2 2 Thank you for serving as a preceptor. Seven Suggested Questions Under your guidance, the administrator-in-training (AIT) is asked to write answers to at least seven questions about what he/she has learned about the dayto-day functioning of an assisted living/adult care facility. The questions are designed to help the AIT understand how assisted living / adult care homes function, while trying not to be intrusive about proprietary information about any specific facility. The first question focuses on how you make decisions as the facility s administrator. Please direct the AIT to the appropriate other staff members to answer the other six questions. Your Input into the Program Design The goal is for the AIT to gain some experience and knowledge about how facilities function. You know best what questions would better prepare your AIT to be an effective administrator, so rewrite or change any or all of these seven suggested questions to fit what you feel will provide the best learning experience for your AIT reflecting your facility s unique setting and program. Write a couple of additional questions if you wish.

3 3 Suggested Questions 1. Management Talk with the administrator. Discuss with your preceptor the management information system he/she uses to make decisions, (e.g. daily, incident, and accident reports, census reports, care planning and similar reports) and how your administrator monitors daily quality of services. Submit a written summary of the information sources your preceptor uses to make decisions. 2. Human Resources Talk with the human resources staff person. What steps are taken to keep employees satisfied at the facility, e.g. empowering employees, attractive pay scale, educational and promotion opportunities, longevity, and merit recognition? Submit your written answer. 3. Resident Care Talk with the Care Planner(s) How does care planning get accomplished at your preceptor s facility? How does the facility assure that each resident s care plan is successfully implemented? 4. Personal Services / Activities Talk with the person who directs activities. Study the activities calendar contents. List the types of programs included, e.g. how many individual, group, outside-the-facility activities are there? 5. Dietary Talk with dietary personnel. How is menu planning done? How are residents and their preferences included in the menu planning process? 6. Environment Talk with the person(s) in charge controlling infections in the facility. What steps does the facility take to control infections, e.g. hand washing, food preparation, garbage and waste management, pest control? 7. Housekeeping / Maintenance Talk with the head of housekeeping and the head of maintenance. How is the housekeeping schedule developed and monitored for keeping rooms and public areas in acceptable condition? Work orders. How does maintenance decide which work orders to do first?

6 6 How to Qualify as an NC Adult Care Home AIT Preceptor A simple process Send a letter together with a resume showing how you meet one of the following qualifications to Mr. Doug Barrick, Adult Care Licensure, 2708 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC and he will send you an official letter of approval. Be a currently certified adult care home administrator in NC Plus meet one of the following experience qualifications in a home of 21+ residents: Two years as administrator of record Be the administrator of record in an NC adult care home for 2 of the past 4 years Or (within the past 5 years) had One year as NC adult care home administrator of record plus two years in assisted living management at corporate or regional level or in a local facility as administrator or supervisor in charge Or For persons with a Degree in health care administration from an accredited college Or Two years as a licensed nursing home administrator of record Be administrator of record of an NC adult care home of 21+ beds for one year. Acceptable record requirement: shall not during the past two years have been administrator of an adult care home or nursing home that had its license revoked or suspended at any time or had a provisional license, a suspension of admissions or a Type A or B penalty imposed.
