It is the function of the veterinary surgeon to diagnose and treat injuries and lameness. As part of the vet s treatment plan he may call on the expertise of the farrier and it is essential that the farriery practitioner has an in-depth understanding of diagnostic techniques and is able to interpret diagnostic results, especially radiographs. The aim of this module is to: develop the student s understanding of the diagnostic tools and techniques available to diagnose injuries, disease and lameness evaluate the results of diagnostic imagery analyse results of lameness evaluations with reference to biomechanical function of the related anatomy relate diagnostic imagery to surface anatomy. CONTENT 1 Inter related veterinary / farriery procedure 1.1 Pre purchase examination of the performance horse 1.2 Clinical examination of the lame horse 1.3 Introduction to diagnostic imagery 1.4 Interpretation of diagnostic imagery for biomechanical dysfunction (abnormal load forces) 1.5 Introduction to diagnostic local anaesthesia of the fore and hind limb 2 Diagnostic tools and their use 2.1 Health and safety acts governing the use of diagnostic tools 2.2 The use of nerve blocks 2.3 The use of radiographs 2.4 The use of scintigraphy 2.5 The use of ultrasound 2.6 Palpation utilisation 2.7 Flexion tests 2.8 Gait analysis (kinetics and kinematics)

LEARNING OUTCOMES On successful completion of this module a student will be able to: 1. Discuss the principles and safe working practice of the radiographic process 2. Relate radiographic results to deep and surface anatomical structures with reference to all relevant radiographic views associated with diagnosis of injuries, congenital abnormalities and pathological diseases in the foot and limb 3. Evaluate the application of anaesthetics in the process of nerve blocks and the relationship to radiographs 4. Analyse and evaluate radiographic results with reference to biomechanical function and summarise appropriate farriery protocols for practical application. 5. Summarise the use of diagnostic tools available for injury, disease and lameness diagnostics.

3 ASSESSMENT METHODS The method of assessment for this module has been designed to test all the learning outcomes. Students must demonstrate successful achievement of these learning outcomes to pass the module. Number of Assessments Form of Assessment 1 Practical Analysis 1 Coursework 60% % weighting Size of Assessment/Duration/ Wordcount (indicative only) 40% Presentation on specific case work Reports Category of assessment Practical assessment Learning Outcomes being assessed 1, 2, 3 and 4 Coursework 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 PASS REQUIREMENTS The student must pass both components of the assessment strategy. In the event of a student being referred in either part of the assessment it will only be the outstanding part of the assessment that will be reassessed. The maximum mark that will be awarded for the reassessed component will be 40% and students will be awarded an aggregate mark for the module.

Further reading from a range of sources supplements core information and contributes towards the achievement of all module aims. Self-assessment activities facilitate formative assessment throughout the class and can offer instant feedback on learning. Regular synchronised online events using video conferencing software is used to simulate an authentic classroom experience to students in a distributed environment. Student interaction and debate is encouraged through a subject specific discussion board and individual support is available via and telephone. No of hours Practical monthly workshop sessions 3 hours per month (8 sessions) 24 Online - Online students also have 24 hour access to a wide range of online learning materials and learning activities and are expected to log-in to the virtual learning environment for at least 1.5 hours per week for a year long module to work through the module learning materials. Module tutor time equivalent to 3 hours per week for one semester is also allocated to support students. 45 TOTAL SCHEDULED LEARNING HOURS 69 GUIDED INDEPENDENT STUDY Development of independent learning - Students are advised to use this time to further develop themselves as independent learners. They will be required to develop a rigorous approach to further research and the acquisition of wider knowledge, concepts and ideas. Reflection, research and further study - Students should use this time to plan, critically evaluate and reflect on their learning, undertake further research through private study and engage in the library resources through wider direct and indirect reading. By developing these skills as independent learners it will allow for the further development of graduate skills and contribute towards future employability. Preparation for assessments Students should use this time to analyse, prioritise, plan and structure their assessment requirements. They will need to select issues for research, conduct efficient research searches, evaluate and interpret key information and critically analyse and proof their own assessments.
