careers including fitness director and insurance planning for high net worth individuals. In 2009 he graduated from Kansas State University with his DVM. Dr. Soltero enjoy s as a veterinary practicioner is the diversity to do orthopedic surgery one hour and ultrasound the next, both of which are his favorite aspects of being a doctor.
